    1. The protagonists "unleash the greatest evil."
    2. There is an owlbear.
    3. There is a mimic disguised as a treasure chest.
    4. The Bard is being mocked for being useless.
This movie is certainly made by true experienced D&D geeks.

They missed the chaotic neutral thief character who on a whim decides to backstab the rest of the party members in the middle of the night when they are sleeping and run off with as much of their loot as he can carry while laughing maniacally like the joker. Yes, that really happened years ago in a D&D group I was part of and the other players were mad and threatened to walk out. Playing evil alignment characters had been outlawed by the DM in the past(due to a similar incident) but a jerk of a player found a way around that by playing a chaotic neutral character who was secretly psychotic. So after that incident, the DM banned players being chaotic neutral alignment as well. Luckily, the DM handled it well by just kicking out the chaotic neutral guy(because he was too disruptive and causing too much anger)out of the game and having the other players re-roll their characters.

Movie for AD&D geeks. AD&D is not D&D. From D&D Players Manual (BASIC SET, Mentzer revised rules): 'The AD&D game system is different from the D&D system .. It is also a fantasy role playing game, but is harder and more detailed. .. Remember you are not playing the more complex AD&D games with these rules. You are playing the original DUNGEONS & DRAGONS game!' Bards do not feature in D&D. Experienced D&D geeks know difference between AD&D & original actual D&D.

@Albtraum I mean, normally no, but dex-based, lightly-armored, dual-weilding Oathbreaker Paladins are a thing and make excellent theives, provided they have a background that grants thieve's tools proficiency. Aura of Hate + improved divine smite + the fact they can smite on all attacks, including offhand ones + the fighting initiate feat to poach the two-weapon fighting style from fighter makes Oathbreaker Paladin the class that can squeeze the absolute most out of their offhand attack from dual weilding. Its one of the very few ways to make a dual-weilder actually not terrible in 5e!

@Jaden D. agreed! We are not in the 80s anymore. During the last 6 years, I have played with plenty of women (Im a woman myself), asians, scandinavians, germans, white americans and british people and they were straight people, non-binary people - all kinds of identities - in the ages of 13 to 52. DnD players come from all walks of life these days and more women are joining, although there are still more men than women :) I believe your theory that women makes up a third of players.

    • TinySpyro

@Sky Chieftain The world is not called "dungeons and dragons". That is the name of the game itself.
So a movie with that name should - in my opinion - reflect the gaming experience, not just one of the many many DnD worlds.
And I think this movie perfectly reflects a friendly, fun campaign.

    • TinySpyro
      TinySpyro 3 months ago

@Sky Chieftain I completely disagree! DnD is supposed to be FUN :D
Of course, as a player, you will sometimes stop laughing and roleplay seriously - out of respect for the story - but if you cant have goofball moments and spontaneous moments, why even play?
Its a social, fun event, not a history school paper.

They should do a post-credit scene where the cast from the original D&D movie is siting around a table playing D&D, with Jeremy Irons as the DM, and someone says "this story was a lot better than the first one we did". Would be hilarious!

    • Just Me
      Just Me 3 months ago

@cheesy87 look, mate, in all honesty I will try to explain myself one more time, because I am tired of doing so and have a legion of zombies throwing my points to the wind just to suck corporate dick over a mediocre trailler. The movie is not even out yet and there is already a cult of hyped followers. But I don't want to be rude to you, since you do make good points.
The problem is, I am not saying D&D is a rigid, scripted game, with a serious route always. What I am saying is: there is ALWAYS consequences. Or should be, to keep the players playing. You can joke, you can mock each other, you can work together or backstab each other. There is always options. But that don't mean a party of level 4 can go fight a lich level 20, have no plan, spend the night prior drinking and then go and beat the linch and get all the gold and legendary loot. Don't matter how hard is the fight, it breaks the notion of danger.
That is my problem with this trailler. Is not the jokes, the characterizations or the high number of eye candy cameos. Is the lack of consequences. The characters are dealing with a complex world, dangerous enemies: black magic, green dragons, flesh eating slimes and so on. And what is the reaction? "Oh look, funny man go flying" or "punch it in the face and let's laught at it". Where is the fear, the dread, the terror and serious consequences of dealing with an evil, cruel, inteligent green dragon? Or destroying the whole world with black magic and killing thousands? "Oh look, all those dead bodies, the children, women and fathers that tryed to run away or fight for their lives, so sad... Oh, well, anyone wanna play drunk strip poker?"
It destroy the world building. That is my problem. Something that is the soul of D&D, the whole world around the game. And here we just see three people going from point A to point B, laughing, drinking and pissing each other. They could easily take all the cameos away and change the name of the trailler: Jumandi II, "insert adventure game here" adaptation and so on, would have the same energy.
And that is my problem. Yes, is just a trailler, a small look on the whole movie, hard to judge it for. But it is worrying that they chose to represent a lore diverse franchise like D&D with a comedic, marvel copyed "mock everything" kind of appeal. But like I said in another reply, only good move is to wait for the movie release.

    • cheesy87
      cheesy87 3 months ago

@Just Me mate, I am a Forever GM for several systems. I put an insane amount of work into session prep, coming up with monsters, very detailed world building, and interesting plots and mysteries. And my stuff is as dark as a nice cup of coffee, and so are the monsters and the encounters. But it is more than normal that your players make stupid decisions, there are lots of jokes, and most of the PCs are very eccentric which just lands itself to comedy. And often comedy happens in dark moments. Because, newsflash, it's a game you play with your friends to have fun. The content is still dark and I get lots of compliments about how moody and dark the scenes are that I come up with.
You can have a great story with stupid jokes and eccentric characters, that doesn't mean that the story can't be dark, the stakes can't be high, and the characters can't be good. But DnD isn't Shadow of the Deamon Lord and doesn't have to be - it's fun high fantasy

    • Just Me
      Just Me 3 months ago

@cheesy87 oh, yes, my bad. The ideia of caring about your characters, conquested equipment, level adquired and so on is an alien concept.
Everyone knows D&D is a casual game where all monsters are family friendly and there is no such thing as strategy or consequences.
No, no, just go Leroy Jenkins and watch as all your friends don't get mad because you can't be half assed to think your actions, actually care about the lore, stay in character and so on. Because we all know DM's don't put much tought behind players actions and there is no such thing as world building.
No, D&D don't need such effort. Is like playing monopoly, only without the rules. There is no consequences and the campaign is just there to provide NPC' targets, no immersion at all.
We all know it takes less than 5 min to start, win and finish a D&D campaign. No brainer.

This is giving me so many Ragnarok vibes...But honestly...I don't know if this is just a D&D thing or if it's new to fantasy as a genre (cuz I've never played D&D), but I've been loving the small amount of modernization in fantasy lately. Like Vox Machina with their "Resting B*tch Face" joke and this movie with goofy humor and awesome music. I feel like people are realizing that fantasy is just that: Fantasy. You don't have to make it stuffy and strict and slow...it should be epic and fun and hilarious!
In a book I'm writing there's a witch that can make herself look younger to entice unsuspecting men, so one of my characters calls her a catfish. Something about that slightly jarring humor in a fantasy setting is hilarious imo😂
