Watching Andrew over the years, I am so happy with how good he has gotten at interviews. Everything flows so smoothly and he always gets unique insight from the people he interviews. Thanks Andrew, cheers from Kansas!

@Barry Allen Very good interviewers do this frequently to ease the person they're interviewing into a conversation.

Not a huge fan of MLS content but this is Wiebe at his best. Great interview. Especially for such a high profile and over-interviewed subject like Gregg. He can be very cagey and formulaic in interviews and Wiebe broke him down very effectively. Great job! Thanks!

Great interview. I like Gregg. I believe he is a manager who is growing into his role, leading a team who are growing into theirs. I expect them to show well in Qatar, get a lot of things right, learn from inevitable mistakes... and then win it all, at home, in 2026.

Problem is Sterling and Auba are clearly better. Pulisic should drop to mid level club to get regular playing time.

Pulisic will still have to prove himself and get ahead of Sterling. He has had numerous opportunities, and I doubt he will be able to compete because his touches and movements have been crap for a while now -- and that isn't down to being in different positions.

I thought it was a great interview Andrew. Gregg doesn't make it easy, you have to open him up a little bit and I thought you did a very good job of that.
To the people haranguing the questions, I'd pay to see you sit down with Gregg and try to go at him. He'd tear you apart. Not to mention there's a relationship to maintain if you ever hope to get the opportunity again. I don't agree with everything he does either but he's done a good job stewarding this young team, let's see what his approach can yield for us in Qatar.

    • David
      David 8 months ago +1

Exactly...if you ask him...why are you blackballing Brooks when it is obvious to everyone that he is one of our top 4 CBs, you have said in the past he has problems playing a high line but while you don't want to give away tactics its pretty clear you wouldn't play a pressing high line against a team like England or any other really high quality club unless losing 4-0 is what you want. AND THEN you never get another interview with anyone in US Soccer again and are praying they approve your press credentials for the next match.

    • Andrew Wiebe
Andrew Wiebe 8 months ago +2

@David I don’t cover their matches in person anymore with regularity. I don’t worry about the next ask. That takes care of itself. Press folks know if you do your job with integrity (and that also means asking tough questions). If you think he was gonna give more on Brooks now than he has before, you don’t know Gregg. I do wish I could have gotten him now after the CL started instead of two weeks ago. Lots of newsworthy stuff to dig into that wasn’t as pertinent then.

Great interview by Wiebe. I think Gregg has been consistent through his entire tenure - even when fans were screaming "Berhalter Out" ... what he has done with this team in the lead-up to this World Cup has been among the greatest achievements of any USMNT coach... and now the question becomes: How will people look back on the US performance in Qatar? I think this team has a belief and a spirit to it that we haven't seen since 2002... I expect quarterfinals or semi-finals for this team (or further).
