lua sucks for writing software from scratch but it's pretty easy and accessible so it's good for making other things scriptable/extensible, like nvim plugins or roblox mods
@BrianDMS I think it is really great for those user extensibility needs. I wish some of my often-used software changed to / supported lua for configuration, plugins and the like.
My first ever programming language was actually Lua but I gave up because I didn't know how, little did I know it was easier now that I'm learning how to work with SQL
Oh man... VBScript. Some boomer teacher made us learn it 2 years ago despite the language being deprecated for some time. He also happened to like Perl... fun times looking for answers and everyone tells you to do it in PowerShell.
@Nixs hereโs some advice that worked for me. Get a sheet showing variable types that you can look back at. Also keep track of problems you encounter and how you solved them/ what you tried if you buy a c++ book, make sure itโs up to date and looks like it could help you. Some books are for experienced programmers learning to become experts and others are for beginners learning to become experienced. Also make frequent to semi-frequent comments in your code so you donโt spend to long re-finding the purpose of certain functions or for/if/while loops Most importantly; donโt be afraid to look into other languages if c++ is too complicated. Sometimes comparing certain aspects and features of python to c++ can get you a long way.
Your videos are the proof that you are a true programming expert๐๐. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us and helping us improve our skills.๐
Java's syntax is the best for beginners cuz its 1) complicated so other languages will feel easier 2) itll scream at your face with a 40000 character long error if you make a mistake
Oh man my first language was a little js i used to make websites alongside HTML and CSS. And we're talking a while ago now, i used to get the tutorials by taking floppy disks to the library and downloading web pages from a site. But the first language i tried to make games in was Lua, first in minecraft for programming turtles and then using the Lรถve engine. This was pre-roblox being a big thing.
It's crazy how similair it is to my journey I started out on Roblox when I was around 13-14 I then learned C++, Java, and JavaScript in highschool, and now I'm learning Python and Bash in college, and my next goal is to start a business in the future ๐
Lua was also my first programming language. Used to play around on an iPad app called โCodeaโ. I used to just change numbers and stuff in the example games and see what changed. After I learnt more, I remember being fascinated that I could use parameters in my own functions (before I did everything with global vars). It also helped me so much understanding geometry and math later in school. Note this was when I was about 8 years old.
Lua is my next language to learn. A few weeks ago, I happen to see Luajit page and I got interested. I can call win api functions. So just tried somethinng fun and planned to start a serious hobby project in Luajit.
For me I started with scratch (I know how bad it was, I was like 7), then I did html, css and lua at the same time, then I continued lua and started js, then I started python and angular.js, then vue.js, then c and bash (I am guilty of never actually finishing a language and just moving on, yay undiagnosed adhd)
They can learn if they wanted to, it's way more efficient to learn on your own without college, it's a question of motivation. So if they don't care about programming they'll never learn, people have different interests
My first was Skript for minecraft if that counts, then I started lua for roblox (still do lots of that), then eventually learning Python then c# for unity
started with lua to create roblox games aswell, then after realising how uncommon lua is i moved onto javascript which is what i've almost always used besides maybe using a few other languages for specific things (c++, java and a couple others)
I wish I liked it when I was younger I might have as much experience as you by now. I'm glad I didn't go to uni to do it tho as I learn quite easily on the internet
@Hubert Lao Yeah, I actually really loved AS3.0. I built my first Android app in AS3 and Adobe AIR. I had so many Oriely books and Linda Courses.. Good Times...
Who else knows the torture of lua table index being one learning a new lang and the index being 0. So confusinggggg since I also learnt it as my first lang
I started with ruat after watching a video by hank green like 5 years ago, needless to say I don't recommend starting there, but I learned alot and it worked out in the end.
I believe mIRC used lua as well... but at the time I got to chat bots, I'd already been doing JS and PHP for quite a while... By now I've been through so many languages that I don't care what the client/boss asks for. My own desktop is Linux, mostly because if there's an issue I can solve it myself if Google and ChatGPT fails. My true love, however, has become bare metal C on uC... full control of a resource limited environment. Oh, and perl if I'm handling raw text instead of binary. My pet peevee regarding untyped languages is to ask what's the binary invert of 1 in your language of choice... in C i can do a simple binary operation to figure out if one bit is set... in a language like python that takes ages, because technically python int is infinite and signed... .. yes, I have spent too much time in a server room, talking to database servers. ๐ข
First experience was coding for Roblox. Im too old and also I can't feel respect for such an easier learning experience. My first language was BASIC followed by web development, VB6 and Delphi. Most of my learning was books.
my first programming language was lua with roblox (i was 10 y/o) then i learned a bit of python but didn't do much then i learned c using arduino when i was 12 and then got deep in python now i'm programming microcontrollers using micropython but i'm trying c# and gonna start javascript also i made a bunch of discord bots (i'm 13 btw)

lua and python are the best (I uses to be an advanced roblox dev)
I'd love to hear more ๐

the "learning by figuring out what to build and then building it on the way" technique works so well for me
I got no answer since i only want money
itโs really the only way tbh otherwise thereโs no motive to even learn it to begin with at least for me
leaves a bunch of holes in your knowledge tho
same
My first ever programming language was actually Lua but I gave up because I didn't know how, little did I know it was easier now that I'm learning how to work with SQL
My first programming language was TI-Basic, you know, the one on your calculator from high school. This was followed shortly by Python.
Lua gotta be the best programing language for beginners
Some random person in the crowd
My first language was assembly ๐
My first programming language was VBScript when I was 13, I remember making a text based naruto rpg entirely out of pop ups๐
same as well, for VBA, but i wanted to make my powerpoint games โinteractiveโ.
Oh man... VBScript. Some boomer teacher made us learn it 2 years ago despite the language being deprecated for some time. He also happened to like Perl... fun times looking for answers and everyone tells you to do it in PowerShell.
Javascript was first for me. College was shit at teaching it tho.
My first programming language was c I learnt it when I was 12 it was really hard during that time
I started with bash, didnโt fully finish it, then python, and gave up and then decided to learn c++
True chad moment
Am learning my first launguage and I choosed c++ bc you can create computer programs with it

I'm 32 and just starting it. I'm fucking toast ๐ข
Super helpful, thank you! Iโd be curious to know more about your medical app, as I too have been thinking of building stuff for medical purposes.
My first was going to be PHP, but ended up being Java. Still love it to this day
Your videos are the proof that you are a true programming expert๐๐. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us and helping us improve our skills.๐
I do recommend learning by creating projects you find interesting! (That's what I am doing)
My man looks like he is 40 and is some Programming Language Evangelist
Java's syntax is the best for beginners cuz its 1) complicated so other languages will feel easier 2) itll scream at your face with a 40000 character long error if you make a mistake
and c++ will throw short messages but its more cryptic than a vault (im learning it as a kid(win32) )
My first programming language was Turing.
Nice to hear you start with lua! I am 14 and I program on lua and make actual money off roblox
My first programming language is C++ ๐ญ I hate my life.
My first language was Lua too, but I was making stuff for Minecraft with OpenComputers mod
Glad to hear you started from WordPress, cuz I'm in the same boart too!
Oh man my first language was a little js i used to make websites alongside HTML and CSS. And we're talking a while ago now, i used to get the tutorials by taking floppy disks to the library and downloading web pages from a site.
