The forces include the elite 1st Guards Tank Army, which has spent months in Belarus recovering from its previous defeats. The famous Russian tank unit suffered two major defeats during the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, despite its track record, Putin is deploying them back on the battlefield. The video says this army has been deployed to Luhansk, but that's the only oblast under full Russian control. It is likely that this unit will be used in yet another attempt to take Bakhmut, and the rest of Donetsk, a territory which Russia claims as its own. The important thing, however, is that Russia has one tank army ready for combat while Ukraine has still to form a new tank unit or reinforce the existing ones using Western models. Ukraine will have to use defensive tactics in order to stop the upcoming assault.

    • Sardonic Hunter
      Sardonic Hunter Month ago

@xOldPiGx I'm of the same opinion. Putin sees a window of opportunity between now and the moment Western tanks arrive and become operational. He will try to take as much land as possible, and Ukraine's first task, before the new models are used to liberate Crimea, is to defeat the Russian offensive with all means at its disposal. At the present moment, Ukraine's allies should be working round the clock to flood the country with anti tank weapons, just like they did the first time, with spectacular results.

    • xOldPiGx
      xOldPiGx Month ago

I don't think Ukraine wants western tanks specifically to repel this assault, but rather to be equipped to launch their own. Tanks are primarily offensive. The 1st is likely going to suffer a third defeat in the same manner as the first two. Then later, we can expect the Ukrainians to have their turn.

Russian tanks are fortunately second and third rate, otherwise Ukraine may have been conquered in 2 weeks to a month.
Ukraine stockpile was 1600 tanks, probably 800 working order. Saddam had 6000 tanks.
Russia on paper has 12000 tanks, but at best 3000-4000 working order. See Google images of rusted out tanks, missing pieces.
US stores tanks et al in the dry desert. US has 6500 tanks.

    • ty gik
      ty gik Month ago

@B21Raider Another problem is that Ukraine lacks tank operators. Ukraine received 100 T72s from our country. And they were from other countries, such as Poland
also hundreds of tanks. Before the war, Ukraine had 2,500 of its own tanks + at least another 1,000 that it received from the Eastern bloc of NATO. I assume that most of them are destroyed, including the crews. Otherwise, she wouldn't have asked for more Western tanks so much. For an effective Offensive, Ukraine needs 2,000 Western tanks

    • Steven Ellis
      Steven Ellis Month ago +1

Majority of Russians armour been in rust buckets no where near Ukraine. T90 T14 are so few, T14 has only been seen in Red Square probably 10 or 20, at best where shown in Kremlin parades.

    • B21Raider
      B21Raider Month ago +2

@ty gik US is building new tanks for Ukraine without cutting edge amour and few other things.
The US in a few months would be able to get 80% of those 6500 tanks in working order. They are free of rust and not missing pieces. No country comes remotely close to the US in military logistics.
Russia can never get even 50% of those 12000 tanks in working order due massive rust damage and missing parts (stolen).
Russia lost over 2000 tanks in Ukraine and has requested Belarus (100 tanks) and is making new tanks. Analyst estimates of around 3000 tanks for Russia looks pretty accurate.

    • ty gik
      ty gik Month ago

And therefore it will take one year to prepare 31 Abrams tanks for Ukraine. Don't be under the illusion that most of the 6,500 tanks need repair. I googled that approx. 1000 tanks are ready for immediate deployment

The Ukrainian military injured scores of civilians when it fired thousands of illegal mines across the city of Izium last year, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has stated. The mines, similar to those allegedly used by Ukraine against civilians in Donetsk, were found near schools and kindergartens.
The mines were fired into the city with rockets by Ukranian force while it was occupied by Russian forces between April and September of last year, the NGO said in a report published on Tuesday. Dispersed hundreds at a time, the Soviet-era PFM mines are distinctively butterfly- or petal-shaped devices and are designed to main rather than kill those unfortunate enough to step on them or pick them up.
The HRW team entered the city following Russia’s withdrawal in mid-September and found these Ukranian mines in nine locations, including a school, and kindergarten, and a hospital.
A spokesman for HRW says most of these attacks against civilians by the Ukranian military go unreported by Western mainstream media, as it does not suit the controlled Western narrative.

"Big Revenge" is typical of the media language the Kiev regime uses -- maybe because the Zelenskyy inner circle comprises media moguls like he is and elected Rada deputies kept their positions but not their executive powers. A few have left Ukraine but the Kiev propaganda will not admit that any more than it reports casualties and losses of donated weapons.
While the Kiev Basin driving of tanks by national service rookies supposedly ending exercises in Belarus was a military failure due to a wider plan being abandoned with the loss of Hostomel Antonov airfield a serious aim to occupy or damage Kiev City into submission was clearly absent.
The Ukrainian regular army's swift dash to western Kharkiv was successful in dispersing whatever the Russians were doing there and even Moscow will have learned from that. However, undue concentration on Kiev then a swing to Kharkiv was at the expense of Russia too easily establishing the so-called 'land bridge' and occupying Kherson city which it did not fortify and it was clear that southern Kherson was more important.
The forces mentioned here should be sufficient to settle pockets of regular and Lugansk allies of Kiev (a faction of the LPRA which split from the pro-Russian one) and a possible large attack by Kiev forces would hardly benefit from new western armor of MBT size given training time, arrival of Abrams as well as German L2 tanks and how long it would take to transport these to the far east of Ukraine. Russia would use its air assets, EW systems and heavy armor all the way from the Dnieper. While Challenger, Leclerc and a variety of Bradley weapons could be involved they are too small in number to make strategic sense. Add to that factions in parts of Kharkiv and Sumy oblasts favoring Russia and it becomes less likely that a clash will occur.
Instead, Russia will continue to go around such as Bakhmut and Kramatorsk/Lysichansk to secure the Donbas border and establish a buffer zone as the delayed winter sets in.
With Enerhodar nuclear station decommissioned, all fuel and waste removed and IAEA technicians present on rotation for months Russia will retain presence in Zaporozhzhia until talks resolve issues and port sharing as in pre-Minsk days is restored then I think with Crimea's position guaranteed there can be a steady pull out of K herson oblast as Russia does not want to maintain forces so far west.
It will need Black Sea passage for grain and fertilizer for several more years but its economic interests have for some years been in the huge markets of Asia and, with China and the sub-continent Africa and South America. A demographically and declining Europe is of little interest to Russia as long as it is not threatened by proximate weapons owned and directed by the USA.

Stop calling the 1st GTA "elite", they had the same garbage training as the rest of the Russian army. They were "politically reliable" in the USSR, prestigious (in Russia), and based near Moscow (the center of the universe to Russia). Sure, they got "better" equipment, the T-80 is the worst of the Russian tanks, overall, though. At least for the Russians. The big problem with the T-80U is the turbine-engine, which guzzles fuel. The Russians have serious problems with logistics overall, and fuel is hard to deliver (need tankers or lots of drums), and is a priority target for Ukraine, alongside with ammunition logistics.
This same "elite" unit was stopped by territorials (essentially armed-civilians), and a single Ukrainian tank brigade, operating only a hundred tanks, all of which were much older and less capable than the Russian tanks (which numbered between 500 and 700 or so at the invasion start). That's "elite"? Can't even call them Moscow's highest-prestige unit, after the ass-kicking they took in Kharkiv... not sure the current commander wants to be associated with them, but he's also shown he's as incompetent as the rest of the Russian command structure.
The only thing that the 1st GTA has done really well in the war in Ukraine, is donate military equipment to the Ukrainian army.

The sending of tanks American or German will not change the battlefield , Ukraine faces a bloodbath the severity of which only increase each time the Americans, AS AN ADMISSION OF FAILURE OF PROJECT UKRAINE, escalates the situation with more weaponry but it has changed the politics and that should worry the Germans far far more than the decision to send tanks .
A comment from a Dutchman when an opinion pole showed Finland's population against membership of Nato and most certainly if Finland did join against Nato weapons on Finlands soil.
    Mathieu Meulen
"A neutral Finland will be a secure Finland"
A neutral Ukraine would have avoided all of this carnage . But neutrality is not what the US is seeking and have been seeking since they change Nato's rules they need and now have with the "ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL POLICY" the ability to dictate then control all the actions of Nato . Where the US goes so must Nato and all US allies that have been roped into this policy here and in the Pacific and world wide . Few of the US wars-on-terror were Europe's wars . They were US wars .
ITS MOST IMPORTANT FUTURE WAR WITH CHINA IS CERTAINLY NOT A EUROPEAN WAR .
By pressurising and blackmailing Germany into sending tanks the US have changed this war Ukraine conflict to a "REGINE CHANGE " in Russia as a prelude to provoking China into war . No longer could they rely on just weakening Russia in The Ukraine because Russia was winning from day one so now they know they have to defeat Russia before they provoke China and they need Germany to be fully committed on both fronts which they were not until now maintaining some air of neurtrality and independence .
THAT HAS GONE GERMANY AND GERMANS ARE NOW FULL PARTNERS IN THE US POLICY
That is the sea change for the Germans . They will be taken by Nato not to a full scale war against Russia but when Stolltenberg as he promised moves Nato into the Pacific and Pacific Alliances Germany will have to follow Nato in as do the rest of the Nato . Those are the rules . They we're not when Nato was formed but now under the rules "ALL FOR ONEC AND ONE FOR ALL " Finland cannot remain neutral from the actions of the US not in the Ukraine ,not in the "Regime Change " war against Russia and not when the US provokes a war with China nor can any other ally of the US But remember the quote form Henry Kissinger
THE US DOES NOT HAVE ALLIES ONLY INTERESTS
    AND THIS MOREE THREATENING QUOTE
TO BE AN ENEMY OF THE US IS DANGEROUS BUT TO BE A FREIND IS FATAL
Be in no doubt war with China is the aim of the US Admiral Charles Richard has made no secret of this
“This Ukraine conflict that we’re in right now, is just the warm-up,” said US STRATCOM head Charles Richard at a naval conference earlier this month. “The BIG ONE against China is coming.
THE US HAS CHANGED THE UKRAINE CONFLICT TO THE ONE THEY NOW HAVE DESIRED ALL ALONG :- "REGIME CHANGE" IN RUSSIA AND HAVE THE GERMANS TRAPPED INTO THIS PROJECT
As Lyle Goldstein say Europe and all US allies are trapped into this US policy
Lyle Goldstein , visiting professor at Brown University says that in order to maintain its world economic dominant position
"THAT IS A US AIM AND INTEREST NOT A NATO OR EUROPEAN ONE"
the US supports Ukraine to wage a hybrid war against Russia
THE PURPOSE IS TO HIT RUSSIA CONTAIN EUROPE ,KIDNAP ALLIES AND THREATEN

Interesting the 1st Guard Tank Army was not even close in Kahrkiv when the Ukrainian counteroffensive started. Moreover they've covered the retreating Russian units. Next time do the homework. Anyway I'm eager to see that Leopards turrets can fly higher or further than Russian T-72's.
