This Amazing View Of Saturn Is Impossible
It's a popular trope in Science Fiction, and indeed in scientific visualization, a stunning view of Saturn and its rings viewed while standing on one of Saturn's moons. However, the reality is that only 2 major moons - Mimas and Iapetus - offer anything other than a near perfect edge on view of the rings. And there's good scientific reasons for why this is the case.

NASA's New Airliner Experiment To Make Flying Less Expensive
Views 1M12 hours ago
This week NASA signed onto a Space Act Agreement with Boeing on a project to build a full size version of the Transonic Truss Braced Wing design with a goal of demonstrating significant improvements in efficiency that will directly translate to improved fuel consumption and lower costs. This may be a blueprint for a future airliner, fuel cost is one of the major considerations to aircraft opera...
Launching Into Sunlight & Revealing The Moon's Shadows - Deep Space Updates January 20th
Views 168K16 hours ago
Lots of Launches already in 2023, China and SpaceX are both throwing lots of rockets up there. Virgin Orbit and ABL Space Systems both attempted launches which ended in failure, with ABL only rising a few hundred feet before all the engines shut down and the rocket fell back onto the launch site. Elsewhere there are a pair of small NASA spacecraft having trouble getting to the moon due to engin...
NASA's Plan To Rescue Stranded Astronauts - Playing Sardines In A Space Capsule
Views 370KDay ago
In 1973 there were concerns that the crew on Skylab may be stuck without a ride home after half the thrusters on the Service module failed. In response NASA turned to its existing Skylab Rescue plans which involved squeezing 5 people into a capsule designed for 3, and assigned Vance Brand and Don Lind to train for this mission. Over the next few days this crew showed the rescue was possible, bu...
Why Did Virgin Orbit's First Launch From The UK Fail To Reach Orbit?
Views 387K14 days ago
It was supposed to be the first orbital launch from the UK, and Western Europe, but during the second stage the Newton 4 Engine appears to have shut down early, and given the poor quality of telemetry on the stream it's hard to figure out exactly what might have cause this, but we have a few ideas.... Dream Chaser - The Dream Of Lifting Body Space Planes
Views 271K14 days ago
Dream Chaser isn't the first space plane, it is however on course to be the first operational Lifting Body space plane, intended to perform its first demo launch on a Vulcan rocket and rendezvous with the International Space Station during 2022. But its been a long time coming, the concept of lifting body space planes goes back to the 1950's, and NASA was test flying demonstrators 60 years ago,...
SpaceX's Record Breaking 2022 - Deep Space Updates - January 5th 2023
Views 158K21 day ago
The first of my Deep Space Updates for 2023 - The final launches of 2022, where China proved that it can just about keep up with SpaceX if you count the entire nation's rocket fleet and ignore metrics such as 'total mass to orbit'. There were a few other news stories, but the holiday season has slowed the usual reports of big events and I decided to talk about what we can expect in 2023.... but...
The Computer Designed To Die In Microseconds
Views 290K21 day ago
I found this fascinating story about a computerized telemetry system which was designed to be placed in the heart of a nuclear warhead, replacing the plutonium pit in a test device. I'm not 100% sure this was flown because the documentation disappears about 20 years ago, which is likely to be the case if it was actually used in a test. Can You Cook a Turkey by Dropping It From Space?
Views 196K28 days ago
I did the math! It doesn't work to drop it straight down, but if you put a suitably sized 'oven' spacecraft into a 160km orbit and let it warm up, cook the turkey then deploy decelerators then we can probably get a large turkey properly cooked and ideally delivered to the target Spreadsheet with numbers! docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1n99fi1RgU2-LQTVe5cDbS2feqyzWIipqJMuUPSovEpQ/edit?usp=sharin...

Can you dream of a White Christmas on Mars? Sure if you're close to the polar ice caps there's a chance of snow. But other planets have different types of precipitation which isn't necessarily water, and isn't necessarily from clouds. 9:34 to 9:43 - what is going on there? Is that a tiny moon within the rings with some sort of 'turbulence' behind it? Also appears to be a long shadow extenting from it.

  • obrienct
    obrienct 12 minutes ago

it would make more sense if the brighter rings were the result of cryovulcanism, rather than extrasolar debris. idk, thats just me

That's a shame! We should nudge the orbit of the most likely habitable moon of Saturn so that the rings are more visible from it.

Excellent and unless they make the wings fold they aren't going to fit any normal airport. As was shown the manufacturers are so concerned their new plane folds the tips up to prevent them from being ripped off or whatever. One can only imagine pilots playing bumper cars with wings a half again as wide as they are now. They might as well pull the old swing-wing design and they have those parts in the boneyard too.

Thx, Scott! Sci-fi art is riddled with inaccuracies, almost as much as Sci-fi is. But let's face it: it's ALL fiction* - and like any blockbuster movie, there has to be lots of eye-candy. (7-of-9, anyone?) Those books ain't gonna sell themselves without a snappy cover, nor the movies without a dramatic poster. But sometimes I have to snort. The one that always dismays me is the meteor heading to Earth and already on fire at 100,000km above the atmosphere. Laughably bad! * (I like to think of it as 'Fictional Science', and have cheerfully written heaps of it).

Really great video Scott. So.. did you do race off comparisons between minivans before getting the Honda?? I really enjpy the concept and look forward to seeing what happens. The thing that is very disturbing to me is my own "CRINDGE" when you say Boeing is doing it. I used to have confidence and respect in that company, From what I've seen with SLS and Orion and few other major manufactureing issues it looks like no one really knows what is going on oveer there. It kinda looks like a Clown Car show over there and they WERE the leaders.. At least their aim is good enough to shoot themselves in the foot!

Unfortunately more efficient planes will not result in lower carbon emissions. It will simply result in cheaper flights and more aircraft in the air. Synthetic fuels using hydrogen as a base product are really the only option. At least untill we have a working space elevator.

For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. (Romans 10:13) Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. (James 4:4) When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. (Mark 2:17)

  • Alan Deli

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: (Acts 17:30) I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. (Luke 13:5) Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 20:21)
