Thank you for making the distinction between the developers and the publishers, so many people love to blame the devs who pull 16 hour days and miss their child’s first words or first steps to get these products to us and even then when it’s not enough they do the same thing for another few months to get it fixed and finished. Cyberpunk is in my top 3 games ever and I still see the dev team getting so much hate online for how the release happened, but it’s all on the shoulders of investors and executives. Remember guys, we speak with our wallets not our words.

To add to Jake's point, I think the issue got worse when Open World games became commonplace. Instead of scaling the bug checking and QA to the larger size of the game's worlds, they kept the same development times and release windows to appease stockholders, which led to crunch as an industry standard, and corporate greed as an acceptable reason to release broken games to make money NOW and fix problems later. (If ever.)

Jakey I really recommend watching (at least the first few episodes) Double Fine Psychodyssey. I think it's going to give you a good amount of insight into how/why a big game goes wrong the way that it does. especially ones that don't take the Sony approach and try to go off the beaten path.
incredible video though, also Jakey and Jakey were amazing, Jakey though was a bit nervous and looked like he wanted to shit his little pissboy pants, not nearly as good as the other two.

I think what is continuing to create this divide between consumers and the people that make them is that, as you said, game development is hard. I currently work in AAA games as an artist, and the difference between what I and the people around me do, and what consumers think we do, is night and day.
I remember watching the making of documentary for Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and the devs were talking about how in CoD4, a mission might have about 150 lines of code overall, where in MW2, they had roughly 1000-1500, just an order of magnitude in terms of complexity.
That's the nature of game dev, we need more moving parts, and how those moving parts interact with the other moving parts can sometimes behave in strange and weird ways, and not everything will work as you expect it to, even from an art side. It's even harder when you have publishers down your neck expecting you to work harder than you possibly can. So yeah, I guess give devs a bit of a break, and give publishers more of a hard time.
