It is definitely a technique that should be practiced. A couple extra pieces sometimes makes it not possible. And like this game you end up sacrificing pieces because you know you can get checkmate

Edit 2: Actually I believe that after Qh6 there’s f6 threatening to mate on g7 since the black queen is pinned and also clearing the diagonal for the bishop. If exf6 just Bd3+ and it’s mate in just a couple of moves; and if Nxf6 which I believe it’s the move that can hold longer, Bd3+ anyways and black has to sac the knight and then you get the queen and win.
