    “What’s a bad miracle?”
Oscar® winner Jordan Peele disrupted and redefined modern horror with Get Out and then Us. Now, he reimagines the summer movie with a new pop nightmare: the expansive horror epic, Nope.
The film reunites Peele with Oscar® winner Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Judas and the Black Messiah), who is joined by Keke Palmer (Hustlers, Alice) and Oscar® nominee Steven Yeun (Minari, Okja) as residents in a lonely gulch of inland California who bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.
Nope, which co-stars Michael Wincott (Hitchcock, Westworld) and Brandon Perea (The OA, American Insurrection), is written and directed by Jordan Peele and is produced by Ian Cooper (Us, Candyman) and Jordan Peele for Monkeypaw Productions. The film will be released by Universal Pictures worldwide.

I really loved the atmosphere of the movie. I like when there are no jumpscares, but constant feeling of "something bad" that makes you rip off the armpads on the seat.
Also, since it was a horror movie, this monkey scene was probably the most scariest part of the movie. And not in a bad way, the whole movie was scary, but this monkey part is 11/10.
Did you know it was inspired by a real woman who got mauled by a chimpanzee, Charla Nash?

This was actually the first movie of Jordan Peele's where I understood a majority of the social commentary and how everything tied together without needing to watch an analysis video afterwards. Even though this film is significantly longer than the last two, the ideas it tackles aren't nearly as big and complex as white liberalism or intersectional consumerism and classism. So Jordan is able to keep things more concise and, to paraphrase one review, tell the exact same story in different ways.

    • reindeer age
reindeer age 3 months ago +2

Agree with both of your points. If anything, I believe every single aspect of Jordan's writing and directing is completely deliberate which goes to show that on these three separate occassions he managed to provoke thought and steer the audience towards a conclusion with specific means and at his own pace, which really proves his versatility and capability to be as subtle as he desires. We haven't seen half of what Jordan Peele is capable, he has proven himself to be a masterful director, a real artist and visionary. We are witnessing cinematic history being made right on our screens

    • Lindsay Monroe
Lindsay Monroe 3 months ago +4

I’m the opposite, I love this film because the social commentary seems to be much more subdued and hidden in the film itself than his previous films, this new film makes his previous ones, while both still great and well made films, look as if they were beating you in the head with their commentary of classism and white liberalism.

@Greg Starzyk this is his most David Lynch like film, so it’s not for everyone. This also makes it his most rewatchable film, as there are so many details and parallels throughout the movie that you will miss on first viewing, as well as layers upon layers of different themes. One detail I only recently noticed is the mirror like helmet the guy on the bike where’s is a parallel to the mirror that causes the horse to kick at the beginning. There are also many subtle visual cues to the UFO, such as the lampshade and the alien like cameras during the Gordy scene. Imo this might actually be my favourite movie ever

so many pieces of symbolism in this trailer alone, the camera design that look like aliens holding them, the table cloth that jupe was hiding behind appears like the camera lens at the end of the movie, the reflections through mirrors, the balloon jupe getting swallowed, and the “impossible shot” and “bad miracle” of the upright shoe. i have truly never seen more well-done symbolic foreshadowing in a movie.

This film was a spectacle in theaters. It started off dry but the film got suspenseful as it went on and the acting by Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer were superb. It didn't feel like a horror movie, it was a sci-fi horror. Another home run by Jordan Peele.

    • MrJagermeister

@Lauder (Spoilers, obviously) - Nope is a film about spectacle. It’s outright said by Steven Yuen’s character Jupe, in his monologue about what they’ve been doing for the past six months. People can’t look away; like a car crash. A live studio audience hiding in their seats, choosing to peer out and watch a triggered animal become a predator rather than fleeing for their safety. It’s the opening quote of the movie - Nahum 3:6: I will cast abominable filth upon you, make you vile, and make you a spectacle.
What saved Jupe at the time was by keeping his gaze fixed on the upright shoe. What are the odds of something like that happening, for it to stand on it’s own in that position? Only something so bizarre could cause a person to look past the horror unfolding in front of them, and as a result the chimp didn’t see him as a predator and suddenly showed remorse and offered his exploding fist bump. But Jupe forgot this lesson, and so he built stands and sold tickets and stared it right in it’s eye, and swallowed whole. Interesting how it looks like his cowboy hat from below, but when it’s over O.J., he refuses to look up so he refuses to “wear” it and let it pass over him instead.
It’s sort of a metaphor for the cheap cash-in dog and pony show side of art and spectacle that feed off of the rich cultural black heritage as well as the countless members of crew that contribute to art and are never credited for it - like the nameless black jockey in the first recorded images of film (called Haywood by Jordan Peele, as his name is actually a mystery).
Having Jupe’s gimmick-of-the-moment studio backlot absorbing the assets of the Haywoods (their horses) to literally feed the beast (while he tells OJ what he wants to hear about there being a path towards getting those horses back, and outright offers to buy their ranch) while OJ rocks the Scorpion King crew hoodie seems to reveal how Peele views the industry and what he sees as his role in it. And by sort of recycling Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Signs, etc. and remixing them, he delivered the kind of movie that he wished someone would have made for him. The documentarian that died getting the perfect shot made a lot more sense when I watched the film thinking about what Peele is trying to accomplish as a director that a lot of people expect to relay deeper meanings in his films.
There’s SO much foreshadowing on the second viewing of this film. I can’t believe how much of it was out there in plain sight, or openly talked about. How many lines that went over my head on first watch (like the scene where OJ follows Ghost, I think it was, and hears Jupe’s speech about leaving their changed and them having done this every week for the past six months, from allll the way across the valley) made me understand how much Jupe is a villain in this film. And Peele depicts the “viewers” as Jupe calls them, as having a mouth shaped like almost like an IMAX screen. We go and we watch and we digest. And Peele wants to manipulate, and terrify, and captivate, and make us think. Yeah, definitely go see this again if you get a chance. If it doesn’t win Best Sound at the Oscars, it’ll be criminal. And the cinematography is top notch.

I don’t know how anyone can watch this specific preview and not want to be curious enough to watch it. Even I feel confused watching this after watching the movie lol

This film was amazing but there is still so much unanswered.
Biggest one is the importance of Corgi, maybe in the eyes of forcing a non-domesticated animal like the horse scene at the start and the alien ship scene, but it seems so specific to have a whole character arc surrounding the character.
Still, hot take but Jordan Peele’s best film to date, Kaluuya killed it.

I recently did an unprofessional, informal movie conversation about Jurassic Park and pointed out that, even though it still hits amazing, we’ll never have another movie that uses as many effective “face shots” of people looking at something because that trick is now a movie trick of the past.
Nope. I was wrong. This still worked well in 2022.

Well that scene where the Gordy takes off his hat I think we were looking at his eyes through that his experience at the same time he was looking at the shoe it was like glimpses of what he remembered.
Specially when we went in through the back of the flashback of the jungle or the back garden it was like a sense of power especially with the scenery of the characters

I was thinking that it was the alien’s eye too! *SPOILER ALERT* when it showed all those people getting abducted, I feel like the shot was shown from the alien’s point of view and then the camera showed the eye of the alien right after.

So I think the alien creature, like an octopus that camouflages, chose to camouflage in Jupe’s trauma. The monkey scene on the TV set is full of all the elements! The lights on the set and the cloth hanging down from the table that little Jupe is under looks like the aliens 4:3 mouth / aperture at the end of the film. When the monkey gets shot and we see all the guts, we’ll that’s what happens to those who get sucked up in it. It’s like the alien became a giant camera in the sky with an aperature that eats what it sees looking back. It’s like an angler fish crossed with a mechanical movie camera crossed with a clam or muscle/jellyfish/ crossed with a whale, crossed with the imagery and essence of Jupes trauma.

This movie 🎬 is an Instant Classic and hands down (IMO) Jordan Peele's BEST work so far! 👍🏽I've seen this movie three times so far and has so many layers and hidden gems 💎 in it that it's one of those rare movies that will be watched whenever it is on, much like JAWS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. I saw this in AMC's Dolby Theater the first time thinking that would be the Best way to watch it. It was great in Dolby but IMAX is where you MUST see this! It was filmed using IMAX cameras so the visuals are MORE stunning and the sound takes rattles your recliner in action scenes. Re-viewing this movie allows you to catch subtle hints and multiple nods towards Peele's mentors, Spielberg, George Lucas etc.

    • 0221serendipity
      0221serendipity 4 months ago

@itsmeabc123 : Dolby usually is incredible. It pales in comparison to IMAX for this movie 🎬. NOPE was filmed using IMAX cameras. I think that's the difference maker. Some movies and blockbusters are just "shown" on the IMAX screen but not filmed in IMAX and it's just a very big picture. I saw Thor Love and Thunder in IMAX and it wasn't as impressive as this.
