True. Luke walked into a room to meet the Emperor. He walked out again dragging the dying Darth Vader and the Emperor was dead af.
Loyal Imperials had to have nightmares about that.

Unfortunately for me, it was spoiled. I've seen some people talk about how it was a well kept secret, but I did see a headline that implied this result on the day of the episode, but before I had seen it. I watched the episode with my mother, and she was surprised, but the impact of the reveal was much less for me. Once I saw that it was a SINGLE x-wing, that confirmed what had been implied for me, rather than being allowed to be truly surprised. Fuck people that can't resist the urge to get a few more clicks by writing headlines for their articles that aren't completely spoiler free. To be honest, even this video fucks up in that respect. Can we get at least a WEEK before people put the full spoiler in their headlines, please?

During this time, Luke was an urban legend to the empire. Remember, by the end of return of the Jedi, he was responsible for the destruction of one Death Star. He was in a room with Darth Vader and the Emperor. From the perspective of any witnesses, the emperor never made it out, and he walked out with Darth Vaders dying defeated body. He‘s the only known living Jedi left. This is what is going Güterzugs Moff Gideons head as he watches in terror as a cloaked force wielding figure with a lightsaber easily dismantles his army of dark troopers because he knows it could be him.

picture you haven't seen your favorite superhero on the screen for close to 30 years and when they bring him back, he isn't this bigger than life hero anymore, it's a husk of the great hero he once was to you

When we last saw Luke, he was still learning the ways of the Force and had just overcome the biggest trial of his life. That was in 1983. I was 6 years old. I waited literally 37 years to see my childhood hero at the height of his powers. I'm not ashamed to say I cried like a fool during this scene. I was putting it together piece by piece. First was the X-wing. Then, the flowing black robe looked similar to his entrance into Jabba's palace. Third, we saw the green lightsaber. Last, we saw the glove on only the right hand. I knew when I saw the X-wing, but I was cautious because Disney had let us down so many times by this point. The glove was the final confirmation though. I was absolutely positive that it was Luke. I really can't remember the last thing that brought me that kind of happiness. Luke Skywalker was like a friend to those of us who grew up with the original trilogy. 2020 sucked, but it ended with a bang.

    • etherealtb
      etherealtb 2 years ago +18

Yes, it was great to see kick ass young Luke again, as until this, never thought how little of "kick ass" Luke we saw in RotJ. But, while TFA & TLJ Luke wasn't what I expected (not sure what I expected) I did get on board and loved it (while despising TRoS, I pretend it doesn't exist).
I loved grumpy old Luke, as since 1977, I too have changed from being an idealistic youth to disillusioned 54 year old.
But this was awesome too. Too bad there wasn't a pre-isolation Luke movie to bridge the gap, although guess we're kinda getting that now. They really are making all SW fans happy. Lol.

    • etherealtb
      etherealtb 2 years ago +3

@TED SHOT THAT again, Johnson did not put Luke on that island OR in that costume makeup. JJ did. Like it or not, Johnson merely tried to make sense of JJ's set up. Am I the only one who remembers Luke in TFA? Did people blink and miss him? Lol.

    • awesomeatronik
      awesomeatronik 2 years ago +23

@etherealtb true and tfa sucks for that, but rian johnson could have redeemed that luke, except he made luke an old whiney losser hermit instead of a super wise and powerful jedi master that was on the island for a cool reason. RJ could have also not directly made fun of the people who wanted to see luke come in swinging his laser sword and taking out the bad guys and saving every one.

    • etherealtb
      etherealtb 2 years ago +3

@awesomeatronikwell, Johnson MAY have responded better if people weren't screeching he ruined their childhoods! That had to be a shock. He should've responded better, but that was an honest response to people hating on something you'd worked hard on for 3 years & expected people to love, especially after the rave critical reviews. And Luke eventually DID kick ass & save everyone in TLJ, in an awesome, heroic way!
And Luke was ALWAYS whiney! Watch ANH & most of TESB again oh and the cut scenes in ANH. LOTS of whining from Luke! This was NOT out of character to revert to that. It wasn't the only option for Luke, it could've gone as you said. But it was 100% in character and only "ruined" Luke for those who didn't understand (or willfully forget) where the character started ANH & only remember where he ended in TRotJ. There's a difference between what you or I would've written and something being "bad" or "wrong". I think we can all agree TRoS really was actually bad, wrong and a large pile of poo!

    To paraphrase Obi Wan Kenobi:
"I just felt a disturbance in the Force...as if Star Wars fans across the generations suddenly cried out...in joy."
Luke's return was that of a legend, a true hero. He may not be the hero we deserved, but he is the hero we needed.

I love how they executed this scene. This is fan service done right. The build up is just awesome. First the X-Wing, then the cloaked figure, then the green lightsaber, the force theme, the black glove, the fighting style until finally the hood comes off. The makers knew the fans would go bonkers with every little reveal.

I love these reactions, no matter how many times I watch them. Full grown men with joy, wonder and tears of joy in their eyes because their hero is back. THIS is how Star Wars is supposed to make you feel. THIS is the joy and wonder we all felt when we became fans. The sequel trilogy failing to have a single moment like this is why it fails in my eyes.

Luke is a special kind of iconic character. He represents the best in all of us. One who aspires to be the greatest he can. A boy of humble beginings on a backlot planet that no one really visits. To grow up into a man and accept responsiblity in all that it requires of him. A hope for all us that we too can be great if we try. For new generations ahead to live by example.

My dad passed away unexpec tedly in July of 2020. He would tell me about how he drove an hour from the farm he grew up on to the nearest movie theater in 1977 to see the original Star Wars. We used to watch the original trilogy so much it drove the rest of my family a little insane. He even upgraded our home sound system with the excuse that "it can't be too loud if we're watching Star Wars". He took me to the midnight showing premiers of all the prequels and we also saw all of the sequels in the theater together. As soon as Luke's X-wing showed up in this episode, I was overwhelmed with emotion, nostalgia, and so many memories of enjoying our favorite nerdy escape. I could just see the smile on his face as this scene played out and Luke removed his hood to reveal the character he watched on the screen as a teenager and we watched together time after time. The tears I shed that night were for the joy of seeing Luke finally done right after nearly 40 years, but more than that, they were in his memory.
EDIT: Thank you all so much for the thoughtful and caring words of encouragement, and for sharing your stories with me. I'm proud to be a part of this fandom with you. It's nice to be reminded that I should't be afraid to share my experiences and that people can be genuine and kind, even if all we have in common is liking Star Wars. You guys have lifted my spirits.

The first Jedi training that Luke had ever learned was on Millenium Falcon by blinding himself and trying to stop the shooting from Training Droid as Kenobi taught him. Now, at this stage, Luke, just simply put on his cool hood and kicked droid asses while they attempted to shoot at him. He had, indeed, come a long way.
