    In Theaters June 24
The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.
Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.
Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
The film’s screenplay is by Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise), based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. The film is produced by Derrickson & Cargill’s Crooked Highway and presented by Universal and Blumhouse. Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are producers on the film, which is executive produced by Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner.

Decent movie for a three minute runtime. Apparently there'll be an extended version in cinemas, too. Not sure what else they could add, though.

Ethan Hawke and the child actors really raised the film to a higher level, especially the sister knocked it out of the park. One point in the film I really didn't know whether she was getting beat up for real by her dad or whether it was acting, because that was some of the most realistic crying I have ever seen.

I just went to the theater to see it about 4 hours ago and it was amazing. The child actors were literally amazing and sometimes I couldn’t even tell they were acting. The thriller was filled with a lot of suspense which made it very interesting to watch. Overall, the movie was great and I really enjoyed it

Something about this is touching. The scene where the boy is practicing hitting with the phone and the ghost is there with him was pretty cool, but for some reason the idea that these kids were there to walk him through and help him succeed where they failed really hit hard. It was like they were his guardian angels.

One of the best horror-thriller with an emotional touch.
This movie is quite unique cuz it's horror-thriller where there are both a serial killer and ghosts.
I like how the story isn't just about making people scared or feeling goosebumps but it also has character development and a family story which you can relate to.
There are several touching moments which makes the movie stand out from the rest of this genre.
Also love the performances by both the siblings actors.
I swear once you get to the part where the boy is kidnapped, you'll be hooked to your seat.

It made me learn that there are reprocussions to dumb things that you've done. I had a PERFECT childhood. This film was the best horror, suspense film I have seen in quite some time. I like how they didn't give Ethan Hawke's character The Grabber any backstory so you wonder why he did what he did. I imagine he was abused by his father in the same basement and his name was Johnny because he called Finny "Johnny" when he first put Finny in the basement. The young actors in this brilliant film were the standouts. Mason Thames who plays Finney reminds of of a combination of a young Tom Holland, a young Heath Ledger and a young River Phoenix. Thames has the good looks, stoic charm and acting skills that will take him places in the future. Madeleine Mcgraw who plays Gwen reminds me of a young Angelina Jolie with her combination of grace, strength and dramatic acting skills that will take her places in the future. I wish them both much happiness and success.

I just took my 2 teenage sons to watch this. I have to admit, I only knew a VERY basic premise. Never watched the trailer. I quite enjoyed it. Teared up at the end because I’m a boy mom and even the thought of it all upset me. But, all 3 of us enjoyed it. Ethan Hawke did awesome as a villain. And all the child actors were amazing. Definitely kept me on edge and finally had to cover my mouth so I didn’t yell out when certain things happened. 🤣

Eery, creepy, scary, emotional, happy, sad, 70s 80s nostalgic, very deep psychological thriller horror movie unlike any other. Lot of good ones but wow this is one of a kind.

Saw this last night and loved it. The only thing I’ll say is that I was expecting it to be more graphic or gruesome. And I was hoping there was more to it than what’s in the trailer. But the trailer legit is the whole movie. LoL

Just watched the movie today and it was definitely better than the trailer. I still can't get over how good it was. It had a unique storyline that will make you sad, giddy, and happy. Awesome, I'd be able to recommend it to a friend without being embarrassed about my recommendation.

@Black Powerpuff T2 was in the 90s and the trailer gave away one of the main twists of the film (that the Arnie terminator was now a good guy) lol. It was meant to be a suspenseful moment when he shows up and a big shocking reveal when he saves John Connor given he was a bad guy in the first movie. So it happened even back then, just arguably less frequently.

@The Darkness Underneath Podcast John Wayne Gacy actually inspired the short story the movie was based on, it’s also why in the short story he cited the serial killer as a clown and it was then changed in the movie to a magician because they wanted to avoid it being compared to IT

    • The Darkness Underneath Podcast
The Darkness Underneath Podcast 5 months ago

It isn't It unless you think there just being a child killer is It or basic shit that is horror themed. In that case you should add John Wayne Gacy movies/docs in there. They are also like It and prob knock offs.

Ethan Hawk was amazing and the child actors were too especially the one who played Finn's sister!

If I was personally charge of making this trailer, I would have kept the concept of the kids behind the phone out of the trailer. The main kid getting kidnapped by a magician with a girl getting dreams to help him is already an idea that captures attention. The kids behind the phone could have been a neat twist.
