    Hi Colin,
Awesome videos. Keep them up. Love the bunker too! Was thinking about building one myself. Just with the metal frame work. Did you put in a pump for any flood risk? I noticed your water table must be even lower than what the depth you dug. Mines quite high so assuming I would need a pump? Or is the membrane and the water proof concrete enough to keep the water out? Thanks!

I'd suggest adding an airlock door at the end of the bunker hallway and adding another vent to pump contaminated air out of the hallway as well as clean filtered air in you'd also likely wan't to add a chem. shower to wash any contaminated particles off of yourself after any trips to the surface as well as an NBC protective suit to go with your gas mask.

Depends; if he has council approval, and followed ordinance - it would increase the value - mainly because now they have another room and half that they can convert for any purpose.
If the build was not authorised however; definitely hurts the asking price; as the new owners will need to pay for council inspection, demolition and filling in a fairly large area that was once rock with a reinforced material - not to mention potential fines if it's not declared/demolished.

Anything built underground with only one egress is a death trap.
With that, any entrance should open/close in a way that makes it unlikely to be blocked. Hydraulic back up might not be a bad idea. Other considerations are reliable air supply/exhaust and flood mitigation.
Great to be able to shelter from crisis, but not if it gets you killed in the end.

It is very safe to have a generator in an enclosed space, probably as safe as running a car in a closed garage

  • Devin Romney
Devin Romney 7 years ago +10

Colin, I have a concern: wouldn't running that gas generator kill you? I live in the southern United States, and about 12 years ago we had an unusually cold winter. A lot of people died because they weren't used to how generators work and tried to run them in their houses and suffocated. Wouldn't want that to happen to you.

You make a good comment, it's the first thing I was thinking when Colin mentioned the generator by his bed. I am sure he'll hopefully get some exhaust ducting for his generator to feed into the vent-out ducting.

    • Devin Romney
Devin Romney 7 years ago +1

Even with the ventilation ducts, at the very least it would be unhealthy to run a gas generator in there. You have to consider that the generator is not only producing toxic gases, but is also eating up a large quantity of the oxygen in that room. Between the generator and the human(s) living there, do you truly believe those two little ventilation ducts are going to cut it without people experiencing nausea, headaches, or death?

It’s interesting how you tried to hide the entrance with a shed when you did all that work in clear view of your neighbors. Eh, I’m sure you won’t be inundated with people in your immediate vicinity looking for shelter if things go really south. Might want to store some extra grub just in case!

How do you prevent it from filling with ground water? And also, you should install an even secreter exit so you could escape if your sheds infested with feral ghouls.

It's waterproof and any leakage or condensation could easily be handled with even a manual bilge pump.

^ you're right. He might have to put some rubber edge cover to the entrance and not using it while it is flooding..

Imagine if the air system stopped working, you should have an alarm for that or something, even just for common use
