Romantic undertones aside, this song is actually more heartbreaking than it lets on.
Up until this point in the film, Troy was the only person who Gabriella could *truly* confide in. Her other friends were just there. Troy was the first person Gabriella could fully trust, her first true confidant. Then Taylor shattered her spirit by showing Troy desperately trying to save face to his friends by dismissing Gabriella as an afterthought (I know Troy didn't really mean this, but he desperately wanted to save face). To have the one person you fully trust in this school shatter your spirit like this must have hurt Gabriella a lot. She thought she could finally confide in someone, only for that belief to be turned on its head.
Nathan Labrador not to mention she never had real friends at her old schools. Troy was her first friend as well as confident and she fell for him.

I think that's the point of Gabriela and Troy's relationship. Yeah, they've only known each other for two weeks but they never felt like they needed to be anything else in front of each other. That's why Gabriela feels hurt here, she thinks Troy was lying that whole time. I've known people for months and I still don't feel comfortable being myself 100%. Tory and Gabriela were 100% from the get go though and I think that's something pretty special.

I hate all the auto tune in all of high school musical songs even as a kid it was obvious and annoying.
This is a great song and I'm so sad that throughout the trilogy Sharpay didn't get a song like this, they could've rly given her character more depth and she was a true star. No shade on Gabriella or Vanessa Hudgens, she did a fantastic job but I feel like a heart wrenching song for Sharpay's character was well deserved and Ashley Tisdale would've done a great job as well.

Even more than 15 years after the original High School Musical came out, this song brings back so many memories from the good days
I am just now coming here after 13 years to find that this song is my selffulfilling prophecy. This is the song I've been playing on repeat on my earphones the day my mom died. I didn't know why I choose to listen to this song. Or why did it make me feel better, safer. Now after 13 years, after a hard work on myself and identifying my traumas and repressed emotions I realised my mom didn't really love me in a healthy way, but in narcissistic way. As I kid I felt something was wrong, I just didn't know how to put it together. And it broke me. I never learned a healthy way of loving someone. I didn't even really love her before she died. I became a narcissist myself. And the realisation of that personality trait made me work on my self. Now I can see the reality as it is. Now I need to start understanding myself to understand her. In order to forgive myself, to forgive her. So I came back here led by some inner feeling that kept playing this song in my head. And now I see that this song is much deeper then it sounds like. I see why I chose this song when I was faced with the reality of losing my narcissist. That feeling I had, that I didn't know how to put together. It was the feeling of being used by a narcissist instead of being loved by my mom. And my subconciousness knew that. Our emotions are very clear, but our ego protects us from having to deal with them. That's why it's almost like my younger self, my subconciousness saw all the trauma that I was going to go through and planted this song in my head to come back when I'm ready to and put the pieces back together. It all makes sense now. I confused my feelings with the truth, when there was me and you. Thank you Disney for giving back my childhood to me. I'm sorry to myself. I'm sorry mom. I am ready to love me in the right way, to love you in the right way, and forgive both of us. We didn't know better. 🤍

After almost fifteen years I'm still noticing new things to admire in HSM. Here, in the stairway shot, the chorus effect is turned on. But you don't notice it, because Gabriella is in a stairwell, surrounded by negative space, so the "change in acoustics" seems perfectly natural!
Gabriella doesn't know how to deal with conflicts, she just sings a sad song and leaves....
