  • Published on Nov 18, 2022 veröffentlicht
  • When Russia invaded Ukraine, a little known Canadian manufacturer kicked its production line into high gear.
The company is called Roshel, and it makes high-tech armoured personnel carriers.
A hundred of them are now being used by Ukrainians, with hundreds more on the way. How do they do it?
Mike Drolet got a rare look inside for The New Reality and found their secret weapon.

It's a really smart move to reach out and employ Ukranian refugees. It provides them with not only a means to contribute to the war effort, but also find employment to help them make a living in Canada. Roshel gains labor that is strongly motivated to do their best on the manufacturing line. It's the sort of rare situation where everyone wins.

His wife is Ukrainian and he's been on a 'hit' list in ruzzia. Doesn't get more to the point than ever. This is a multinational effort. Goes to show that we're all stronger when we work together. Shame there aren't more people like that.

For these types of entrepreneurs one can only have the utmost respect.
Not just for the Ukrainian war side; just overall getting a company up and running and doing this well in just 6 years.

Russia mostly uses artillery and missles, not bullets so these vehicles will only prolong the conflict by a few days. They need fuel, but Ukraine has a lack of fuel. Especially diesel. Russia wiped out Ukraines refining capacity.
Russia has put out the lights across Ukraine. No heat or running water in most urban areas. Mayors are telling citizens to leave the country. It's only a matter of time. Russia rolls heavy once the winter freeze comes. These armored trucks will not stop them.

@Yosetime We do have something similar. It's called the Bushmaster, and it's slightly larger than the Canadian Shield. We've already sent 90 odd of them to Ukraine. Oddly enough - They have no bull bar. But the front end is cast iron, they do weigh 15 tons each, and come with a remotely mounted machine gun at the front, so a bull bar was probably considered superfluous. My worry is the Putin Regime won't survive a loss in this War, which leaves him with Tactical Nukes as his only option to Win...

Our countries are so much alike. But the quality of our people is what truly makes us great! Auzzies and Canadians...2 peas in a pod!

I met a Ukrainian nurse the other day at the hospital for my friend who was getting treated for cancer, she was an angel 😇 and she worked harder then 5 people easily.
Every patient was amazed at the rate she was being able to help everyone and with a smile 😊 on her face and always making sure all her patients were happy and satisfied with her service.
We all marveled at her character and we all told her how much she impressed everyone and how amazing she represented her people and country in America 🇺🇸.
She was an absolutely sweetheart but extremely intelligent, she said her father was an engineer in Ukraine 🇺🇦 in the times of Soviet and she got her energy and wisdom from her father.
Either way it was a pleasure to meet someone with some an amazing strong 💪🏻 yet caring character.
May the war stop 🛑 ✋ and May peace ☮️ and prosperity come instead.
I hope 🤞 all bad leaders will have a change of heart and stop this madness for the sake of the wonderful citizens they have in their amazing and beautiful countries.
Respect to Ukrainian 🇺🇦 people for being so strong 💪🏻

This just brought me to tears!! I am so proud to be Canadian! Some countries might call us too nice. But this video proves we can compete, we can help our neighbors, and we can fight! I had no idea we were making these vehicles. They are amazing! And if they help to save even one life in Ukraine, it will be worth it!
Very impressed with the owner of this company. His vision, his tenacity, his willingness to bring in the Ukrainian staff and get the job done. Brilliant all the way around! Thank you Sir!
These vehicles (geez I wish I could drive one!!), the winter military uniforms, the top-notch, hands-on training that Ukrainians have been receiving from Canada since the annexation of Crimea 8 years ago, have all come together to make sure that Ukrainian soldiers stay in the fight and win! And I believe they will. In some ways they already have.
This victory in Ukraine is a victory for all free and sovereign countries. The way the world has come together in just 9 months has changed the course of our future. Everywhere. Nobody will ever again mess with Ukraine! Or any NATO country. I think the message is getting across. Russia is still looking for a stepping-off point. Russia can't win. And I am proud that my country is participating in the Ukrainian victory. Slava Ukraine! Slave Canada!

4:53 I am not sure I have ever seen vehicles like this get "tested" against near missile or shell hits. Mostly against anti-material weapons or IEDs... this is impressive if so. No injuries from a hit like that, where fatalities would likely otherwise be expected is impressive.

I'm a Russian Ukrainian born and raised in Canada and here in Toronto we've been hearing constant military helicopters, seeing transportation of other military supplies going towards the direction of our main airport here. First time I heard the military helicopter truly frightened me. I can't and don't even wanna imagine of how many helicopters, tanks, bombs, and missiles distrub the quietness.
A Ukrainian man that was helping me move recently has sons back in Ukraine and they went to protect our land. 20 year old men...I can't even imagine what he feel as a father. But his sons are stubborn, just like every other Ukrainian that I know, including myself. We've just had some friends come here to Toronto. The stories they've told us so far are heartbreaking.

I did 3 tours in Iraq as a mechanic and recovery operator. I saw metal armor sliced through like it was a paper target against bird shot. But the ballistic glass is something I have seen stand up to ALLOT of damage. And it saved my life as well over there. If I hadn't modified my recovery vehicle a week earlier to mount ballistic glass panels to the front of my drivers hatch. I would have died over there when my escort vehicle hit a mine. Ballistic glass will stop allot of things that metal armor simply fails at. But RPGs still go right through obviously lol. I wish we could make vehicles completely out of the stuff. Its crazy how strong glass can be against impacts you see on a battlefield.

@Rick Mentore - "I always thought the glass parts were the weak point on armored vehicles."
They are. I'm sorry, but the comment of glass being stronger than steel is just silly. You can figure it out easily by thinking how many armored vehicles of any kind have you seen that have glass as protection anywhere else than windows.

I guess the down side with these vehicles is that the chances of being able to still drive the vehicle while under certain types of attacks are lower (while more expensive vehicles may be able to still drive you out of there). But at a lower price, overall it still helps protect a lot more people.

Using an existing civilian chassis and powertrain is perfect for maintenance. Combined with their bolt on armour design you get a low budget vehicle with good basic protection.

I was trained to fire multiple times into the same spot on armored glass or armor. You can’t allow your glass to take fire without getting out of there or get ready for it to open up. It only buys you a few warning shots, it isn’t like armor.

From what I have learned about this conflict is that NATO countries werent prepare for this type of modern warfare. On a positive note, they are learning so much from this conflict that its actually beneficial to continue supporting Ukraine with military equipment and financial support. Its horrible that the cost of this is in Russians and Ukrainians lives.

    • Khonh lo
      Khonh lo 3 months ago

@Melinda Cadarette I dont know if its really overblown. Americans has always been isolationist. It just global issues that kept the public engaged with the world. The last two presidential elections has nothing to do with foreign policy but rather domestics focus. I wouldnt be surprised if in two years, the next president is going to be a domestic President.

    • Melinda Cadarette
      Melinda Cadarette 4 months ago

@Khonh lo NATO was created to stop Russian aggression. It will last as long as they have a reason to. And the US NATO debacle was overblown.

    • Khonh lo
      Khonh lo 4 months ago

@Alexey 9 if you really believe that then all that scrambled to get secondary and third tier military equipment sitting in some countries warehouse was all for show? NATO was pretty much an extension of EU. They thought they could dominate the economic sphere of Europe. There's a reason for many years, the only countries calling for further expansion of training and equipment were those in Eastern Europe. Especially the Polish and Baltic states. The US public was pissed that NATO countries weren't even paying their fair share of the collective defense. There were even pushed to end NATO all together as Americans see China as the greater threat. Matter of fact, the US was in the process of moving many of it's equipment to the Pacific. I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years, NATO collapse all together.

Great story for all, Ukraine, Canada and those who need work. Very heartwarming. I have visited Ukraine many times, walked the streets which have been bombed, I support 2 families there... Canada needs to do much more and we can.
During WW2, Canada had a population of 11 million, our military effort was composed of over 1 million. we have done this before and we can do this now.
God Bless and Glory to Ukraine
