Learning to build clone pedals, I was able to try just about every overdrive/distortion I was intrested in. This includes LPD sixty8, Plexiblend, Plexitone, Plexidrive, Morning Glory, Lightspeed, Prince of Tone, Animal and a few others. All things considered, I found this pedal to be my favorite and most versitile and my search is over. I have since purchased the real one to support JHS and havent looked back. If you are looking for a pedal to be your second and third channel on a dead clean amp (Fender) you should give this one a try.
great tones and great demo!! love the way the pedal responds to the volume knob!
I used to own an AT+. Great pedal, but it worked better with my Fender Bassbreaker than it did with the Marshall I replaced it with. The AT+ is one of the best Marshall in a box pedals out there, but through a Marshall it can be a bit too much. If you want to make a Fender or HiWatt sound more like a hot rodded Marshall, it's amazing.
Nice tones out of this pedal, very much amp-like. I have the BB At too, but it’s too midrangy and compressed for my taste as long as overdrive is concerned, and I like the standard BB a lot more.
Love the AT+. The way it cleans up is ridiculous. I don't have to worry much about remembering to turn off the pedal. Just turn the volume down and switch to a single coil pup on the neck and I'm set. And the halo is just amazing. The hold function on it is pretty fun.
Very good demo. That tone is gorgeous.
The production on this set is amazing.
Your knowledge has changed my life!!!!!
😎
Nice job my dude! You are getting those AT tones spot on! I need a Keeley Halo lol!
Totally awesome sounds!
2 questions please:
1.)Are you using 500k volume and tone pots?
2.)Are you using a treble bleed on the volume pot, and if so, what values and series or parallel? Thanks
@Chris Schneider can you share the specs, please?
@Tran Bros Awesome, thank you so much. Building an Andy Timmons Strat myself and will follow your config. Many thanks!!!!
This video, alone, did it for me. Subscribed! Great review!
Amp in a box type pedal , my favorite pedal is still the tone concepts distillery pedal it’s the only pedal that’s stayed .
I have one and I love it. Great video, subbed. Cheers!
GREAT PLAYING AND DEMO!
Have you played the JHS Angry Charley? I'm curious how different is the AT signature to the Angry Charley, other than the boost.
They’re very similar. Some prefer the regular AT or Angry Charlie because it’s easier to step on the single switch.
I retuned mine. It’s good for solos and leads. But I felt for Rhythm the bottom end was too right, scooped low mids and pushed upper highs and mids. I contacted JHS and it is what it is. I ended up replacing it with a Dirty Little Secret MK3. That’s way much better for me! Don’t get me wrong great pedal here! But the bottom end was too tight, and it was so mid focused… it made my Tone King too centered, lower spectrum gone. Sounded my like a 10in speaker Vs a 12in. For the cost I returned it, otherwise may have found a home for solos only. Also didn’t stack well for me, as it transforms your amp. It’s like a touring backline amp type pedal to me. Show up and plug in to whatever amp and you’ll get that sound. If you are a Andy or Vai fan that plays lots of solos…you’ll love it!
But it didn’t chug great, and going from say a Morning Glory to this it would just fold up a bit and get too mid focused. So great pedal for that lead tone. But not for a main Rhythm imo. The DLS3 works better as my main distortion, but the @ def has more sustain for solos. Not enough oomph though for low E sustain for me.
@dezertson2011 this was my experience, as well with the boost. It was a bit weak of a boost I felt. It worked better on 100% boost side engaged first, then going full on distortion. So it worked better backwards for me when I had it. I also had a ts808 behind the pedal, and it didn’t mesh well. The pedal really seems to be niche and it’s own amp in a box to plug into any amp. Like you found out, unless your mainly doing solos or focusing on the Andy or Vai type lead riff playing…it’s a bit hard to use for stacking or Rhythm.
The Dirty Little Secret pedal for me was the best out the bunch after testing many MIAB type pedals. Not as much gain as some would like…but nails the 70s sounds as well as Green Day(they use same amp), Black Keys and all that stuff. If I want more distortion I run a Morning Glory or TS808 behind it for leads. The Angry Charlie if people want to stick with JHS, is a better idea for every day players. However not sure where the bass EQ is or raises…but I’m guessing it has more low end, work better with rhythm and would be fine running a Tubescreamer with it.
The @ is just way more tailored and specific than I thought! They should def advertise this! As all the Clip-Share stuff lead me to believe it’s the best Mesa/Marshall in a box pedal to end all. It is if you like to play leads, with tons of sustain. But the built in boost does not have enough gain on tap..and the thinning sound is probably because that’s what TS pedals do to Bass. It doesn’t help the pedal already lacks low end.
I think they should of left more low end on the main side, and let the TS boost side do the low cutting solo stuff. That’s traditionally how a Tubescreamer works cutting bass and being mid focused. But if you play lead 99% of time I think buying the normal @ would be more cost effective. I loved the gain and 100w/18v setting! Just it had its draw backs as we both mentioned. Should of let the boost side cut the bass, and the main have more low end. Because of its design it feels like a super tight bass to a way to thinned out focused tube screamer sound. Which is fine…but as I said it doesn’t help the main pedal is tight and lacking on the bottom to begin with. A more friendlier version woukd be to have a tight bass toggle knob. Then I think the boost would kick in better. The pedal itself doesn’t even need the extra boost imo given how it’s voiced already!
I returned mine as well. The boost side sounds incredibly different from the drive side and you can’t put any boost pedals in front of it or it malfunctions. I contacted Andy in his Instagram channel and he told me “Yes, I never put anything in front of it. That’s not a good idea.” If you aren’t using it exactly like Andy does, it’s not versatile enough.
I own a Fender DR 64 hardwired and this pedal just doesn't play well with it because it's such an "amp in the box" type pedal. I also have a Dr. Z Maz 38 EL84 style amp and it works better. However, the pedal IS YOUR SOUND. It pretty much takes over. I own it but rarely use it.
Congratulations for you very good Andy's tone . I like it
Like it.hope it's not like the ice tea or any Charlie brown.which in those the compressed cb sound overrides everything.this sounds good.
God bless you for using humbuckers for this review. Sometimes I forget that pedal reviewers don't even know what a humbucker pickup is whatsoever!
This x1000! I've been trying to find some demos of how dirty a King of Tone can really get and gave up because of all the SSS strats, deluxe reverbs, and cargo shorts
Dude your channel is awesome! Subbed!
The Halo just takes it to the next level
Have one love it
Great Demo
