Homemade Off Road Electric Wheelchair - She had NO Idea!

  • Published on Oct 16, 2018 veröffentlicht
  • Do you want one of these?!: notawheelchair.com/
Watch how we built this Off Road Wheelchair contraption HERE: clip-share.net/video/V6kJOXr3HzA/video.html Building this Off Road Wheel chair out of two electric bikes was a super fun challenge, and ended up being much easier than I anticipated. With a few minor adjustments to the electric bikes, I was able to mount a seat 'chariot style' right between the two e-bike frames.
See our updated version HERE: clip-share.net/video/vuMg0QwKAGI/video.html
We need help choosing a name for this electric off road wheelchair! Let me know in the comments.
Ill post all the build details and dimensions in the construction video tomorrow. This off road wheel chair goes 20 miles per hour, and should have a range of 20-30 miles. It cost me about $3,000usd (mostly the price of the bikes). About 50 dollars worth of metal for the seat, and about 3 full days to design and assemble the whole wheelchair.
Splicing two electric bikes together to build a powerful off road wheel chair was super fun, and a sweet surprise for Cambry.

I’m sure someone already said this but, call it a Cambry. I’ve been in a wheelchair for 8 1/2 years and I used to ride a motorcycle before my injury. This looks so like it would give me that same feeling of freedom.

Watching this in Aug. 2022 after seeing you two try the new wheelchair that goes up stairs. She has an engagement ring on on that video. You can totally see the way she was looking at you here. But it's also evident that you two have such an awesome chemistry right from the beginning. There's practically no change in the way you two just get along so well today and 3 years ago. This is definitely a life-long connection. You two rock!!!

Omg! This has me in tears! I can tell you must have fallen in love with this girl immediately and it definitely shows! She is so lucky to have such a wonderful husband. I just watched your wedding ring video where you use titanium from her first wheelchair, and she said when she first started dating she thought her wheelchair would detert people from dating her and she never thought someone would use her chair to make a wedding ring... that seriously touched me! The fact you keep going out of your way to create things for her so she isn't bound by a chair and instead can go out and enjoy so many things we all take for granted is truly inspiring. I hope you two have a long wonderful life together and congratulations on the pregnancy as well!!🙏🏽😊

The first time I am seeing this, and I want you two to know that I love you both. You're both beautiful and very special. I was suffering in pain a while ago from neuropathty in my feet, and I experienced a rare but paintful episode that felt like a sword being shoved back and forth through the bottom of my foot. But, watching this video helped redirect and focus away from the pain so I could get through it. So, thank you. I wish you all the joy and happiness this world has to offer and love for a lifetime and beyond.

I'm 62, suffered a broken back in 2004 and lost 50% of the nerve function below my lungs. Not great, but not bad considering they told me for a week I'd never walk again. Getting back half was such a blessing. Wheelchairs don't look like much fun and I've stayed away from them.
Thanks for the video, big tires and shocks a must.

You'd have to go up the china side. Nepal won't issue permits to people who cant walk or are missing an arm/s.
I can't decide if that is a good thing or not. Most of the danger in climbing Mount Everest right now is because it is so crowded.
There is only so much room on the mountain and there are like 3 weeks a year it can be climbed. Look up pictures for: crowds on Everest. Then image a storm blows in. If there were six people on the mountain, you could scramble for safety. Not happening when the line to the summit is longer than the line to the ladies restroom at a football game. (Either football, you choose)

Suggestions: 1) turn the brake 180° it won't put strain on her thumb.2) will be cool if she could latch her wheelchair straight to the bike rather than having a separate seat. So probably have two or 4 latch points wr the wheelchair latch securely

Hi Jerry, nice to see something more comfortable as a wheelchair. It's nice to know lovely lady can go around more and have fun in your invention. You could manufacture these and sell your ideas to different companies. Please make something comfortable like this for elderly people so that they can go anywhere and everywhere. especially who have restricted mobility. Thanks very much.

Cool wheel chair I like the fact that it was made out of an electric bicycle
One thing that is missing is the head lamps.
So that won't be difficult to install later in the future

That looks so awesome I'd love to have something like that, my manual chair sucks living in rural Mississippi, and one of the wheels fell off of my power chair. The power chair was a gift so it don't have any kind of warranty on it and I can't afford to get it fixed. I was looking up electric scooter attachments for manual wheelchairs and I came across the video on how to make this "bike" and after seeing the videos I want one.

I am a mechanical engineer, and I so badly want to design and build one of these but then a thousand times more user friendly, so every disabled person can have this feeling of freedom.
Not saying you did a bad job, you did great, and it's really good to see her enjoying it.
Ooh btw, I worked at a company that used to rebuild vans and cars to disabled people's needs. I am sure she would enjoy one of those, and not having to assemble the wheelchair like she has to now.

  • Bill Miller
    Bill Miller 4 months ago

Wow. you could make this almost a kit where the seat is attached to the normal seat posts and then replace the handlebars. The only thing that wouldn't be a stock part would be the throttle to control 2 motors! if you used a soft tail bike then you'd get the softer ride. Attaching to the normal seat post locations might give even more stability going up/down hills

This is so cool. What a great project and an amazing gift. Just imagine if it was front-wheel powered and the back of it actually *was* the wheelchair and the front just clicked into place. Don't even know if that would be possible, but it would make it even more accessible and give even more independence. Detach the front and go into a shop. This here is imagination fuel. :)

LOVE IT! 👏👏👏👏👏🙌🙌🙌I’ve been in nursing for thirty years, and have witnessed how limiting traditional wheelchairs are. I have always wanted to invent a chair that would be solar-powered with a hood that retracts and raises to protect the person going outside. Many obstacles people with mobility issues face are easily getting into and out of cars or other seats (like toilets, beds, etc.) without the help of someone else. Stairs, grass, sand, water, obviously, all off limits to someone in a traditional wheelchair. So incredibly excited for the ingenuity showcased on this show! Hope everyone eventually has access to these wonderful tools to make life more liveable. 🥰

I'm a wheelchair user with a background in mountain biking. Pretty nice, but she needs to be able to transfer into it herself. You can definitely use dual suspension bike frames instead of hard tail. The plate that is used for the seat needs to be angled backwards for more security. And Hydrolic disk brakes would be awesome. Also, you don't really need to use huge tires like that. 2.1 inch with 26" double wall rims would work just as good and it'll weigh less.
I doubt you'll ever read this, but who knows?! Maybe you'll even make me one of these:) Cheers from Canada

    • GS1

@Kurt Homan Dude still gets an A+ for putting this together. Most able bodied folks don't know about the importance of being able to transfer by yourself, pressure sores, or the exorbitant cost of anything "handicap" usable. Cambry reminds me of my wife, who was permanently paralyzed 30 years ago, 3 months before our wedding date.

In the newer versions maybe try and get the seat to rotate so Cambry could get out even easier. Also maybe try to figure out on how to inflate and deflate the tires with a press of a button.
