EDIT: You could actually leave boats by right clicking them!! I was a FOOL and couldn't figure it out while recording - Oh well, still interesting that you could do the BOAT WIGGLE!
Is it possible to mod Minecraft beta versions? Like new skins, items, blocks, monsters?
I remember playing this version of Minecraft many years ago when you could push squids off pillars and they’d fly away
I love it when Grian revisits Beta, reminds me of the Evo series
@squidd the kid so grian had an ending and season 1 ended after beating the ender dragon, then the others moved on to season 2 and grian dipped out becoming part of the in universe representation of the viewers, The Watchers
@Procrastination God where?WAIT I SEEFOSH FRICKEN DANG IT-
I've been rewatching the Evo series, and I had just finished the 1 hour episode when this was uploadedEdit: Finished rewatching it
Still my favourite ever Minecraft series
7:51 mentioned Evo
Interesting that Grian's done this *and* is bringing up Evo. Since people in the hernitcraft fandom really *love* being up Evo's lore from what I've found. Maybe this is a call to action to watch Evo so Grian can have some Evo stuff appear through the Rift and it not be completely lost on everyone?
@Nightsky terrors agreed.
@•Moon’Storm• YES!!! IF THAT ISNT CANON, THAT IS NOW A HEADCANON
@TehKazlehoff that’s obviously impossible tho lol
I love evo!
i love how Grian brings back Evo, just knowing that he hasn’t forgotten it is just HSVHSHSJS
I KNOW ITS SO Sudhudgoshd
This is so nostalgic
"I found boats weird in beta and they where the bane of mc."Ethoslab posting a boat highway tutorial kickstarting one of the greatest Canadian troll minecrafters ever.
Imagine a new Evo series, but with some of the hermits as well! I'd love to watch something like that!
So nostalgic to see the old versions of MC. I was someone who was a player since it was browser only and to see how far this game has come is awesome
Yea I remember I played it on the browser didn’t know what I was doing at that time 😂
I would LOVE to see a shortened version of the evo series, where everyone came back together for it. I loved it so much. My favorite part was when Grian said “I can’t imagine doing what those guys on hermitcraft do. It’s absolutely crazy.” And now to see where he is. I’ve been a fan of the channel for so long. It’s amazing to see how far you’ve gone, and I’m sure I’ll stick with your channel for as long as you go. Your videos are on another level of Clip-Share. It’s crazy to see just how much your channel has grown since then.
This video has triggered so much nostalgia. All the old minecraft mechanics, textures, and sounds bring me back.
old explosion is the best 😊
Food not stacking actually made perfect sense back when it replenished your hearts. You had to pick your fights carefully, cause the amount of healing items you had on you was limited by your inventory.
I'd even go so far as to say it's better and more balanced than the current food system.

It would be amazing if Grian brought back Evo. There has been so many new updates and new friends since the original Evo, so I think an Evo season 2 would be really interestingEdit: what if they did Devo where the watchers devolve the server to try and stop them from progressing. Just a cool little idea I had that I think would be perfect to bring back watcher lore
Man.. I miss Evo. Wouldn’t it be a miracle if some similar series could ever be brought back.
They did go to Alfa or beta in the season 6 area 77 time travel thing
@SilverDiamond wow, thanks for the suggestion of bugmancx, going to bing watch this series!!
Check out sb737
Fr! I miss it a L O T
i miss watcher ：（
Grian's genuinely scream when that creeper showed up was the best thing I have ever heard.
I was there when you couldn't turn logs horizontally, stairs only in the "stair" position and no running. It's astounding how much Minecraft has changed but I changed along it and 10 years later, still playing it!
@Emily An omg yes their buildbattles were always so fun
cool to see. Edit: Speaking of witch remember Taurtis? I wonder where he is now?
When I started watching you, you were known as the "old school" guy, always clinging to older versions of the game without updating. Evolution was the first time you had experienced some later additions, I remember. Nice call back, I loved that series!
A micro series where you spend a few episodes in each version would be pretty fun to watch.
@-FutureTaken- wish it wood come back peple clearly like it still
@Elisabeth sun evo is old and ended early
Just search up Minecraft EVO lol
I just want to see more watcher grian
Please make this if you see this Grian!
@LadyGwynn Oh yeah I remember the mafia! I loved their secret base in the subway lmao
Next life, every session or two is a jump forwards a few versions or if you die you get transfered forwards into that next version early to get a leg up
Hm... now that you've made a call back to EVO, it makes me wonder what the next iteration of Last Life might be, and whether it might be related... It could be quite interesting to watch the group play in a Beta world, or possibly a modded-to-seem-like Beta world, if those mods exist...
where I finally actually played the game for an amount of time. That old damage sound is so good.
I remember when the added beds, that definitely changed the feel of the game. My friend and I also got into multiplayer the day it released, we built a base about 15,000 blocks from spawn then dug a tunnel most of the way back. There was no nether at that point so it was a slow process.
one of the weirdest things i remember from beta was the fact that monsters would almost always spawn if you tried to sleep? it didnt matter how lit-up the place was or if you were sleeping in an completely enclosed space, monsters would spawn. im not sure when they removed this bug/feature, but good riddance lmao even now years and years later i still sleep with my sword in hand just in case a zombie wakes me up when i sleep
2 block walls or placing you bed from 2 blocks away from outside space, no mobs
I still have so many weird habits from playing when Minecraft first came out despite not having played the beta in years, it's so strange remembering why they formed in the first place!
Grian mentioning Evo again after so long has got my theory crafting mind into gear
@Budgie Cute damn you basically need frame by frame to see that
@Hydro ohh! interesting if you pause just right you can see the watcher sign!
@Boss but he said in a mcc that the rift isn't connected to evo
Would love to see some hermit craft overlap via the rift
Theory:The squid's model was originally a cow and while modeling the squid and changing code to how the squid behaves - I believe that they forgot some tiny things like the place where you milk cows and it was the same place as where you milked the squid due to some messed up code and stuff.
When making the squid, they copied the Cow class code and turned it into a squid, but they forgot to remove the cow's right click code from the squid.
This is the exact version when I first started playing. I did try that ancient version that didn't even have world generation yet, it was just a pregenerated area but this version is where I finally actually played the game for an amount of time. That old damage sound is so good.
Truly appreciate the confidence you showed in my channel growth.♥️I have something huge for you, Note me with the above name..
"The combat mechanics were extremely primitive, where you could just see how fast you can spam your sword." I play Java but I'm pretty sure this is still how combat works in Bedrock in 2022 😂
23:40*I’m honestly impressed by the time and effort you put into these videos, Keep it up!*😄
My guess, for the squid milk, is that they created the squid by cloning the cow mob and altering it from there aesthetically.
Literally what happened. Jeb was new to working on mc at the time so he wasn't familiar with the process for making a mob. So when making a new mob he decided to just copy paste the code for the cow.
@NHJ It was Jeb who developed the squid, Notch would not have done such a mistake.
That is correct.
yeah that's obviously just what happened
Man, those were the days. Beta 1.2 to full release 1.2.5 were the glory days for me. Some of the very best memories in my life were made playing these nostalgic versions of Minecraft. Thanks for the blast from the past Grian.
hey Grian, just found out something you'll love for future builds, you know how the wall blocks could never be used as walls on a house, well they fixed that, just use your frame that you make out of wood blocks, and attach the wall blocks all the way and they'll work like vertical slabs basically, it's really cool, saw a video that pointed this out
I feel old watching this. I immediately thought Grian was joking when he said that he didn't remember how to craft a fence seeing as I always forget how to craft fences in newer versions. I'm not even in my twenties yet!
Nostalgia really hits hard looking back at old Minecraft. Its amazing to see how much the game itself has grown as well as the community.
Squid milk explaination:They copied the cows code to make the squid. That's why they can be milked and also they don't sufficate.
@Noxmore they have an article somewhere where they confirmed that they copied and pasted the cow code. Presumably because the person who added it was new and thus unfamiliar with the codebase
That explains why they would always sink to the bottom.
@Goncalo Balança If OP is correct, it means they copied the code from cows, then changed the EntityRenderer and made it unable to drown.
so that means cows couldn't drown in water?
Squids could also fly in the air for a while. I had a few flying squids in my old world
I would imagine the idea of getting a milk bucket from a squid could have been a placeholder for devs to later add squid ink into the game, but ended up being removed in place of squids just dropping ink when they die
I don't remember exactly when I started playing Minecraft, but I remember pork chops not stacking, not having a hunger bar, endermen and village structures (no villagers even...) being a big deal when they got added. the nostalgia was real with this one.
I remember when lily pads broke boats and not the other way aroundLoved that reference to the evo series at the end, it'd be cool if there was another one like that
Zisteau had a cool evo series.
@LeBoots Or every death.
@LeBoots That's already a thing. Look at Grian's EVO series.
@BlockedUser ok thanks
@LeBoots that would be so cool!
Hearing Grian yelling “THIS IS NOT NORMAL” while holding a bucket of milk on a steve skin was something I never knew I needed
I started playing back in beta and even though it was weird and very broken in some ways it was still so much fun. I started even before squids, before there was a nether, beds, wolves, endermen, biomes and so many other things. Logs used to burn forever, spiders didn't climb walls, the only wood was oak and you had to break wood slabs with a pickaxe. And don't even get me started about minecart weirdness, there were only plain rails, minecarts and furnace minecarts. Redstone was extremely limited, there was redstone dust, torches, blocks, buttons, pressure plates and levers, that was all. Even though it was a very limited game back then I still loved it and still do.
there was never a version with only furnace minecarts, they were added alongside chest minecarts
Such a nostalgic episode. I remember making house but whenever I use stairs, and misplaced them, I was like "ugghhh,, noooo. I have to break it again?" because then It turned into block. 😂And also just some idea; how about you combine life series and Evo? Three lifes with the server evolving from time to time. It would be awesome
Martyn totally didnt make it cannon, but for now all we can do is wait and call it fanFICTION until it becomes fanREALITY in hopefully the next series!!
Nostalgia really hits hard looking back at old Minecraft. It’s amazing to see how much the game itself has grown as well as the community.
@Bandit The beloved now it's 858
my nostalgia came from that minecraft evolution logo
@Hellireptile now it's 459
Would love to see Evo make a come-back in some form! Perhaps a mix of Evo and the Life series? Start in early beta, and every session someone dies, the server updates to the next big-ish update, like how Evo did!
I remember the time beds were added and how controversial this was. A loud group (not sure whether majority or minority) did not like the addition of beds. They'd let you skip one of the things that actually made the game a bit more difficult. It's also why I was so surprised that the Phantom won a mobvote later, since initially people didn't want beds and then people wanted to be forced to sleep.
I remember this too. The addition of beds was the first real game-changing update that I experienced, in the sense that it actually changed the "feel" of Minecraft for me. Perhaps on the same level as the addition of hunger, testificates, or the combat update.

You also had to break wooden slabs with a pickaxe since they were actually retextured stone slabs
@Norskel I used to make my houses (wooden boxes) with slabs in other to be immune to my friends trying to burn it
Petrified oak slabs are still in the creative menu. I found this out the day I built a roof in creative and discovered that the oak slabs I thought I selected were actually petrified wood. Oops.
Its always fascinating to see how some aspects in Minecraft stayed exactly the same from the beginning, whereas most have undergone radical changes.
What about the wooden staircase having stone particles? Me and my cousin went a whole month of playing Minecraft together until I pointed out that it was actually easier to use a pickaxe than an axe in mining the staircase when I'd just lost my axe and only had a pickaxe.
I really hope Grian brings back the Evo Series. That was such a cool series
@The Secretary great minds think alike
@melon colli OMG I literrally hadn't seen your comment till I typed mine lmao
Last life Evo, could be a cool merger where every week a version change happens
ooh maybe for the next double life!! every episode is a new update
The early days of minecraft were amazing especially for those of us who started on the old gen console versions. The music is agreeably the best part of the early days and it has so much nostalgia for me now.
Hi! I'm a beta player here and I honestly remember a lot of these. Oh, and when beds were added, I think mobs could spawn like right next to you. I remember my brother playing and he goes to sleep, but a creeper *outside* blows him up
Oh my god, I remember playing the earlier days of Minecraft when ever you would crash boats and it would automatically turn into sticks and wooden planks. It was a nightmare constantly having to re-craft them!
Also, when a boat hit a lily pad, the boat broke. Made swamps a pain to get through.
I loved minecraft evolutions it was such a fun series to watch glad to see that Grian still remembers it.
I truely hope this is a teaser to a new EVO SPM, it would be awesome to witness the evolution of minecraft with nowadays builders like scar or Bdubs
@Shahni Sinclair yeah, geniunely. i miss evo, it left us off at SUCH a cliffhanger outside of grians series which ended of nicely enough. would love to have seen what happened next. (also tbh i kinda miss evo in a nutshell)
if EVO ever came back, I would simply pass away /pos
if it's not i will be upsetti spaghetti
I never considered this idea before but omg that would be absolutely amazing I really hope that's what this video really is for
Man that'd be so cool, EVO was great
this really hit my nostalgia right in the gut honestly. I remember having one of my bases surrounded by furnaces on the very first multiplayer server I ever joined :)
I was 7 when Minecraft first came out, so I consider myself to be a part of the younger group when it comes to the game. And though I was never a video games type of person, Minecraft had such a huge impact on my life. It’s funny to see how silly block game influenced our childhoods so much that even seeing the old block textures or hearing the old music is enough to make a grown man cry. Especially realizing how much Minecraft has impacted the Clip-Share community. I’m so grateful for this game and the memories it made, even remembering back to the really questionable game design of beta.
As someone who downloaded Minecraft maybe around…um…3 years ago, it was pretty surprising for me to see such ridiculous things Minecraft used to have. The most annoying thing tho, not in Beta, was *netherack*Thank god Mojang decided to change it… 😌😏
This video was so interesting to watch, it feels like ages since grian made a non hermitcraft / life video
7:51 God I miss the Evolution Series, I was sad to see it simply die out not long after Grian became a watcher. But then again, they had pretty much reached the newest minecraft version at that time, so there wasn't a lot left unless they became another SMP like Hermitcraft (not saying I would've minded that, but they wouldn't be all that unique anymore).
They could've started adding mods every couple months.
Oohh myyy gooosh7:39The callback to the Minecraft Evo seriesThat was when I first started watching GrianThat triggered some nostalgia for me.Who else was there at that time?
love the little reference to evo. I'd love to see you try to revisit it with some of the hermits or last life crew and see the way they work through the older versions of the game!
i love beta 1.7; sometimes i go back to it because its so different. 1.19 is amazing, the caves and world gen are crazy and theres so much, but beta 1.7 is like... slow paces and fairly relaxed, but at the same time night and caves are insanely scary because its super dark and theres no sprinting. ive played since like 2011 so its awfully nostalgic, but even in modern versions going to the slow paced style of gameplay not using enchants and stuff can be nice and relaxing, even if its slowi kinda wish there was like some merged version. stuff like no sprinting and the slow pace and the like, significantly more scary nature of it for some reason, but with the new world gen and blocks and stuffalso; sweet evo reference
I loved the Evo series and hope y'all do it again one day.
I did not know about the boat wiggle, because shifting was never a thing to leave boats until the boat rework. It had never crossed my mind to crouch in one as you right clicked to exit lol. Also I miss the machine bow. It was so fun to just spam :p.I miss the nice green grass of beta.
Imagine if the new life series is based on going through the different updates of Minecraft and obtaining idk a certain item to get into the next update, and if you didn't you would lose a life. Start off with 5 lives, red lives could kill as usual etc
And then after death you could still help some players out and their name is purple 🤔Sorry I’m looking at stuff for the watchers lol
I love this vid. Grian doing vids like this is really nice. the fact it's grian doing this vid makes it 100x better
Two things I want to add: 1) the reason why you could milk squids is because originally they had the exact same code as cows (and they could even fly out of the water, very weird looking). And 2) the fence glitch where you get stuck is only on Multiplayer (Grian was right(multiplayer Minecraft was even weirder than singleplayer))
Those boats were actually useful thanks to Etho's EATS Road designs! Minecarts were voodoo back then with those paralleling slingshot setups needed to give boost, plus iron was hard to come by with the slower mining speeds. EATS roads were super cheap on resources, and with Etho's boat dispenser designs, boats could basically function just like minecarts and rails do today! Huge shout out to Etho for the early day ingenuity, there's a reason he's a legend in the community :D
the EATS roads and the old fast climbing ladder with the water on the side are two things I wish had stayed in the game. We have alternatives with the magma block and slowsand and the ice roads, but it'll never be quite the same
I honestly loved the old Minecart boosters, the minecart physics in general back then were interesting, while the normal speed was lower, the glitch responsible for the Minecart boosters to work back then seemed to break it and made you go quite fast and not slow down for a significant amount of time. If you used enough minecarts in a single booster you could boost at the bottom of the world and make it all the way to the top of the world without any noticeable drop in speed.
I always wonder why it took me so many years of knowing about minecraft, before starting to play minecraft. But seeing vids of the early versions I am kinda glad honestly. We had decent games back then, we didn't need to play this weird thing.
Oh man I remember evo, that was such a good series!! You should bring it back someday, that's how I was introduced to your channel, I always liked forward to the next episode
I'd forgotten a lot of these little quirks. I sometimes still think of some features as new and then realise they were added like 8-9 years ago. None of the newer updates seem to have had the same impact on me as the old ones back then, so they stick in my mind a lot more.
4:43, I went to beta 1.7 and for some reason, the bed recipe that I have used for the past 5 years didn’t work and I looked it up and it didn’t give me any results, however, I can memorize every recipe in 1.19, although I haven’t properly played with everything
Back in the day, not having crafting recipes was part of the fun of the game. Imagine starting a world with friends. They show you how to make crafting tables, furnaces, torches, tools, and doors. And then you are left to explore. Bit by bit you uncover how to make things like armor, boats, rails, shears, etc. You figure out that sand smelts into glass! It was a wildly adventurous time.
@Mysticalmaid Paul Saurs Jr was everyone's Minecraft teacher :)
I agree, and a better time overall, because if you wanted it to just be that, to just play with your friends and learn by means of others, then you could, it created little myths, and it also made the game 100x more fun, for reference it took me multiple months to learn you could craft in the first place. (Bedrock when it was ancient ancient.)
i used to make trapdoor windows cause i didnt know glass smelted into sand lol
As a bedrock beta player the older versions of the game were so much weirder. Chests just didn’t work when you were in creative, you couldn’t bring items from other game modes like creative so you had to lay down the blocks in order so you could get diamonds it was very strange
This didn’t seem that long ago!! I remember building in this version and loving it!!
I've been playing Minecraft since the very beginning and boy did this take me back haha, builds were so limited with designs as we just didn't have the blocks!
would love you to make a series going through all the significant stages of mc's development. Its so nostalgic seeing things, maybe if you by some stretch had an old world in one of the early versions you could show us around it, idk what your age demographic is but it was really nice seeing the game I grew up playing
My first experience with a creeper was thinking it was some kind of bush.Absolutely NOBODY expected that a tree could explode.
I've seen some call it a cactus
I started playing on a friend’s account a few months before the end of the beta. I ummed and aaahed on buying into the beta, only to buy the game the day after it went into full release. I haven’t really played for a good 7 years. A lot of the things you’ve mentioned are things I just sort of remember as normal for Minecraft….
Ah this takes me back although I played just before slime was added but I still remember the cobblestone slab being that texture it was so fun seeing this again :)
I’d love to see a series like this where grian tests old updates ether by him self or with friends like Joel, scar or even mumbo & jimmy (kinda like evo smp but only one episode for each updates)
...and yet by this point, people had already built fully functional 16-bit computers with just redstone dust and torches. 🤩
Funny you should mention that because Dagnel is currently doing a "collect every block in Minecraft in release order" series where he goes version by version getting one of each block as they get added. It's a pretty fun trip through history. I've been playing since the first Halloween update that added the Nether and remember all these bugs and glitches. That stair rendering glitch and not being able to get them back after placing them bugged me forever.
Grian, have you ever thought of mentioning to the other hermits maybe starting a season in beta or maybe just when the game released and going through the versions. I know this sounds similar to Evo but I feel like the hermits would add an interesting twist to the challenge, if you could even classify it as a challenge
Thanks for watching and commenting stay tuned for more uploadsYou've been selected among my lucky winners 🏆🎉🎉quickly send am direct message to claim your prize!...
Back the beta days, clay was rarer than diamonds as well, since there was no swamps. The firespread was insane.
Yeah that would be a great idea! Maybe Call it... Hermitcraft update evolution series? or is that too much of a mouthful?
@Jacob Stehle And the brick used to be a pain to mine up too. I remember having a double chest back then full of brick stacks. Showing how much adventuring out I did to get all that clay needed for that.
Bro us xbox mc players were down bad once we got all the clay in the map since it had a specific map size then. Left us with basically nothing
Brick houses used to be such a flex. I remember having a hard enough time making a brick fireplace.
I grew up with this game, and I remember having to learn how to plant seeds from a tutorial. Also I first had minecraft pocket addition and that game was so behind when the other versions would get updated and it really confused me lol
Never forget you couldnt place fences on top of eachother and you had to slowly build downwards with them
Dianna 🥂T[A]P Me!! to Have [𝐒]𝐄𝐗 With 𝐌𝐞Hey honey 🤤, you can stay just help get rid of thebruh bich
i love it when hermits squeal after getting jumpedlike how grian screamed when the creeper came out of nowhere
"The combat mechanics were extremely primitive where you could just see how fast you could spam your sword"Minecraft Bedrock:
@Cuddlie you say that as if 1.9+ pvp doesn't have movement and aim, and perhaps even more strategy now that shields are a thing
Ouch, that’s stung-
@Cuddlie spam clicking was stupid, i'm glad it's gone.
@Cuddlie i agree
@J.X.X. R Im sorry if im taking this comment too seriously, but they always trigger me a lot, it's not about how fast you can spam your sword, whether you click 100 or 2 cps doesn't really matter if you have some experience, it' all about the movement, aim, rodding, etc :) I will argue that 1.9+ combat is way more primitive, but in the end i am probably just overreacting to some random comment please ignore me i just needed to write something sorry ok bye sorry for wasting your time
Man, that takes me back ...almost. I didn't start playing until Beta 1.3, so this was 1 version prior. Still lots of weird stuff.
It would be cool to see a transitioning Minecraft version game where it starts out in the very first version of Minecraft and seamlessly transitions to the next update from then. This is including the mini window you’d have in the early version and you couldn’t full screen. It would be cool if all this happened automatically without you having to change versions every time you want to switch. Just go out 1000 blocks and the game automatically updates to the next version while in game.
This video was very nostalgic from the perspective of someone who has been playing minecraft from nearly the beginning as a kid. I remember when infinite chunks simply didn't exist and you were confined to a certain amount of space (at least on the mobile version). I quite literally laughed at a few of the things you mentioned (like the fun times with the boats) simply because I had forgotten what it was like to play minecraft back when I was 8.
I'm pretty sure cobble staires had the same properties as wooden staires back then, so you needed an axe for them
I don’t know why but there’s just something so calming about watching the night go by in a Timelapse with the Minecraft music in the background
I was getting nostalgic from it
”Night” is not allowed in any minecraft related things!>:(
I remember playing Minecraft with the old version I loved to look at the sky :)
Interesting that Grian's done this and is bringing up Evo. Since people in the hernitcraft fandom really love being up Evo's lore from what I've found. Maybe this is a call to action to watch Evo so Grian can have some Evo stuff appear through the Rift and it not be completely lost on everyone?
