    • Mobilized Panda

I liked early Naomo. Her character became way too over emotional in the later seasons. Early Naomi was an ex-OPA operative and her insights into Fred Johnson and Anderson Dawes gave her an edge in the Roci crew. She also had the total loyalty of Amos which gave her this sense of authority equal or greater than early Holden's. Late season Naomi is constantly blindsided, wishy washy, and no longer really pragmatic.

@Ary Brito your kind of thinking is very prominent lol. Where you thinking anything and everything negative directed at a black person is racism. Its like crying wolf and does nothing but muddy the water of actually racial issues.

@Ross Carlson I do sort of get where you are coming from, and giving you credit since it seems clear you haven't read the books to the end like some of us (which explain quite well why all that was done) - those are a different medium, where things happen a bit different - yeah, they left some things as not resolved. I think that's find, fitting the story actually, because they reached an important moment of time, where at least the three original factions make peace. In reality too there are always loose threads, future that comes with other people and their complications, fortune, misfortune etc. It's about how we as humanity deal with it (that's what to me The Expanse is about, and definitely the books do, at the end of the 9th, provide a very satiffying end that justifies that view), and so, here they end. For now as in any story. It could be 'and they lived happily ever after' with Laconia messing up behind their own closed off gate, and the other aliens never being triggered enough to cause disaster. Or maybe not, but that's a different story for another time. Anyway, hope you find peace with it, because there were so many great moments in this season, and in the last episode too.

@Dante I didn't read the books so thank you for explaining that! And that does make a big difference in how I view season six. I wish that had been communicated somehow because I'm sure I wasn't the only fan of the show that hadn't read the books.

@Ross Carlson Agreed. It felt like they did season six thinking there would be additional seasons, but they knew this was the last one. It would have been a great season if there were going to be more but as a final season and finale, I completely agree, it missed the mark. I just wish there was more coming.

She did a great job but her belter accent coming and going drove me crazy. If she was talking to another belter she'd lay it on super heavy but if she was just having a scene with an earther crew member she just sounded British.

At the negotiating table, Avasarala didn't even have to name the person with the qualities she was describing, that everyone in the room except himself were thinking "yeah that's Holden alright"; and for him to quit and put Drummer in charge during the inauguration... Classic Holden. Great characters and amazing interpretations by all actors. Sad to see the show end, but it was a phenomenal ride; thank you.

When they shook hands, a quote from way back the timeline popped up in my mind; "You know what I love about Mars? They still dream. We gave up."
And Avasarala realized that Holden was the one who - despite all that had happened - still dreamed about a better future for all of humanity.

You are so right. She was irritating me with how she was treating Peaches but she made peace with that. The scene with her and her infant son just before she “killed” hi and then the scream and her breakdown I felt so heartbroken for her. I don’t have kids but I could empathize just with those scenes. Brilliant…

    • Francis Picotte
Francis Picotte 3 months ago +3

The most bone chilling scream I’ve heard in cinema is hands down that by Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin in Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies. The scene is so powerful, I feel a lump in the throat and get a quavering voice just talking or even thinking about it. But that Dominique’s scream even compares says a lot about her acting and this scene in general. In fact, her whole arc in season 5 and 6 is bonkers.

OMFG YES!!! I felt it from the moment she proposed the plan to take out marcos and the Paela, Dominique sold Naomi's moment of realization that she was about to kill her son she'd been longing to mother and be with!! Then they quickly flip to her as a mom and a Filip as a toddler, maybe that hits a different heart string because of parenthood and the sense of desperation. 👏

It's because this show is based on book six of a series of 9 books. They are ending the series here because there is a thirty-year time jump between book 6 and book 7. There has been talk about continuing the series but it's going to be more of a spin-off or movie or something. That's if they decide to do it.

The scene at the end of the final episode with Holden and Naomi expressed the reason I think this series is so popular. Holden has done something very controversial, and he says he wonders if he did the right thing.
Naomi answers: "You did. You followed your conscience in the hope that others would follow theirs. You didn’t do it for a reward, or a pat on the head.
The universe never tells us if we did right or wrong. It’s more important to try and help people and know that you did. More important that someone else’s life gets better than for you to feel good about yourself.
“You never know the effect you might have on someone, not really. Maybe one core thing you said haunts them forever. Maybe one moment of kindness gives them comfort or courage. Maybe you said the one thing they needed to hear. It doesn’t matter if you ever know. You just have to try.”
    I f***ing love this show.

that Naomi dialogue sums up my life perspective now that Ive turned 60 and am concerned if my 40 years as a christian disciple (as opposed to an "Evangelical" jackass) have been properly spent: have I made enough of a difference in the world? And yes, I just have to have the trust that I made a difference at critical moments to those who needed it most.

There's an argument to be made that its the best series (taken as a whole), since ST TNG. In terms of how it moved the genre forward, from what we used to consider was a futuristic sci fi show, to what the next stage is and could be. Incorporating new innovations, real world scientific knowledge, special effects and dare I say "realism" in our sci fi. Its really that good. A high bar has been set.
I'm optimistic about the future, but I'm also realistic. I want more Expanse, but I'm worried that good things never last.

Can we take a second and appreciate the boarding party roster easter eggs at the 26:06 mark of the final episode of The Expanse? There were names from multiple Sci-Fi shows listed, other than Bobbie Draper and Amos Burton:
    J. O'Neil - Col. Jack O'Neil, Stargate
    C. Sheppard - Col Sheppard, Stargate Atlantis
    K. Thrace - Kara Thrace (Starbuck) Battlestar Galactica
    W. Riker - Cmdr. Will Riker, Star Trek TNG
    G. Ackbar - Admiral Ackbar, Star Wars
    D. Idaho - Duncan Idaho, Dune
    R. Deckard - Rick Deckard, Blade Runner
    K. Flynn - Kevin Flynn, Tron
    D. Quaid - Douglas Quaid, Total Recall
    D. Bowman - David Bowman, 2001: A Space Odyssey
    S. Connor - Sarah Connor, The Terminator Movie Franchise
Vazquez, Hudson, Hicks - Marines from Aliens (the second movie)
    E. Ripley - Ellen Ripley, The Aliens Movie Franchise
And there were a few other names that I did not catch, but I'd bet they are sci-fi related.
I mean, that was a really, really nice touch to pay homage to other sci-fi series that came before the expanse. Well done guys and gals! Well done!

Fantastic finale! Already started reading Book 7 once I was done.
Yes, this season was a tad rushed, but honestly they did a great job. It fits cause the entire plot of this season was all about being quick or it's over. So the show also rushing stuff kinda felt natural. To me at least.
For the people who complained about how the show changed certain things from the book, yes and? You all need to realize that an adaptation should never be 1:1. It's the perfect opportunity for the creators to play around and make some changes to better fit the new format. Or maybe do something that they always wanted to in the source material, but didn't for various reasons.
And for the people who keep saying that they were left hanging and unfinished. Uhm, the books are always there so what are you talking about? Be happy that anything got adapted. So it is not unfinished, you just refuse to interact with the source.

    • LicoriceLain
      LicoriceLain 4 months ago +4

Also, the adaptation was done by the writers themselves. They largely chose what to change, what to abbreviate.

I was roasted at my wedding rehearsal dinner toast because of how often I would tell people to watch the show. I hope you take pride knowing you brought happiness to many many people.
PS - I would pay an obscene price to watch books 7-9 on TV.

I want Dominique and the crew to know that Naomi's scream was cathartic to us. We needed that scream. It acknowledged all the pain. It was primal.
And Holden holding her (perfect name for the character, for he _holds_ the crew - and the whole _system_ - together) Holden holding and comforting Naomi... that was also for us the audience.
It was more than lovely. It was part of the catharsis for millions of women out there that made a similar choice... and the writers comforted _us_ as much as comforted Naomi Nagata. It was an embrace of her choice to sacrifice that part of her to save everyone else.
I add: thank you for not letting that intense, personal wound fester into an emotional scar. Thank you for letting Filip _choose life._

The expanse, season 1 to 6 is a series I can recommend. Its hard these days with early cancellations, to tell people its worth starting and getting all the way through (Santa Clarita Diet or game of thrones even).
The expanse is 100 percent a recommend binge for big sci-fi fans and for casual tv viewers.

  • Calvin Chase

I appreciated the series via the lens of the books. It's like that with Sci-FY to those of us that read pulp as kids.
Exspance is definitely unique, but where that comes from is completely the writers creation. The cast was outstanding, but the actors were given a solid foundation for their characters by the writers. Star Trek , Firefly, Exspance.

I thought Naomi summed it up well on how Holden did what he did: by being honest and earning trust. Certainly consensus and things like that came into play, but consensus isn't possible without trust, particularly trust that's earned. Even the least trusting person on Earth, at the end came to trust Holden, even when she disagreed with him. Good stuff. Hope there's a way to keep bringing the books to the screen.

    • Francis Hoang

... and plot armor. Alex was a cargo pilot so we rooted for him when he got the Roci out of trouble with mad skilla, he was a hidden gem, an ace pilot when given the chance. Then Holden stepped into the pilot seat and did the same thing. It kinda cheapened the pilot role. The space battles in season 6, the Roci should've be blown up. They should've made Clarissa the pilot as she was Julie's sister who was known as a great pilot, so it could more easily be explained why she was a decent pilot as well.

Thank you for the show and for these 'aftershow' episodes, especially for this one. I appreciated the insight about the central message of "The Expanse", the advantages of the collaborative way to solve things and how Holden contrasts the usual way a hero is presented. Most cultural media don't bother to deviate from standard expectations, but the representation of this kind of options is very important for us to learn the necesary skills to solve the complex problems that mankind is facing at this moment and supposedly in the future. I'm very impressed!
