  • Joe Rogan's dream fight that never happened is prime Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Prime B.J. Penn. B.J. Penn 's career doesn't look very impressive on paper compared to the Russian's undefeated record, however, he's consistently heralded as one of the best lightweights ever. He is noted as being incredibly talented, earning a BJJ black belt in just three years.

During his title run, BJ was regrded as the best LW ever. And he was also a dual champion. And did a super fight with GSP.
And fought Machida when Machida weighed 215 lbs.

@G GSP being a welterweight doesn't mean there wasn't a problem of BJ's ground game being exploitable. Khabib is 100 times the wrestler GSP was.

@John Brown I can't believe I am explaining this, but being bigger and stronger makes it easier to hold some down. Bj beat amazing Wrestlers his size. Who is the best wrestler Khebab beat? Go watch some fights.

GSP chopped and ate away at Penn on the feet. He cooked him on over reacting to faints and used his 7 inch reach advantage to blast him with the jab. Penn was a world class JiuJitsu Champion and had hands of doom. Good luck laying ontop of him and not getting caught without doing damage on the feet

@Varawhat does islam vs volk have to do with khabib vs gsp?

    • Vara
      Vara 4 months ago

@Gareth Lloyd Islam and khabib fighting styles are very similar, Islam is the better striker and more defensive but khabib does have better ground and pound. My point is that GSP would be able to keep the fight standing and with his faints, foot work, and stance switches be able to outwork khabib on the feet. I also don't sense any danger for GSP on the ground unless he is gassed which I don't see happening

He fought out of his natural weight class his whole career. He was a natural 145 but won belts at 155 and 170. It’s all relative and I love when people harp back to the previous generations.
BJ was the f*****g man at lightweight in his generation, just the same as Khabib was in his time.
It does my absolute nut in when casuals say things like “BJ penn and GSP may have been good back then but theyd get killed by todays best”….it’s all relative, and if you think that way then you kill your own argument right at the start, because if it’s true, then you’re saying that no fighter of any generation is valid unless they can stay at the top for all eternity.

I still feel like Khabib would win. Since innovation in the sport changed it so much.
