    Thanks to assistance, Ukraine can defend itself against the Russian occupiers, but it is very difficult to go on the offensive. The Ukrainians must liberate all of their territory, and we must help by providing tanks and other weapons.

    The Abrams would be excellent for training and defending Ukraine's northern border with solid supply lines to Poland, while freeing up the Leopards to fight on the front.

      Very difficult to support the Abrams in Ukraine. The US has a great logistics supply chain for it. Ukraine does not.

      @RuleofFive Poland is already training on Abrams. From Wikipedia: "Poland has bought 250 new American M1 Abrams tanks [...] 7 loaned training tanks have already been delivered to Poland as of July 2022."

    What I don’t quite get about all this, is that Germany has been supplying Ukraine with munitions since the beginning of this proxy war farrago; therefore, a tank or two is surely just a slight upgrade, but the principle is the same: military support for Ukraine.

      you are right in terms of logic. but armed vehicles are a huge step. if everything would be the same, fighter jets of allies would already fly over ukraine. germany not only delivers, they are actually playing the biggest role besides the us france and britain. considerinmg that germany was the enemy of them all in this century its quite a milestone now. its important that the leaders will act together. yes its russias fault and yes ukraine needs help but we have to understand that this is simular if not worse then the cold war situation.

      "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
      Just for the record: Since the outbreak of the war, the German Government has made available more than 12.5 billion euros in bilateral support for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Ukraine.
      The total value of individual licenses issued by the Federal Government for the export of military goods in the period from January 1, 2022 to January 16, 2023 amounts to 2,278,902,521 Euro.
      Last year's financial aid package for Ukraine reached over €2 billion. Work is underway to prepare the next support package.
      Germany is also the largest contributor to the refinancing fund of the European Peace Facility (EPF), which so far has enabled the provision of 3.1 billion euros to support the delivery of military equipment from EU member states to the Ukrainian armed forces.
      During the past 10 months of the war, Berlin has contributed military equipment from Bundeswehr stocks, despite the fact that this army is currently in a very dilapidated state and lacks literally everything (which is no secret).
      Due to security concerns, the Federal Government abstains from providing details. Nevertheless, we know of a few examples of military support, such as:
      • 2 air surveillance radars
      • 40 MARDER infantry fighting vehicles with ammunition
      • air defense system PATRIOT with missiles
      • 114 reconnaissance drones
      • 18 wheeled self-propelled howitzers RCH 155
      • 16 self-propelled howitzer Zuzana 2* (joint project with Denmark and Norway)
      • 90 drone detection systems
      • 26 load-handling trucks 15t
      • 7 self-propelled anti-aircraft guns GEPARD
      • 7 tracked and remote controlled infantry vehicles for support tasks
      • 6 mobile and protected mine clearing systems
      • 3 air defense system IRIS-T SLM and Iris-T SLM missiles
      • 42 mine clearing tanks and 3 mobile, remote controlled and protected mine clearing systems
      • 5 mobile reconnaissance systems (on vehicles)
      • 5 armored engineer vehicles
      • 3 heavy and medium bridge systems
      • 13 bridge-laying tanks BEAVER*
      • 20 frequency range extensions for anti-drone devices
      • 12 communications electronic scanner/jammer systems
      • 78 heavy duty trailer trucks
      • 14 truck tractor trains and 14 semi-trailers*
      • 2 tractors and 4 trailers
      • 10 protected vehicles
      • vehicle decontamination system
      • 5,032 man-portable anti-tank weapons
      • over 200 trucks
      and other vehicles, ammunition, medicine, field hospital and much more.
      This is not the end, another list is being prepared (although it remains classified within NATO). So as you can see, the Germans gave not only helmets and Leopards
      It should be stressed that the German government is also supporting all Ukraine's uniformed services (and not just the Armed Forces), this includes the supply of 195 power generators, 35 ambulances, 78 vehicles for border guards, 280 trucks, as well as minibuses, quads, fuel and the like. This list is constantly growing.
      And here are a few more, selected examples, additional activities of Germany for Ukraine (from a long list):
      • Support for Holocaust victims through the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany (one-off payments to some 10,000 people in Ukraine): €12 million in total;
      • Aid for pets from Ukraine: €5 million (animals also suffer from war);
      • Coordination of transport and assistance in the movement of Ukrainian refugees within Germany: €90 million;
      • Recognition of travel documents held by Ukrainian drivers, toll exemptions for humanitarian transports (millions more);
      • Creation of 14 positions in the Federal Prosecutor's Office to handle proceedings related to the war in Ukraine;
      • Support for the introduction of an emissions trading scheme in Ukraine: €3 million;
      • Strengthening biosecurity in Ukraine: €808,000.
      The German government's assistance to Ukraine also includes some funds provided to Ukraine's neighbors (including Moldova, Romania and the other Eastern Partnership countries) in the very broad context of the ongoing war (for example, the sum of €11.2 million in support for democratization and stabilization it this regions)
      and some financial assistance to selected Russian NGOs, which also qualifies as support for Kyiv, is another special case.
      Who can, let him give more.
      It's worth taking this into account before you start pointless criticism.

      Lol what're you talking about, Germany has been a reluctant partner to supplying weapons so much so that when the UK and US were shipping weapons before the invasion, Germany shut off their flights from their airspace and they had to travel through Denmark to get to Ukraine. Zelenskiy even called them out for it

    French Tanks, would be like British Tanks, too few in number, but the Political International Value over the Military Value, maybe more important here, for both the French and Ukraine's Governments, by French Main Battle Tanks going to Ukraine.
    With 14 British Tanks, plus 30 American Tanks, then now the French agree to sending 14 French Tanks, could give the Ukraine one very powerful International Armoured Regiment of 58 MBT's.
    With these British, American and French MBT's, being sub divided into 4 Tank Squadrons, each of three Tank Troops. Then between France, the British and Americans each supply a Battalion of Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicles - Tracked
    Around 180 AIFV-T's in total, or 60 British AIFV's and 60 American AIFV's, plus 60 French AIFV's, the Ukraine Military could form a very powerful International Armoured Mechanized Brigade, that could be a Spearhead unit for the Ukraine's against the Russian Forces
    Especially when equally supplied with more British, French and American Self-Propelled 155mm Howitzers and MLRS plus HIMAR's, as well as Self-Propelled Air Defence System too.
    Then if Germany (giving 14 Leopards Tanks at least) along with other Nato Countries, the likes of Poland, Spain, Canada, Netherlands, Belgian, Denmark, Greece, Norway, Italy, Portugal, Turkey and Hungary, plus Finland, Sweden and Austria too .
    All agreed to send Leopard MBT's, to formed two or four Armoured Regiments, around 200 Leopard Tanks, again with more AIFV-T's, to create two more Armoured Mechanized Brigades, again with more Self-Propelled 155mm Howitzers and MLRS plus HIMAR's, as well as Self-Propelled Air Defence System too.
    This would give Ukraine Government and Military, a whole Armoured Mechanized Division, with around 260 MBT's and 540 AIFV-T's, to attack the Russian Forces in Ukraine, which would be a major problem for Putin's Soviet Regime.
    Though if Western International Allies, who have Leopard Tanks, like Australia, Brazil, Singapore, Chile, Indonesia and Qatar, can donate some of their own Leopard Tanks to Ukraine, maybe enough to create another Armoured Regiment or a whole Armoured Brigade of 180 Leopard Tanks too?
    with the possibility within a year, Ukraine could be given or supplied, over or nearly 300 Leopard MBT's, plus around another 100 MBT's coming from the American's, British and French now too.
    400 Western Tanks, fighting against mostly out of date Russian Tanks, from the 1950's and 1960's, or 1970's and 1980's, with fewer 1990's early 2000's Russian Tanks too, any tank battles in Ukraine could be very one sided, because the Russians cannot supply either Close Air Support for its own ground forces, neither can the Russian Air Force have Air Superiority over all of Ukrainian Air Space too.
    So Russian tanks and IFV's plus ground forces, will be wide open to Ukraine fighters and drone attacks too!
    If Putin's Soviet Regime, if they knew what was go for it now, they would or should be asking for or calling for International Peace Talks sooner rather than latter!
    Though that would mean Putin's Soviet Regime losing Political Face, both internationally and more importantly at home in Russia, so Putin would lose power in the process too!
    So Putin's Soviet Regime, are threatening the West with Nukes again, like some school playing group bully, who only has empty threats left to try and get his way!

    I fail to see the logic behind the argument that Germany is reluctant to send tanks to Ukraine, because they committed atrocities there in the past. It would seem to me that sending tanks, and not only tanks, but all kinds of other weapons would be a way to atone for those crimes, of which Ukraine suffered the most then, and for indirectly inflicting on Ukraine another round of such atrocities by hands of the regime that Germany had nurtured.

    • Coma White

      You fail to see it because you fail to understand their position. It wasn't a reluctance to send tanks to Ukraine like you cite. It was a reluctance for unilaterally sending them. It was clearly stated this was the only hold up.

    A couple hundred western tanks without combined arms and air superiority will make very little difference in Ukraine. Who owns the sky in Ukraine? Russia. Furthermore, it will take at least six months to train Ukrainian crews to use and maintain these tanks. The M1's and Challenger are strictly for show. The Ukrainians need a common platform for training, maintenance, and spare parts. The Leopard makes sense, but on this massive battlefield where Ukraine has already lost over 150,000 dead, a few tank battalions will make no real difference.

    Problem is the quantity... 14 tanks from Germany and another 14 from Poland wouldn't change anything.
    Also they are the 2a4 variant (not the new 2a7) which is subpar compared to current variant of the T72.

    • Stefan Henning

      Germany will be sending more, this is a first delivery. Other countries will chip it gradually also...

    • FoolHD
      FoolHD 4 months ago +1

      Germany delivers their 2A6 variant, they actually don't have any 2A4 in active duty anymore. But yeah, sadly you're right about the other countries...so many were crying that ukraine needs modern tanks and bashing and trashtalking about germany (yeah, i look at poland) to make way for their tank deliveries. And what now? Suddenly you only hear of a few countries that are actually ready to give away a few tanks and in the most cases only the old 2A4 variants.

    • The Countess
      The Countess 4 months ago +1

      Some reports (including from Der Spiegel) talk about Germany suppling the 2a6 variant. which, while is not the latest, but is a much improved version over the 2a4's.
      The guardian says Finland Spain and the Netherlands will also deliver 2a6's, while a second tank battalion of 2a4's will be supplied by Poland and Norway.
      As for the 'current variant of the T72', Russia doesn't have a lot of those either. most are the early model T72, which the 2a4 can handle.
      But even then, tank on tank engagement have been pretty rare during the war, so isn't even that important.

      Just gonna paste what I answered another person ^^
      through Germanys involvement. It was, and still is, a big debate in which most people where neither for, nor against it. It may seem to other countries as decision where the answer is already clear, but that’s not the case for Germany. Also our political culture played a huge part in the way we handled this “issue”. The same way other political cultures if other countries played a huge part in their opinion in this matter.
      And also as a young German citizen I can say, that our history is definitely important to us and it’s one of the reasons why Germany often tries to negotiate first and wants to take the most peaceful way, but it’s definitely not the only reason. Nowadays modern circumstances have more influence then our terrible past.
      I hope that I was able to explain my point of view clearly, despite my poor English. I just wanted to give an insight in the German perception of this debate, as I felt that I wasn’t probably displayed in the BBC report.
      I would appreciate it, if the world could have a more dimensional view of Germany and maybe one day not only see it as it’s terrible past, which definitely shouldn’t be forgotten, but as a modern country, which learned positively from their past. That is my hope for Germany and I hope we’re on a good way :)
      Btw. I hope I’ve been clear, but I’m not saying who’s right and who’s wrong. I’m just saying it’s complicated ^^

      • Support for Holocaust victims through the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany (one-off payments to some 10,000 people in Ukraine): €12 million in total;
      • Aid for pets from Ukraine: €5 million (animals also suffer from war);
      • Coordination of transport and assistance in the movement of Ukrainian refugees within Germany: €90 million;
      • Recognition of travel documents held by Ukrainian drivers, toll exemptions for humanitarian transports (millions more);
      • Creation of 14 positions in the Federal Prosecutor's Office to handle proceedings related to the war in Ukraine;
      • Support for the introduction of an emissions trading scheme in Ukraine: €3 million;

      • Support for Holocaust victims through the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany (one-off payments to some 10,000 people in Ukraine): €12 million in total;
      • Aid for pets from Ukraine: €5 million (animals also suffer from war);
      • Coordination of transport and assistance in the movement of Ukrainian refugees within Germany: €90 million;
      • Recognition of travel documents held by Ukrainian drivers, toll exemptions for humanitarian transports (millions more);
      • Creation of 14 positions in the Federal Prosecutor's Office to handle proceedings related to the war in Ukraine;
      • Support for the introduction of an emissions trading scheme in Ukraine: €3 million;

    22 years ago, NATO bombed our city of Belgrade. NATO killed 5,783,000 civilians, including 437 children burned alive by banned bombs. No one is punished. And we were bombed. By country, the number of aircraft involved was as follows at the beginning of April 1999: 250 aircraft from the USA, 40 from France, 16 each from Germany and the Netherlands, 10 from Belgium, 9 from Great Britain, 8 from Norway, 6 from Canada, 4 each from Turkey, Spain and Denmark, 3 - Portugal[66]. In addition, 42 Italian aircraft were involved, and later the number of American aircraft increased to 480, British to 28, French to 81. Find all the pilots and punish them.

      @Jonathan J Poland gave 72 modern Krab self-propelled howitzers (SPHs), for example. In addition to 310 older T-72 and PT-91, 300 older IFVs, and more. Here is the more complete list:
      clip-share.net/video/Rsf19dCr4ck/video.html
      Krabs are doing much better in Ukraine then German PHZ 2000s. PHZ 2000 breaks down after 1 month of heavy use, Krab can last several times longer. Also it takes long time for Germans to repair PHZ 2000.
      1 Krab costs $18,5 million (PHZ 2000 costs also $18,5 million). Plus there were much more Krabs (72 pieces) sent to Ukraine than PHZ 2000s (22 pieces). Germany is planning to sent more their SPHs, but it will take long time.
      And at this point the value of delivered help in $ might be higher and Germany will be on 3rd place.
      In fact, based on the size and richness of the country, Germans should be on 2nd place after US, but for now Germans are on 4th place.
      GPD (2022) for Germany is $4,062,790M, and Poland is $679,067M. German's GPD is 6x bigger, so their help should be also 6x bigger.
      Germans needs to speed-up their help several times.
      Poland in addition to Krabs is sending also other modern equipment: dron sets FlyEye and WarMate, manpads Piorun.

      Jonathan J 4 months ago

      @Robert AB I've no reason to dispute any of what you say, but you know I didn't mention either Germany or Poland in my comment?
      It was solely about how much equipment the Ukranians had managed to take from the russians.

    • Robert AB
      Robert AB 4 months ago +1

      @Jonathan JYeah, this Moscovian / Muscovite (= russian) input was huge in fact, but they are more careful now so this river is dry now.
      Ukrainians got up to 500 tanks and also big number of IFVs, but who knows how many of them are operable (many of these pieces where damaged).
      Poland gave Ukraine 310 operable tanks, big fraction of them with new engines, better optics, night vision and other improvements. And in total will be approx. 480 tanks (Poland is planning to give all Soviet area tanks soon). There is also problem with Soviet-area tanks: the lack of parts and not enough ammunition.
      Poland promised now 14 Leopards, but is planning to give Ukraine all 247 Leopards.
      In the meantime, Polish Army is buying 350 Abrams tanks, 1000 Korean K2 tanks, ~800 SPHs (Krabs, and Korean K9), several hundred MLRS (200 Patriots and 300 Korean MLRS), other air defense systems and more.
      It is possible that some of this equipment (especially K2, Krabs, K9) could also be send to Ukraine if needed.
      So looks like Muscovites will be 2nd in place after Poland :)
      As a Pole I am frustrated with German's response. They should really give at least 1/4 of this what US is giving (DE population: 83 mln, US population: 332 mln).
