Many years ago, I was talking to a stranger in my local pub in Surbiton. He was a tank soldier although I'm not sure what his duty was. He showed me something like a warrant as proof of his military status. He was also quite a decent and level headed guy. He'd served during Desert Storm. His account of the confrontation between I think T62s and Chieftain tanks was quite blunt. I quote. "It was a turkey shoot. We were literally blowing the turrets clean off the platforms". I remember him saying that some sort of uranium projectile was involved. If, and it's a big if, that Ukraine manages to obtain these types of weapons this year , and the correct training installed, it could be a game changer. But I doubt that Putin is going to let that happen without some serious consequences be it military or civilian.

Probably meant depleted uranium munitions. From what I gathered those munitions have a much higher hardness and a higher kinetic impact. They are not "nuclear" weapons in any way since they are made of depleted uranium. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depleted_uranium

The suffering of civilians continues unabated as a result of the shelling, while the military situation in Donbas deteriorates. Putin is focusing the majority of his forces on this cause, with the Kremlin's strategy bearing similarities to that of terrorists.

This is the thing for me. It's not just the fight that Ukranian soldiers have put up, it's that the Ukranian generals seems to be smarter than Russia's. Basically at every turn they've made the exact right moves, including so many that were unexpected but ultimately correct.

@Slashley gibbins I don't know how much 'advice' they will be getting; I think western-sourced intel is probably the most valuable thing Nato & coalition can provide (other than weapons and ammo of course).

The main problem of depleted uranium is the inhalation of its dust formed during the destruction of shells. An impact or explosion produces uranium oxide, which could theoretically contaminate the area or be inhaled into the human respiratory tract, posing a risk of health hazards.
The main threat from depleted uranium, since it is low radioactive, is considered to be toxicity - for example, it is hypothetically a million times more dangerous to humans than radioactive exposure.

Depleted uranium (DU) is a byproduct of the uranium enrichment process used to make nuclear weapons and fuel for nuclear power plants. DU is a dense and hard metal that has been used for military purposes, such as in the production of armor-piercing shells and bullets.
Depleted uranium shells are a type of ammunition that uses DU as the penetrator material. When the shell hits its target, it can release DU particles into the air and the surrounding environment. The main concern with DU is that it is radioactive and can potentially cause harm to human health and the environment.
Exposure to depleted uranium can occur through inhalation, ingestion, or contact with contaminated soil or water. The health effects of DU exposure are still a matter of debate among scientists and researchers, but some studies have linked DU exposure to an increased risk of certain cancers, birth defects, and other health problems.
While depleted uranium shells can be effective in combat, their potential health and environmental impacts have led some countries to ban their use in warfare. It is important to take precautions to minimize exposure to depleted uranium and to properly handle and dispose of any materials contaminated with it.

Such behavior should have no place in civilized world. It's up to us to provide more military assistance to Ukraine - they should win this war. Absolutely depressing to realize how many towns and villages are destroyed the same way Bakhmut is being destroyed now. Russians don't care about civilians still living there, they are just destroying the city block by block, regardless of what they will hit.

This is a tied old argument. Apparently, Russia has been running out of ammo for over 6 months yet somehow Bakhmut has been reduced to rubble and is on its knees along with another 1000 miles of frontline. The only ones running out of ammo is Ukraine.

There are reports of Russia running low on ammunition - lower rates of artillery use, missile use, etc. Also reports of them preparing older T-62 tanks for battle. On the surface this looks bad, and it certainly isn't good from their perspective. But I wonder - how much are they holding in reserve? They have to be holding back some "top tier" capability in case they need to defend Russia. I believe the proportions of how much of their combat power they are willing to expend in the "Special Military Operation" vs how much they are holding in strategic reserve would tell us just how committed they are to success. That might be an indication of how likely they are to be negotiated out of Ukraine vs having to be forced out of Ukraine.

As of 2022, Russia had approximately 1,185 nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) stockpiled, compared with NATO, which had 800 ICBMs. By comparison, NATO has more nuclear submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs) as well as warheads that are intended to be delivered by aircraft. In terms of tactical, or nonstrategic nuclear warheads, Russia had a far greater amount, at 1,912 compared with 230 among NATO powers.

I'm sure the big priority for Russian tank crews would be to use covid style dust masks in their tank when a depleted uranium penetrator enters their tank! Depleted uranium is used in civilian airliners for counterweights and for shielding in hospitals against x-rays. I just did a google search.

    • moi2833

It's more like that is the earliest they could possibly muster enough forces, and also it puts pressure on russia since they have to explain to their population why they are unable to perform a spring offensive.

    • Ankky
      Ankky 2 months ago

@moi2833 i feel like for Russia, it wouldn't make sense to pay a huge price for every meter they get. They already have most of the areas they want to control. And I feel like ukraine is not capable of breaking through Russias defense, at least not without taking massive losses and idk if zelensky is ready for that.
