First off, Imma correct the person from the video. Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexican Independence Day. September 16 is Mexican Independence Day. Cinco de Mayo refers to the Battle of Puebla during the Second French Intervention of Mexico War. On May 5, 1862, the French Army was surprisingly defeat by the Mexican army of the liberal government in Puebla. (Liberal here doesn’t mean modern day liberal. France had established a puppet government.) It was a moral victory for the Mexicans. Nowadays, the city of Puebla usually celebrates this victory every year. Most Mexicans don’t celebrate it. I know I don’t. It only became a thing here in the US during the 1960’s because of Chicano activism. Some connections were made between Cinco de Mayo the the American Civil War and in short, Cinco de Mayo became a thing we celebrate in the US.

As a Mexican American I celebrate it every year and with pride! I know it's not Mexico's Independence Day but it is part of Mexico's history and as a little girl this was the one holiday that was introduced to me here in America that celebrated people that looked like me! I love Cinco de Mayo! I connect with Cinco de Mayo a lot more than el 16 de Septiembre la Indepencia de Mexico. But I celebrate them both because I'll make any excuse to celebrate my ancestors!
