Decoding the Instagram Beauty Standard

  • Published on Sep 16, 2019 veröffentlicht
  • Influencers have now become the new beauty standard.
But what exactly is the new beauty standard? Well, I decided to find out for myself. I made a list of the Top 100 female Instagram stars purely based on following. Then I came up with 22 attributes that each woman would be judged on. These included things like:
    Hair color
    Hair length
    Neck length
    Face shape
    Body shape
    Eye color
    Clothing size
    Flatness of stomach
    Lip size
    Eye size
    Nose size
    Skin color
    Chest size
    Prominence of butt
After a couple weeks of gathering data and categorizing data, I can tell you that there is most definitely a formula and a specific beauty standard that the 100 most followed women on Instagram adhere to.
Watch the video to find out the results and to see me get photoshopped into a Top 100 Female Instagrammer!
Here is where I get all of my music! Epidemic Sound:

Bethany Anderson I’m not surprised that blonde is out. It has been for several years. It’s the Kardashian effect, and their look is from the Arab world. If you go to the Middle East the origins of their look is everywhere and to a whole other level. The in look, for the last few years has been and is right now, Arabic.

The fact that you slam all these influencers when you're one of them yourself. Can't you just get back to basics with your videos!? Instead your all about pleasing your social media fans.

ok but the plus-size ones aren't there because most of the women that are being followed are very active as they perform on stage or in front of the camera a lot. Maybe another count with just influencers and without people that are famous outside of the IG realm would be more accurate. Because I follow people like Ariana, Selena, Dove etc. for news on their acting and music 🤷🏻‍♀️

why is it weird that top 10 are not plus size? I think that is just instinctual

  • Denisa Neagoe
    Denisa Neagoe 10 days ago

I think this would've been more accurate if it would've been done strictly on instagram influencers/models. That is, people that made their name on social media and have little or no involvement with the general media. Beyonce, Selena Gomez and the rest of sorts made their name mostly through mainstream media so having a following on social media came with the fame they already had.

Instagram is great UNTIL you start coming across the instababe / traveller babes / traveller couple profiles, they are EXTREMELY negative spaces and they effect from teens right through to late forties. Ironically these people are incredibly insecure and then help to create the very insecurities they suffer from. It’s a horrible toxic cycle

  • EmmaJ.K.88
    EmmaJ.K.88 11 days ago

I’ve always found it weird that some people think hair and eye color should determine what “beauty” is suppose to be. Especially since I’ve seen and known plenty of natural blonde haired people (of any eye color) who are “plain” or “unattractive” looking (myself included). I have blonde hair and I’m definitely your average plain Jane. Hair or eye color does not determine what your face and body will look like obviously.

I think Ariana embodies that doe faced Audrey Hepburn thing. Which is unconventionally unexplainably attractive. That aesthetic has become the Ariana Grande archetype, so it's difficult for others to replicate or be inspired by it without being immediately labelled as an Ariana wannabe or crazed fan. That keeps her at the top.
So many beauty influencers have the similar partially Arabian esque large eyed arch brow aesthetic which is very Kardashian and Jenner but it's become so common that people can look past the butt and chest and arched eyebrows and plump lips like it's a benchmark to find other small differences in quality and that's why people are more forgiving towards women who look similar to Kylie. That aesthetic has transcended the person it originated from. You barely see "Kylie Jenner inspired" to describe makeup looks etc that look Kylie Jenner inspired because that is the norm now.
I also find it interesting that even the small eyed top 100 beautiful instagram women have huge eyes for asian standards.

  • Reality Bending
    Reality Bending 11 days ago

Isn't there a fundamental flaw in the study by virtue of the fact that you assume the reason the top women are being followed is beauty. I feel it might be more correct if you excluded people who were famous singers and actresses.

I think that most people have brown eyes in the top 100, not because brown eyes are more popular, but because more people just have brown eyes.

  • seokjinism cult
    seokjinism cult 13 days ago

maybe the % of brown eyed women is more because of it being a genetically common trait? I still see lighter coloured eyes being appreciated more for being unique and brown called "boring". Another factor that could be affecting the top 100 most followed females is the instagram algorithm suggesting these accounts to be followed by new users, and the popularity of these celebs. When I had instagram a couple years ago I would follow people like ariana grande as a fan not for her beauty. The top 10 are also top A listers in hollywood.
It's a well researched video though, and the photoshopped version of you looks just like most of the famous instagram beauty influencers.

Hi Cassey! I was just following one of your amazing work out (1st day of your summer challenge), and a thought just "pop"-ed in my mind : I just realized how much confidence and self acceptation it must take to film all of these work out videos, quite often, in such thight clothes every time, eversince the begining of your channel... It must have been so hard to accept that so many people would be able to judge your body and the way it naturally evolve through life... I mean I absolutely admire you for being able to just leave any negative thought behind, and just go... "Ok this is the way I am, and wether people like it or not, wether I think I look great or not... I'll just go with it and help people feeling confident too ! " It must be the reason why you are my fav fitness "teacher". Because you have a "human body". You're not trying to look like a model, a doll... Any non-realistic idea... You're just making us feel ok about our bodies too... Personal example : I do pole dance since 3 years now, (but not straight, had to take a lot of breaks because studies....) Now there is a pole set at my parents house, but I don't come home from my flat so often.... Well 2 things : your videos are the only work outs that makes me as happy as pole dancing, when I can't, and secondly, it helps me accepting my body in very revealing clothes such as pole dance ones. It's not easy, and I haven't fully accepted it yet. But I can tell you that you have achieved to set a much more healthy way of thinking about body images for me that it could have been by just following society's standards. And pretty sure it has been the same for a lot of others teenage girls / young adults too. So just a huge THANKS for that! You have a real super positive power! x x

I don't understand why people care so much about social media. If you took all the effort and time that people put into social media, and did something useful with it, we could really change this stupified world. Social media = zombie apocolypse. By the way Cassey, you fit into all this dumb social media, you are a part of it, constantly flaunting your perfected photos everywhere, then you tell everyone to stop caring about appearences and be happy with themselves. Tell me, how much time and effort did you put into your appearence for this video?..You are a hyprocrite!

This is why I love Taylor Swift! Always classy photos, empowering and confident in her body (which changed between the 1989 and Reputation era, and it's alright!) AND most of her posts are mostly about her music, advocacy or something fun... and cats! NOT just a picture to show her body or face on a fancy light for the heck of it. When she does, it's about art. Go see her pictures from Rolling Stone! They are amazing!

Men. Men are following more of these “influencers” than you know. Men watch women dressed like that in their private time and young women blindly follow THEIR standard. Barely clothed..big bits. Seriously?😏

I loved watching your video. Thank you for putting in all the hard work. I do have one comment though regarding the authenticity of the number of followers of the top 3 influencers (AG, SG and KK). Hundreds of IG influencers use bots to boost their audience numbers. I've heard of several IG influencers being able to acquire thousands (even millions!) of followers and likes by paying a third-party bot vendor.
Also - do we know if the followers of said IG influencers are male or female? I would be interesting to know if there is a difference between what men 'like/follow' and what women 'like/follow'. Again - I LOVED your research and THANK YOU for being so real!!!

I appreciate what Cassey is going for here, but this is not scientific. correlation does not imply causation, meaning that these beauty "standards" aren't necessarily what CAUSED their high amounts of followers. What if there are some kind of measures that aren't being looked at here - such as fame, net worth, etc? That could likely influence followers and it may have nothing to do with looks.
And some of these percentage differences such as fewer african-americans and only 2% redheads MAY actually be representative of the population. It would be more meaningful if you could compare these percentages to the general or overall instagram population... for example if 2% of women on instagram are redheads, then it makes sense that 2% of women in the top 100 would also be redhead. However, if 50% of women on instagram are redhead and then only 2% of women in the top 100 are redhead - clearly that's a disparity. Otherwise it's probably just a coincidence.
So while this can maybe be considered a case study and provides some interesting correlational info and descriptive detail, I wouldn't consider it scientific or necessarily super valid information. Which is fine, but I think this video kind of oversells the "findings".

Beauty is not a one-size-fits-all, it comes in countless different forms and we should embrace that. Instagram does everything *but* that... It forces one ideal on everyone.

Seeing the before and after photos is insane, because it doesn't even look like the same person anymore. Seeing the before and after of instagrammers photos proves the same thing. So many layers of makeup and edits are made that it no longer looks like the same person. That's not empowerment, that's opression in a way.
It's saying that, if you don't look like this, then you can't be beautiful. But everyone is born with different features, that's simply the way it is. There can not be only one beauty ideal, because we all meet people who look worlds apart different from each other, and we can still think they look beautiful while looking Different from one another. And the fact that we look different is also what makes someone look beautiful; because they don't all look the same.

It's sad how so many people are influenced to changing their natural features, because I think most look way better as themselves than when they try to cram themselves into the narrow instagram beauty ideal.

Also this is just my opinion but I gotta say I prefer the before version so much more! You look so beautiful without makeup as well :)
