Yup back when they played actual dnd, before they realized they can make more money by turning into a shitty sit com then ask fans for a metric load of money for a show and then still got funded by Amazon (who owns twitch and have funded them since they became big) and now treat they're fans of years as mentally slow children.

I was at a bookstore recently. There were five teenagers all buying up D&D core books, dice, and battle maps. I asked them if they were regular players.
“No, but we LOVE Critical Role and Vox so we’re starting a gaming group.”
I was so impressed that they were into the game so I bought them a Starter Set.
Thanks for inspiring the next generation guys. 👍

Normally something like this would take away from the charm of the source. But these guys voice animated characters for a living. They've got a home-field advantage. Also, it's cool to see the opening line from each episode come full circle.

@BoredOperator They've voiced characters in a booth by themselves for their whole careers, so they all can easily maintain the same feelings that they could give in a group session. That's part of what my initial comment was about. They are professionals in the voice over business, so this new direction for their characters is technically more natural for them than doing it live at the table.

@YnOtNa77 dracip If you're planning on watching Campaign 1 spoiler free yeah, don't watch it. It's still a lot of hours of streams so it depends on how much you care about spoilers, though, most people watching this series already know what happens but it's still a different medium and experience I think. Also I don't know how many of the episodes is it, but the first (1,2,3?) are about the group before C1 started, so it could be a cool intro to C1-stream. Also, this is about a portion of C1 so you don't have to watch the entire campaign 1 to experience it spoiler free.

@ThornInTheEye I got a friend of mine hooked on Crit Role. It took her a little over a year to finish Campaign 1 and get caught up with Campaign 2 (around ep. 110, IIRC). Initially she listened to to the podcasts while commuting to and from work (and during her lunch breaks and at the gym, after she became hooked), and during the pandemic the VODs were a way to wind down from a workday spent in Zoom calls.

So, it's not as impossible as it would seem, really.

Ahh man .. the fact they embraced the light hearted and comic relief which was a huge factor for the success of Critical Role is great to see. They are not taking themselves or this project too serious. So dope, I think that is what might help push this over the edge. Especially with a series like Arcane recently that was very heavy, this seems to be a great counter to that.

@The_BoZoiD I just watched the pre-screenings for the first two episodes. They frontload the first 15 minutes with Family Guy tier stuff and then get to the actual story, it's pretty cool.

    • The_BoZoiD
      The_BoZoiD 3 days ago +3

@Vishaan Singh I really hope that's the case because honestly it's giving me odd vibes of traditional western adult animation that relies way too much on raunchy and offensive humor. The CR cast are my favorite storytellers and I'd hate to see their work boiled down into a Family Guy level show.

The joke is, (and you can find the clip here on Clip-Share). That Liam O’Brien and Sam Riegel (the male elf and gnome bard) played their first game with Matt Mercer as a birthday present for Liam and as a part of a podcast they ran. Liam was getting the present cause he loved DnD but hadn’t played in years, Sam was total Virgin. But it was (assumed to be) just a one shot, so on the podcast Sam said “I want to play the most useless character ever, help me out Liam” and He was like “… gnome bard.” (To be fair, in older editions this was a lot more useless) and that fucking bard was goddamn clutch many times over.

    • Isaiah Welch
      Isaiah Welch 12 days ago

      @Mikc92 : I'm hoping for that too.

It'll be interesting to see how 256 hours of content gets distilled into 2 seasons of episodes -- which, by the way, are they going to be 30 minutes or 60 minutes in length, given the platform is Amazon? Because I would think that making each episode an hour would be similar to how FUNimation did various anime on platforms hosted by Roku.

Amazon.. you have absolutely no idea how much of a fucking goldmine this is going to be. If I was them I would be thanking my lucky stars. This is going to show that a genre that seemed untouchable in pop culture (D&D) is now an entire field of possibilities when done correctly. There are soo many fantastic stories that could be brought to life through the universe of DnD, each of them completely unique to the last. I've been excited for this since I was able to donate and absolutely can not wait to see these beloved characters that i grew to absolutely adore, come to life.

@Ultra G33K oh no, the stories of Critical Role are definitely adult. That and considering all of the blood, gore, probably nudity at some point, and abuse in the story, it's safe to say that it's adult.

This as an intro to each character: keyleth being nervous and unsure about her skills, grog fighting and being a little loveably dumb, Percy being OVER THE TOP and traumatized, Pike trying to direct the party to something a little more good aligned, Vax being concerned about people starving, vex just winking at the camera, and scanlan singing while flipping off the camera- perfect characterization and introductions already!

@MrLumie That is a finish to a story in a way but I would argue not a good one. Having someone be a main character from the start then have them leave only to die off-screen serves no narrative purpose

    • MrLumie
      MrLumie 13 days ago

@Melvin Linderoth I mean, Matt pretty much finished up Tiberius' story, him officially leaving Vox Machina to pursue his own quest, and ultimately meeting his end by Vorugal.

    • Alissa
      Alissa 14 days ago +3

@K MacGregor Glad someone else noticed Keyleth being included for that joke is really off. I was really hyped for the show but this trailer has me worried we're sacrificing characterization for quips. It was mentioned multiple times in wrap-ups that Keyleth considered leaving VM because they weren't meshing with her alignment or her backstory to lead the Ashari. I feel like the VM Origins comics got the balance with her (and most of the characters frankly) perfectly. She tries to take a job, for free, just to find a missing child, which is way more in line with what Keyleth's character shakes out to be than anything I've seen in the animated clips.

    • Seth Williams

So obviously the way that they encounter the Briarwoods in this show is likely to be massively different (since it appears they don't know the council at the start of this show, instead of being honorary members) - but I hope that however it goes down, we still get to hear Percy scream "SYLAAAAS!!" while unloading Bad News into him.

    • Isaiah Welch
      Isaiah Welch 11 days ago

@H Hylobates : I wouldn't say that the Council didn't think or know that the Briarwoods, but rather that the knowledge of the Briarwoods' true nature was hidden via the charm spells/abilities the Briarwoods used.

    • H Hylobates
      H Hylobates 11 days ago

@Isaiah Welch Yes I know all that 😅 I have seen the show. OP said it looks like the way they meet the Briarwoods will be "massively different", and we might miss out on the SYLAS! bit, I was just pointing out that since they look to be fighting them at the castle, in their fancy dress after the feast, that looks to be about the same. I'm going to guess the *who the hell are you?* happens in the two prestream episodes, and by the time Briarwoods gets going theyre already established, and therefore invited to dinner in the first place. Remember the council didn't even think the Bwoods were evil.

    • Isaiah Welch
      Isaiah Welch 12 days ago

@H Hylobates : That first fight happened on-stream, in Emon. The whole reason for the Briarwoods showing up was under the false context of building a literal bridge from Tal'Dorei to Wildemount.

It just so happened that Vax went invisible, and got caught by the Briarwoods in their guest quarters -- at which point, VM went looking for him.

If the first Briarwoods fight happens in a castle courtyard, that is the Sovereign Tal'Dorei's castle in the Cloudtop District in Emon.

    • H Hylobates
      H Hylobates 13 days ago +1

Looks like they still battle them at the castle though. You can see when theyre all dressed fancy, Grog with this curtain sash: and then at 1:17 he is in the same "outfit" in the castle grounds getting hacked at by Sylas.

    • Isaiah Welch
Isaiah Welch 14 days ago +2

@Jeff Withheld for Safety : But that was not pre-stream, as when that happened, the stream had already began. It happened during the Briarwood Arc, the first time VM encountered the Briarwoods in Emon.

^^ What they said! Really, Scanlan is arguably the MVP of the entire campaign. The creative way Sam uses his spells saved the whole party on numerous occasions. He could easily fill the role of distraction, infiltrator, damage dealer, support, healer, defender- a bard of many talents.

    • AKL
      AKL 8 days ago +2

(In case you didn't know, or for others who see this:) Sam Riegel, who plays Scanlan the bard, used to spoof Top-40 songs every time he gave someone Inspiration. Often the rest of the cast would join in for a line or two as well - they can all sing quite well. For the show, to avoid copyright issues, they've composed all original songs... which might be a bummer except that Riegel is a freaking unnatural musical and comedic genius. Even the very worst, cringiest ditties that he's made up to promote sponsors are way catchier than they have any right to be.

You might enjoy the BTS video "The Legend of the Music of the Legend of Vox Machina," on the Critical Role channel. (Part of a series on the making of the show.)

@Count Black man, I think what everyone is saying is that your comment was unnecessary, the critter community are here to celebrate this phenomenal goal. I get it, seeing the same comment on and off is annoying, but you don't have to voice your annoyance. Most, if not all of us here are here because we are excited for this, because to us. It is a big deal, you understand don't you?

So, I’ve always wanted to get into critical role, but the 4 hour episodes were just so long for me that I never watched the episodes Just clips of their characters from campaign 2 and the one shots. But this makes excited also the music in this trailer rocks.
