  • Every Which Way but Loose is a 1978 American action comedy film released by Warner Bros., produced by Robert Daley and directed by James Fargo. It stars Clint Eastwood in an uncharacteristic and offbeat comedy role as Philo Beddoe, a trucker and bare-knuckle brawler roaming the American West in search of a lost love while accompanied by his brother/manager, Orville, and his pet orangutan, Clyde. In the process, Philo manages to cross a motley assortment of characters, including a pair of police officers and an entire motorcycle gang (the Black Widows of Pacoima), who end up pursuing him for revenge.
Eastwood's appearance in the film, after his string of Spaghetti Western and Dirty Harry roles, somewhat startled the film industry and he was reportedly advised against making it. Although it was poorly reviewed by critics, the film went on to become an enormous success and became, along with its 1980 sequel Any Which Way You Can, two of the highest grossing Eastwood films. When adjusted for inflation, it ranks as one of the top 250 highest-grossing films of all time.

Absolutely! As you were nine, my brother & I were 8 & 6. We grew up on those movies ( AWWBL & AWWYou Can) . they were hilarious...but in a gritty kinda way..Who can forget the cliche dumb biker gang slapstick scenes of The Black Widows ... & the 'Ol Lady, "Ma" didn't take no BS from them. remember the scene.... "Get those GOD DAMN motorcycles off my GOD DAMN prop'ity!!" & starts blasting the double-barrel shotgun, trying to pick them all off as they scamper for escape like as if it were a 3 Stooges or a Charlie Chaplin type scene. So many more other great Clint Eastwood Classics & more serious action dramas, westerns & of course, The Outlaw, Josie Wales, Dirty Harry renegade city cop flicks, or Escape From Alcatraz, which didn't get nearly as much acclaim as it should have-E.F.Alcatraz was one of my favorites! How many films did he make with Sondra Locke? He gave her a whole career! I think her characters were raped in every movie she was in! She was more than that though- a good supporting actress too!Undoubtably, one of the Great movie eras in all Hollywood history. The Enormous impact that Clint Eastwood made on the entire industry is unprecedented. This man is a legend and he stands in a class in which there are no other members - nor will there ever be, he stands alone.

I was friends with Frank Wells son who ran Warner Brothers and was in the room for several screenings with mr. Eastwood, although we were very young he wanted our opinion of Dirty Harry and several other movies and when my friend's father asked us to leave the room he was always encouraging, let the boys stay. He drank only Olympia Beer and was one of the kindest and most patient man I've ever seen around children especially from someone in Hollywood.
