In WoT the elves (Aelfinn and Eelfinn) are evil, cunning, devious snake- and foxlike people.
The word elves is found throughout the Germanic languages and originally meant 'white folks.' "Ljósálfar eru fegri en sól sýnum" = The (white) lightelves face's are more beautiful than the sun." The white lightelves in the norse/nordic Snorra-Edda are subordinates of the Asen(gods) in the heavenly realm.

@Carla Hallabrin lol true to source material? Wanton and unnecessary change to the background story of matt and perrin which will definitely change their character arc, change to the role of white cloaks, change to the power dynamics of the story world, implying dragon reborn can be female, when it is the male taint that makes the dragon reborn so dangerous? And the implied changes to the be power. Using a bland made up town instead of using one of the actual city they travel to, even if they do need to cut short the three city jaunt to one...
The list of mindless changes goes on and you want to claim that they are faithful to the source?
Idiocy needs to know some limit.

I love the theme for this trailer music. Spot on!👌👍 And even though I’ve heard it wasn’t too relevant to the books, I still enjoyed it immensely! Can’t wait for the next season! (If there is a next one.)

All I know for certain is that I’m uncertain about this. The Eye of the World is one of the greatest books I have ever experienced, and because i have such a deep appreciation for it, it may be impossible for a television series to get it just right. There’s just so many things that could go wrong with it. I am incredibly cynical regarding adaptations of such beloved books. Fingers crossed, I guess!

    • elilla331
      elilla331 5 months ago +3

@Gleeker Chances are you'll enjoy the books more than the TV series. There's more depth, things are explained, because of how verbose Jordan was in all of his writing(that includes his Conan The Destroyer books which are also worth reading), it limited how much retconning can happen as well leading to smoother continuity between books. As a far warning, some of the books are a slog because they fill-in important side story content that ties up to the end of the series.

    • Gleeker

The score in this trailer is phenomenal! I saw a few inconsistencies too, but I still tell everyone to read (or honestly listen to it on Audible, that’s the best since the narrators really nail the characters personalities) first. Unless each episode is 3 hours long and there are 13 seasons, they will still fall well short of the breathtaking scope and depth of the story.

    • csquared
      csquared 6 months ago +3

@Daniel Hunt That detail may be a bit tedious to read, but it is probably enormously helpful to the people who are setting up the sets for this series, in terms of allowing them create a world of scope and vitality. Instead of happening to invent a lot of details to 'flesh out' the world, they can simply draw from the source material.

@J R.C. Not saying it was all bad, some of the camp intrigue was actually ok. But the length of it was abominable. Just do a cut back and say his beard had grown 5 more inches to signify the time he had been trailing the army would have been fine with me.

    • Stanley Myrick
      Stanley Myrick 7 months ago

@J R.C. Has he scratched his beard again or worried about his woman. Has his woman flirted with the enemy again? Have they feared to lose the trail of an army again and decided to just follow it? And those were the highlights.

    • Stanley Myrick
      Stanley Myrick 7 months ago

@J R.C. I liked Perrin until that storyline. It was nearly all cringe. I hated it so much. If I wasn't so invested in the series by the time it came along, I'd have stopped reading with no regrets.

    • J R.C.
      J R.C. 7 months ago +1

@Stanley Myrick Perin's Shaido storyline takes soooooo long it spans like 4 - 5 books and Mat / Tuon does barely anything but talk in the following book after finally meeting after waiting so long for it to happen. Crossroads of Twilight was a bit of a trip in how it was just a full length prologue

@Odin Siuan mentioned something about a five-headed dragon of legend in the show, and though they were not talking about THE Dragon, I have a feeling they’re alluding to the Emond’s Field Five all being the Dragon Reborn (like his soul split into all five of them, despite Nynaeve being years older than them).

    • Odin
      Odin 5 months ago +1

@Martine Shamzin Its not possible to tell the story with Egwene being the dragon. The only change thats going to be possible is having Nynaeve and Rand as a "joined" dragon because thats basically what they are (all of Rands greatest feats is done with Nynaeves help). Although I really hope they don't do that, it would lesser Nynaeves part of the story if she's "the chosen one" and forced by fate.

I think the book series is one of the best fantasy novels there is. Reading it for the first time when I was 12 years old in the 90s. I find it quiet embarassing not even mentioning Robert Jordan's name in the Teaser!!! A Shame! 🤷‍♂️

    • Tim Borna
      Tim Borna 6 months ago

Same here, also started reading these as a 12 year old in the 90s. Literally grew up with the story, and honestly, even though I read it all twice, I never read the last book. I sort of dont want it to end :D I sure hope and think Robert Jordan will get his cred.

@Man with No Name I mean Tolkien's characters are more iconic partially cause they've been around 30 to 40 years longer and had a blockbuster film adaptation lol.

    • Man with No Name
Man with No Name 6 months ago +1

@Sam well at least Tolkien never wrote something as abysmal as Crossroads of Twilight lol. But in all seriousness, Tolkien's characters were never the focal point of the series, LOTR shines best in the worldbuilding and storytelling. While Jordan's character writing is perhaps superior, Tolkien's characters are more iconic and to compare both series as a whole, LOTR is better.

@LBDS95 true, i gave up after book 7 because of the women. not all of them, i actually like moiraine a lot and she was one of my favorite characters. but nyaneve, egwaine, and to a lesser extent elaine were trash. i heard they get better towards the end, and they dont start off too bad, but boy does it get bad in the middle
i restarted the series via audiobooks, and theyre still tolerable in book 3, so i cant remember when they get super bad

@Suave Karl Marx It's not about the multiculturalism, man. Everyone loves the differences in the races and countries in the book, it's what makes the Saldeans just as interesting as the Sea Folk or the Tinkers. I just hate when they diversify the cast for representation's sake. There are plenty of roles to be filled by other people, but I don't remember Egwene being aboriginal (check out the Great Hunt cover art, she's basically porcelain) or Siuan having an afro. Eamon Valda is described plenty of times as an old, white man with skin like leather. Not a good looking middle aged black man. And before you start calling me names, save your breath. I'm not racist, or any other things on what I can only imagine would be a long list when you have a name with Karl Marx in it. If they're already straying so far from the source material in the books as evidenced by the cast, why should I think the show will be any more faithful to any other aspects of the books? They've already decided to not even follow the most basic aspects that Robert Jordan created - the character descriptions!
Also, why would you bring politics into this just to be divisive? Clearly you and I wouldn't agree on almost anything, but we both loved the books (which is the main reason I dislike them instantly changing all the character designs for no reason, certainly not anything that advances the plot) so why start a fight when we all came together over a common interest? Your life doesn't need to revolve around looking down your nose at half the population based on political stances.

@Nathan Why do I keep seeing this nonsense? The Wheel of Time started coming out in the 90s, not the 20s. Female character growth, prominent female roles, and female-led stories were very, very common in fantasy LONG before The Wheel of Time. I have nothing against this series, but it's so incredibly cringe-worthy how much its fanbase repeatedly makes the most ridiculously exaggerated claims about it. You can love and praise a series without lying/massively exaggerating its impact.
That being said, countless people actually give up on these books because of how insufferable, petty, and obnoxious practically ALL of the female characters are anyway. Of all the women I've read in fantasy, The Wheel of Time EASILY has the worst. It's not even close.

@mike bannwart Yeah, I was really disappointed with all the changes they made once I started watching it. Couldn't even finish the series. • mike bannwart
mike bannwart 2 months ago +1

actually that might have been a bad thing. since the show has very little to do with the book. The dragon was never considered a hyrda. Morraine went to the two rivers because of clues but didnt know what she would find their. plus all of the other little things they got wrong and all the things they added that screws up later seasons/books. just yeah. Books are great but they could have done it correctly but choose not too

They have such gems as "every man should have a girl assigned to them by the state".

I would absolutely love to see Dumai’s Wells depicted on screen. I do not wish to spoil that part of the story for anyone who is not familiar with the books, but if the series reaches that point in the story and does those scenes justice, that would truly be a horrific spectacle to behold

    • Nelson
      Nelson 7 months ago +1

@Lee C The producers need to be very careful with this scene. It can't be added to the show as part of an action scene just for blood and gore's sake without tying it up in the context of the Three Oath, otherwise, it won't look and feel right. Also, If they follow the book exactly as described on this chapter and adapt it on screen, it could potentially land them in a legal hot water, given the nature of this scene. So as much as I opposed changing anything to suit an adaptation, this one definitely need to be change, somehow, without changing its intended effect. I'm sure the producers and the screenwriters are aware of this. It will be interesting how they will spin this for the small screen and keep it true to the source.

    • Lee C
      Lee C 7 months ago +1

@Nelson I agree with you that I’m not sure they will depict it in the same way on screen. For me, it resonated so much because it was such a monumental ‘visual’ example of why the Aes Sedai oath to never use the One Power as a weapon was written in to The Three Oaths. Up until then the oath had been mentioned a number of times, but words can never really express so well as the eyes can see. (I realise that’s a little ironic considering we are talking about a book!) I am not a fan of gratuitous blood and gore, but when it is there to make such a chilling point as this, I think they should keep it. Because of this, I feel the show would be weaker for not portraying this in a similar way. It’s only once you experience this moment as a reader that you realise their world is never going to be the same again.

I was in the subway train reading that chapter and I nearly throw up. People were looking at me funny. The undescribeable level of barbarism and brutality...smh. I don't know if they can show that on TV to do it justice, or show that at all. As someone commented, The battle of Dumai's Wells make the Red Wedding in A Song of ICE and FIRE series (or GOT, to those who didn't read the series but watched the TV show) looks like a kiddy party. I think it's very unlikely that a streaming series ever makes it to 12 seasons. That's rare even for syndicated shows. Streaming shows don't capture the zeitgeist the same way that network shows can, so 4 or 5 is probably what we'll get if we're lucky. Expect DEEP cuts.

Don't listen to them...6' 2 doesn't equal BIG. Tall is not the same as big.
Lan was HUGE in the books. Both in size AND in stature. He literally destroys the strongest Forsaken in a one on one sword fight.
And for the record...the casting of Captain America was terrible...size wise. No matter how "big" they tried to make him appear. Stature and presence are equally important.
The Rock... for example...has both. A big presence AND a big physique.

@Shawn Gilbert Its really hard to know what that term means these days, my point was that the books are fundamentally about balance between the genders. The books in my opinion show that people are people regardless of race or color and some will be on your side, some will have different ideas or goals. I may not have the perfect definition for "woke" but to me these books deal with exactly the things that that term should mean.

  • Beta Cross

So far with the 3 eps released, I like that cgi doesnt look cheap. There are zoom out shots showing the vastness and scenery. Costumes are nice. Things i dont like 1. I dont know if the trollocs dont take hostages or prisoners but the leverage was in the village they left- their families, was totally ignored. 2.) Yey lets camp inside a cursed city with a very easy to find exit. I want a darker musical scoring. So far I somehow felt that this series is for kids a bit childish like the feeling i got when I watched Eragon back in the day. The dark ones army is not scary. The scary villain is the whitecloak collecting rings. This was so hype so cant help it but compare it to GOT. Hope it gets better. They say it was a mis cast because of forced diversity being pushed by the show runners rather than being true to the book. I would still give this a chance.i think it will get better with the politics of humans. I want a cersei level villain. Cunning and ruthless. Hope there is one outthere.

    • balbux97
      balbux97 5 months ago +1

People sees non white caucasian actors in a series and automatically says that is a forced cast. Don't hear them. In the first book (which I have read recently) it's not said how their skins colour is (or at least I don't remember), but in one scene when rand and mat are travelling alone it says that for first time they saw a blonde hair colour in a person. So, that their hair is non blonde seems pretty accurate.
I can't argue the rest because I've read at least what has happened for now in the series and my view of point is different because of that. But for me, the dark army is pretty scary.
Sorry if I've done mistakes. I'm not a native English speaker

@Chelouha Yeah I'm not sure those details are all that important. She has presence, gravitas, authority and grace. She should look older, at least in the sense of having the bearing of a person who is fundamentally an unstoppable force. I'm the opposite. GoT basically killed the book series (GRRM celebritydom, moving past the books etc), Expanse messed up most of the characters from their book versions, American Gods was like a poor derivative of the full cast audiobook that was meticulously put together by Gaiman. Many other examples of similar. I think these adaptions are for $$ from people who don't like reading.

@StuntDummy a gynocentric culture does not necessarily mean 'woke'. The many pros and cons of the societal order (particularly the aes sedai) are replete throughout the series as well as the many character flaws of the female protagonists, at least to me that just makes for an interesting setting. And as much as the woke crowd might want to claim it, they still have to cry foul to how a man is the one that saves the day. It's probably why Rand is practically nonexistent in this trailer.

@Aylix to be honest, WOT has always been pretty woke so there won’t be any disappointment there. I’m just hoping that it does the books justice.

@agapp11able even if it’s not politically motivated and is true to the story lots of people won’t watch it because they’re turned off by anything that even looks remotely politically motivated. Entertainment has been brutally fake and ugly lately so you can’t blame anyone for taking a glance at this trailer and saying “hell no not again.”

@Nostradumbass this. Its like randonly putting in black people in the witcher where they dont belong.
Before anyone freaks out - Black people are Sharans in the story. They appear later, but nope gotta have them in right from the beginning 🤦‍♂️

    • Nostradumbass
      Nostradumbass 8 months ago +3

@kasper mygenfordt Anything is adaptable if done properly i just dont believe a director currently exists who would do the source material proper justice, all people care about now are a few cool CGI scenes and a few quotable lines, all this does is alienate a portion of the original fanbase... don't even get me started on the forced diversity...

    • kasper mygenfordt
kasper mygenfordt 8 months ago +1

@Nostradumbass but then again, if you've read dune, too much like the book can be quite dull and once you remove a single character you must change many things or do you simply propose WOT is unadaptable

    • Nostradumbass
      Nostradumbass 8 months ago +2

i have read all the books multiple times and i see many moments in this trailer that dont exist in the books... never trust live action remakes too meet expectations if you love the original content.

Wheel of Time, Dune, and Foundation in 2021. What a treat for millennials and Gen X. Dune was good and WoT had better be! It's amazing how many beloved quotes (just look at these comments!) have come from WoT and Dune - novels really don't have this sort of quotational impact any more.

    • T T
      T T 6 months ago

Foundation starts mostly on track and quickly vears right into "I'm a better writer than this beloved age old classic that I'm supposed to be putting on screen" and turns right into boring garbage.
I can't stand these network people that butcher one good story after another on screen, it's tiresome.

This will probably be better than the books. They'll cut a lot of the endless side plot rubbish and padding the author did to make more money.

You should read the books (no really, I've just finished EOTW recently (in the middle of TGH atm) and it's one of the best books I've ever read). You will seriously not regret it! This TV series looks pretty good too, and I have high hopes, but it saddens me now that there can be people on this earth who have NEVER read these books.

@Michael Nwazue lol you didn't read all the books if you think the shawls are minor. There was an entire arch about the divided factions not leaving their wing of the tower without their shawls.

    • Michael Nwazue
      Michael Nwazue 8 months ago

@Topaz Nora such a minor point to whine over, and in a visual medium where there is no narrating voice to remind the reader of a particular women's ajah, it makes more sense for the full body decoration

I started writing down all the things from game of thrones that were directly taken from this series. I there's about 30 things- like game of thrones is called the game of houses here. I had no idea they were making a show. Exciting. George R.R said he was influenced by wheel of time more than anyone.

Wow. I've been listening to this series on audible and I'm in the eighth book. I am obsessed. I just finished book 7 and I thought what the hell I'll see if there's any talk of a series coming out in the next couple of years or maybe they'll at least be talking to the author. I do a search and a goddamn series is going to drop in like two months. This is just fantastic.
Excited to finish the series in the next month and then watch it on TV.
