It's not just about 3DS tbh, it's about the whole Nintendo DS family that reached end of life. And that is truely depressing because there are no other real alternatives now it's all about hybrid consoles too big to fit in a pocket like a DS...

  • Nott Joey
Nott Joey 5 months ago +3155

The thing about the 3DS and Wii U is that Nintendo literally can't tell the difference between a pirated game and legit game if you play online. It's fully safe to play online with pirated games and the bans came from people playing games online before they released which was only possible via piracy, so Nintendo knew who to ban.

    • luke
      luke 5 months ago +173

does not really matter if you get banned at this point as the playerbase is dead for most games and you cannot buy anything on the eshop so theres no loss at this point if you get banned. The gts in the pokemon got ruined by hackers so theres no point in that either.

    • Nott Joey
Nott Joey 5 months ago +255

@luke you can still very easily find matches in games like Mario Kart 7 and Smash Bros and Pokémon so that's not at all true. That's very misleading to people. In any case you won't get banned for something as simple as playing a pirated game online. I even played games exclusive to other regions online back in the day and nothing happened lol. Nintendo doesn't care to issue 3DS bans anymore it seems, so people are safe.

It’s also worth mentioning that with the little green app not only can you download games, but you can also download pre existing themes that were officially made by Nintendo. Any themes you could download from the 3DS theme shop can be downloaded through the green app. The only drawback is that theyre installed to your custom 3DS theme app and not shown in the official 3DS theme library. But what makes up for it is that any region locked official themes can be downloaded to your current version of your 3DS. As in themes you could only obtain on European & Asian 3DS’S can be obtained on American 3DS’S and vice versa.

I bought an old 3DS (it was cheaper) a while ago to mod because of the really great library. Finally! I’m so tired of all these vids of people buying every 3DS game possible before eshop closes. Not only it’s precisely what Nintendo wants you to do but also a waste of money. They’re willingly preventing you from getting these games legally (it’s not like they’re getting money from second-hand catridge sales either) so in my book there’s no harm in just doing this now. Plus modding allows for a lot of other cool stuff, like modding your games or playing fantranslations of never localized games.

    • It's Over 9000 Productions
      It's Over 9000 Productions 5 months ago +51

People buying all those games actually makes sense for video game preservation purposes. Having one place document the games, their sizes, prices and donating all of it to a preservation service legally prevents Nintendo from trying anything funny. Anyone remember Emuparadise?

The green app is a necessity, if you forgot to update a game, or you buy a new game cart, or for basically any reason have a not-fully-updated game, you may be stuck on that version officially. Thankfully, our friendly green app includes the latest updates for basically every game (as far as I can tell). I would consider this the most unambiguously good feature, since it's just free updates anyways and it applies to basically every game.

After I got everything working I realized theme's didn't work because of the sd card being over 128gb, which is the apparent preferred size. Also anything over 128 makes loading up the 3ds a lot slower

  • Sjoberghd
    Sjoberghd 5 months ago +11

Honestly, the only issue with a Japanese 3ds is that region swapping locks you out of the eshop (at least with the "new" models, the original 3ds doesn't have as much of an issue I don't think), which might not sound important as it's shut down, but you lose access to certain apps like Pokebank so you can't transfer over your old Pokémon to Nintendo's servers. Considering Dexit and all that, you may not even care all that much, but it's just something to be aware of because unless you have a second, same region and model, 3ds which you can do some funky transfer stuff to get access to the eshop region you want, you lose access to certain features.

    • cus
      cus 4 months ago

what all do you lose out on with being locked from the eshop now that it’s closed? i never had a 3DS so i can’t get pokémon bank now and mostly just want to play pokémon games.
are there any major things i’ll lose access to if i go the japanese model route? like can i still use the GTS in the 3DS pokémon games and update my games or system if needed?

    • Sjoberghd
      Sjoberghd 4 months ago +1

@cus don’t know if you can update games still or not as I use hShop. From what I can tell, anything that does not directly connect to the e shop works fine, like system updates, online play, etc. but if you have to directly connect to the e shop, like with poke bank, you will get an error.

I recently got my hands on another 3DS, specifically a New 3DS XL. Great little console. Earlier this year when Loopy released his new capture boards, I snapped one of those up and now I've sent off my 3DS. Can't wait to get it back and mod it. Sadly the capture card that is getting installed does not include the USB-C charging mod that the newer revision has an option for, but being able to record on a New 3DS XL is gonna be great.

if you dont know what game to get, im planning to play kid icarus and bravely default! can't believe nintendo didn't at least port kid icarus to the switch. this is literally the only way i can play it now

For anyone reading this, it should be noted that a lot of the 3DS modding community actually recommends a 128 GB microSD card, rather than 256 GB.
This is because the 3DS scans the entire card when loading content and on boot, and this can increase load times -- making 128 GB the sweet spot of storage space vs. load times.

This video was so helpful! I recently modded my 3DS a week ago since the eshop closed and I couldn't find that one game I picked up my 3DS again for anywhere, not even online. It was the best decision I've ever made and I've been playing on my 3DS nonstop for the past week as if its 2013 😂
But I've been searching for some kind of guide on modding, not one that shows me how to do it but just whats out there. There is so much cfw for the 3DS that I didn't know how to use what I had or what my 3DS was even capable of. Now that I've found this video I'm even more excited to use my 3DS!

2:06 - I learned to homebrew in a single day and changed to a larger card not thinking that I'd need the extra space. It was actually pretty easy to simply copy over files from one card to another on a computer. Had to find a workaround to formatting to a FAT32 64gb cluster size on the new card though. Keeping my old card as a backup I guess. Tried to boot the console without my SD card to test it out and I didn't know what to do from the homebrew menu lol.

I recommend either a 32gb sd or 128gb, as size increases loading games gets slower so 128gb is still fast and big enough to hold all your games.

I honestly find it upsetting that they moved to the Nintendo switch and abandoned what they are known for. Modding it seems like such a good idea but im so scared I wish i had guts to do stuff like this to my 3ds. Im scared of corrupting files and ruining a specific thing :(

I'm actually glad I modded my New 2DS XL when I did. It was tedious and took me well over 2 hours because I kept rereading the online guide, But in the end, it was unbelievably Worth it to the point I play it regularly again. AND I am playing games I never got to Pick up to begin with.

A few years ago I bought a new 3ds(Not XL, the normal size only came to the us as a black Friday thing, if I'm right.) I quickly modded it, and have had fun playing around with games I never would've grabbed myself. But I've also found out you can use the new 3ds to make amiibo! I didn't have a phone that could do NFC chips, but there's a homebrew app for that.

I modded my 3DS XL the day after the eShop shutdown, and it's been great. Already converted some games for it, including Mother 3 with the ENG patch, and SMA4 with the e-Reader levels - I already owned the actual game (SMA4), but since the e-Reader never came to Europe, I didn't have the experience of playing any of the content it added.

  • sleepyppl

id recommend the new 2ds over the new 3ds for anyone who doesnt care about the 3d slider, its a lot easier to remove the sd card as you dont need to completely remove the bottom shell to remove the sd card and all you really lose is the 3d slider, which isnt even that impactful to 99.99% of games

I can't wait to (hypothetically😂) put this video to use, because my sis and I were gifted one when they came out, but we could never really afford to buy games. What fortunate timing this video founds its way into my recommendations after I tried my old 3DS on a whim. I thought it was broken, but I charged it for 15 minutes and it sprang right back to life.

It's not usually recommended to go above 128GB for your sd cards.
I have one in mine, and themes just wouldn't work right. it would always revert back to the default white. No custom themes worked, and even official ones only worked after opening and closing some form of software. I'm not sure if there's a way to fix this, but I've heard of this as a pretty common issue. I formatted the card as a 128GB partition, and it works perfectly again.
Let's be honest, you're not going to fill up all that space any time soon anyway.

    • SM3DW Plessie
      SM3DW Plessie 4 months ago +1

Pretty sure that issue only happens when you fiddle with the settings while reformatting, I kept it at the default format settings and it worked fine.

What I tend to do is use R4 Pro Gold 2023 for my DS games and the homebrew stuff for emulation and 3DS games. I also use a theme that has the folders built in - its a Dark Souls one! It's nice as you can just throw the now useless native programs that the vanilla 3DS packs into it. Easy way to clean up your home screen.
Why do I use a card? Simple: no real hacks for the pre 3DS DS games if I want to just mess around. It also keeps that card slot filled. It gives me options as well. Very useful

You most likely won’t get banned now that the eshop is closed. Also players have gotten banned by nintendo because they noticed the players were playing games before release which means it was pirated. That’s why they got banned. Nintendo actually doesn’t notice the difference between a pirated game and a real game when online. (If game has already been released)

I have been thinking of modding both my 3DS and my PSVita lately (maybe even my PSP, but I’m not sure what for, because you can play PSP games in the Vita, and maybe the WII U, if I feel it is worth it), although I ain’t sure if there’s any chance of legal action by either Nintendo or local authorities in case downloads from H Shop or other places can be traced back to me.
    3 Questions:
-> If I use a VPN in my PC when downloading stuff (homebrew, for example), and never play online (only local multiplayer) in the 3DS and in the Vita, is there any risk?
-> Is the Vita already dead? Since the Shop is still open, I’m not too sure if it’s still the time to mod it, as legal repercussions might be more likely (?).
-> The guy in the video (can’t remember his name rn, sorry) seemed to hint that there’s more to loose if modding the 3DS is postponed much longer. Why exactly? Even hacking the 3DS can be impossible in the future?

I'd go for a 128gb SD Card instead. Only because not only is even at that size the loading becomes pretty atrocious, but also because at least from what I've heard (grain of salt I guess) Anything above 128gb can make a 3DS greatly unstable. Seems like this dude seems fine for the most part so idk, just what I've heard for a while

I modded my 2ds a while back its the cheapest option if you want to play a lot of different games. Its imo better to get a large sd card then aim for a expensive device, unless yr used to the large xl screen or the 3d function. And some prefer a certain button layout.
