This was an awesome and much needed talk with Ben Simmons. It is nice to have him able to speak his side of the story, clear up some total bs that got mixed in with whatever else happened. He seems like such a refreshing nice person. Someone who deserves a fresh start. That said, I think he will be great on the Nets, it is the best team he could have landed on. And as for him being a baby, your coach and team, team mates, they should all have your back, not that they didn't. Buy some of Docs comments were out of pocket. One of my favorite interviews ever, and I've been watching the NBA since 1991. I'm surprised by how wrong I was about Ben as a person.
Really glad he did this with JJ, and it's kind of nice to know I can still be wrong about people every now and then. And it also serves as a reminder to not always believe what you're seeing on TV.
I've been in similar positions as Ben has in the past, so it's great to hear that he's doing better. Seems like a good young man. Sorry for pegging you wrong, and good luck during your rookie season.

I think it’s great we finally hear some of what Ben was going through and his thoughts. He’s a great player and we want him to do well. However also, I think JJ and the podcast coddled him a bit through the interview and there was a lack of real accountability. BOTH sides Philly org and Ben were wrong in some ways. Still seems that Ben is deflecting the real issues instead of saying “look I did x y z this was wrong , I can do this better by etc” I didn’t really get that. You can tell he’s still thin skinned. This is in no way discounting mental health issues because that’s real!

This interview is so good and I totally understand what Ben Simmons have been through. A lot of us experienced this kind of path but I can't imagine the difficulty to find the peace you need when it is public. No blame to Shaq and others who criticized him, like he said this is just ignorance and also a lack of empathy. But you have to know what it is personally to understand the difficulty and the complexity of that. I can't not wait to see one of my favorite player on the floor again and so happy to hear the wiseness he bring to the table here.

  • Memphis
    Memphis 3 days ago

I’m appreciative JJ was able to do this interview, I also understand you must strike a balance between being a respectful Interviewer and asking the tough questions or pressing an issue. With that said, it was a solid interview, however JJ still allowed Ben to get away with answering questions by putting the blame on anything else and not take responsibility for his own actions in the situation. My opinion hasn’t changed on him, he lacks the ability to take accountability for what he does or does not do. Durning the interview Ben was able to pen point key actions the Sixers took that he felt was wrong, Spoke about Doc making him Practice during Practice (Let’s not forget he didn’t go back cause he thought it was the right thing to do, he went back for that 8 mil), talked Doc and Jojo saying they didn’t support him after the game with the Hawks, no they supported him and also held him accountable, they did not disrespect Ben in any way, then he talked about no one was gone to get on a plane to see him until last minute 😳, Ben grow up, might have been last min but they were still willing to come out to speak with you, they also have family and friends. Now when it came to himself, came to his faults and errors and time to be a man and be responsible, all he had to say was “I did something’s wrong on my end” he owned up to nothing. I understand the mental health issues and having nothing negative to say around that issue. Ben Simmons needs to grow up, drop the child like mentality and be a Man.

@daddy12 bro clearly the only ppl in the world that have a problem with Ben Simmons are 76er fans clearly!! Why else would anyone hate on a grown man getting paid 10s of millions of dollars to work, not just work, play BASKETBALL AT THAT. All he did was refuse to practice and not take any criticism and continue to whine, what’s wrong with that man?? Have some dignity and some respect…I bet you’re a 76er fan!!!

@Uole GullookI have mental health issues as well. I spoke with my workplace to work things out but eventually the General Manager demonstrated he didn't understand.
I can fully relate to most of what Ben said, and how he handled things. You don't have the power, nor the right, to end this story. There is a good bit off difference between mental health sufferers, and because it doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean it isn't true or completely understandable too someone else.
I, like most people with an opinion on Ben, actually have no idea if it's true. Many still think confidently he has major character flaws, rather than understanding that their opinions aren't fact and we can all be wrong.

@Brodie Stephens In that essay of yours, you totally missed the fact that those statements were mild as, he wasn't blamed for the loss. Ben is just ultra soft mentally. I guarantee you, this kind of thing will happen again with him.

    • Brodie Stephens
Brodie Stephens 5 days ago +5

@AK 74 Doc and Joel DID throw him under the bus though. That was really petty, and really uncalled for. Like the guys discussed throughout this episode, if you work in any other job, and your boss and your colleague blame the whole team's overall failure on one small thing you did wrong.... you would change jobs. That's not a good workplace environment. You would leave. If you don't have support from your boss and your workmates in what is a whole team effort, you wouldn't put up with being blamed for the whole organisation's failure to produce. If it was McDonald's instead of an NBA team, and the store had a bad day of sales, you can't blame one fries cook for getting one order out late. There's a bigger systemic issue that caused sales to be down that day. It doesn't take a genius to know that.
It wasn't Ben's fault that the WHOLE TEAM lost to Atlanta. It shouldn't have come down to one play. If everyone did their jobs properly (Ben included of course), they would have been up by 15 points when Simmons passed the ball to Matisse. The Sixers didn't lose that game because Simmons passed one time when he should have shot. They lost because the Sixers (team) scored less points in 48 minutes than the Hawks (team) scored in 48 minutes. It's quite simple.

    • AK 74

@hardsequencer94 He blames everyone else for how they react to his performances. Like he shouldn't be criticized. Barkley and Shaq should 'protect players', Doc and Embiid 'threw him under the bus'. He thinks that he shouldn't get criticized publicly

@Brodie Stephens OK 1 year off then, the one in Brooklyn doesn't count, BUT in Philadelphia he didn't play not because of injury, because he just acted primadonna and decided not to play anymore, he quit on his team and he quit on the game of basketball. That's why I mention Wiggins, because he really love playing the game (he even took the vaccine he was against off), because he put his team first, he put the love of the game first, and he put playing elite defense first, just like he showed in the playoffs and finals, by defending the best player of the other team.

    • Brodie Stephens

@calo2006 I don't know how many spinal surgeries you've had, but I've had four. It's not possible to resume working immediately following spinal surgery. Like Simmons, I've had to learn to walk again on more than one occasion. Simmons didn't "take two years off".
He literally broke his foot the first time he was unable to play. The second time, he had spinal surgery. I'd love to see how good you are at basketball immediately after having spinal surgery. Did you actually listen to anything Ben and JJ said???

Thanks for this podcast. It's so difficult to get chances to hear what a person got to say, when the media just tends to get the "stuff" they want out of you instead of listening to you for real.
As the man has said himself, Ben Simmons definitely didn't handle the situation well back then, but JJ makes me able to understand more about what's ACTUALLY happening to him back then.
Majority of the media these days look for punchlines, views, attention and we start to get blind to what's happening behind the scenes. Crazy thing is we are getting used to this and personally I have to constantly remind myself what I hear might not be even 10% of the true picture.
Keep up the good work JJ, really appreciate what you have been doing and I am sure lots of others feel the same way.

This is a great interview, but this sounds literally like Ben being Ben. As a sixers fan and someone who's been emotional attached for decades:
Sounds like JJ was going soft, which I understand cause the politics. But seriously as a sixers fan, this sounds like the same Ben. Don't believe this bs. Ben is and forever will be an amazing player who underachieved and brings too much drama for what he's worth. Period. People need to stop enabling him and coddling him like JJ did in this interview. We all know he's good. But that doesn't matter everyone in the NBA is good. He's gotta be better. Period.
