Its not just about jokes. It's about masterclass acting, facial expressions, body gestures, miraculous voice, dialogue delivery, pitch and tone of voice, and whatnot.
    Genius for so many reasons.

I wonder if what you associate him with depends on your age? I'm 60, and if I think of Rowan Atkinson, it's either as 'Blackadder', 'not the 9 o'clock news' or on stage, doing this. I totally agree with you that Mr Bean is not his best work! If you're not familiar with NTNON have a look, it's probably a bit dated now, but still really funny!😂😊

I did know him first as Mr. Bean but really loved his performance as Blackadder when I first found those 4 seasons in my pre-teen years. Watching Blackadder motivated me, a non-native speaker, to become fluent with English and to develop some of that witty sense of humor.

@Thomas I actually know them but they are all American comedians. Dave Chapel is only funny if you can relate to his racial experience. I don’t and I don’t care either. Adam Sandler was a popular movie comedian in the 90’s / 00’s? I don’t think I have ever watched something with him that actually make me laugh. Saget is the only one I have never heard, I’ll take a look

@Lujinah Jfairi Nope. In 2013 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) not a knight.
The Order of the British Empire starts at Member (MBE) then Officer (OBE) then Commander (CBE) then Knight Commander (KBE) and finally Knight Grand Cross (GBE).
CBE is not a knighthood and doesn't confer the right to use, "Sir."

    • Jurgen Zaka
      Jurgen Zaka Year ago

@Roger Stalder no the movies were great. Dont watch the ratings. Nowadays they dont watch mr bean that much and not many know who he is as they havent seen the series. His acting is great. Thats how the character is.
And yes as i said Jim was my favourite actor back then i liked him more than any other actor. Its just american humor vs british humor. They are different. Jim was more approachable to the audience a newer and younger face kind of dumb in some of movies and brilliant in others. But he was not that serious though in many movies.
But when i saw Rowans standup comedies i thought he is brilliant.
Jim is my favourite though and i dont get why he left so early. He is not that active anymore. And started to not like his movies anymore the same as i did before considering ive seen them like more than 6 times

    • Roger Stalder
      Roger Stalder Year ago

@Jurgen Zaka Yea but The Movies who Rowan made was terrible actualy. This Mr.Bean Movies had a Rating of 6.5/10 that is actualy very very bad. and it isnt the Movie itself. its his Bad acting, and only Play 1 role what made this Movies so bad. And okay. Ave Ventura isnt actualy better tho :) Cant watch them today anymore ^^ then id rather look Truman Show or somethign lke that. But Bean was great in his old TV series, thats all Movie wise. havent realy heard of his serious roles. means they also wasnt that great. dont help if u act good and no1 sees it ^^ And yea i get the point of Rowans straight Face. I mean i sure do like the English Homor more then the American one. (tho Germans are great too) But cant deny that i laughed more from Jim carrey then Rowan. at Rowan im also more have a straight Face, and think: ''how intelligent was this joke'' then real laugh lol. at Jim u dont have to think, u just laugh. i think thats the biggest diffrence about them.

Rowan is indeed, one to bring you to tears. I laughed so hard I almost wet my pants. It is a very rare comedian who can create and project so many different characters and own so many facial expressions as to believe he is actually the person personified. All of his stand-up, movies, and series are unparalleled. We, as Americans, are especially enamored of British humor, but Rowan is the Best. Love him to death.

@Banana Not exactly. It's only racist if you're thinking of it that way. So in turn, the person calling it out to be 'racist' is probably the racist in question. I swear it would go away so easily if people just stopped seeing others as different and appreciate how different we are. 🙄

Impersonating an accent isn't itself offensive. He's not saying 'Look how silly these Indians sound'. He needs to convey it's an Indian restaurant and the accent is just enough to get that across. At no point is the accent the joke

    • Winston_KillDeath
      Winston_KillDeath Year ago +24

It works because he’s not wearing brown face and the restauranteur is not the butt of the joke, drunk british soccer football fans are, and we’re empathizing with his character.

the brilliant part of that sketch is that he's not making fun of the (presumably) Indian restaurateur, but he aims it directly at the rude, crude and drunk Brits. Plus his accent is actually pretty good ...

Especially since he died. He will be missed by everyone who spoke English as well as those that don't. I loved Blackadder, The Thin Blue Line and Mr. Bean but his stand-up and skits from Not the 9 o'clock News will always hold special places in my heart. Rest in Peace Rowan Atkinson.

Rowan actually has a stutter, and has trouble pronouncing b's which us why he pronounces "bob" so deliberately.

Of course british people can be proud of a lot of things, but their humor has to be somewhere at the top of the list. I just love it! And they have so many fantastic comedians I could watch all day long. Unfortunately, this kind of humor is rarely found here in Germany, which is a shame.

nitza Gomej possibly he is I adore Rowan Atkinson have ever since I watched him as a young child in the early eighties he is my favourite equal to George Carlin who I adore too. I only recently came across George doing stand up which is a shame he is hilarious but in a totally different manner. That being said I do adore Rowan but I have not heard every comic ever so I can go no further than I did. I doubt anyone will ever match these to comedic geniuses in their respective fields but only a sith deals in absolutes. Btw this is also my favourite sketch by RA its very good on so many levels.
