ArmorGames is amazing, they are the reason I can say "I made flash games for beer money" in college, and are a bit part of my Indy tinkerer journey.

Seeing so many people wanting to quit their daily job and become full time solo indie developers makes me loose hope, because 99% of them fail. But, what the heck, even if I won't get any money from my game, I will still be happy with the excitement and joy I had making it. It's like building a logo game: it's challenging, hard, but fun and rewarding too just because you see the final result.

Do not get excited with making a fund raiser, they only work if you have the audience and that is usually from advertising.

#1 Clean Code is the A&O .. the earlier you start with it the better it is... Writing Bad code is like a habit.. if you do it to long its hard to change your habit cause it got a characteristic of you... and we all know its harder to re-learn something as to learn it correct from the beginning... You dont need to write perfect code from start, dont even know if there exists perfect code^^ but it makes your life easier in the future if you try doing it clean from beginning, else you learn it through refactoring and there you will see the difference between .. if you tryed it from start with clean code or not.. Re-factoring sometimes costs you a lot of time.. and the more you have to refactor the more time you lose for nothing...

"i felt like I made zero progress" while looking at the menu screen of the game you made. No, I'm pretty sure you made some progress.

Great video and I thank you - some useful guidance here (especially as I'm at the point of wrestling with Unity for the first time). I subbed. BUT - small thing and I'm sorry: 'simplistic' means simple to the point of stupidity - you mean 'simple', that is not over-complicated. Sorry, that one really grinds my gears.

Damn, all those ideas about the stories for Pinstripe sound like awesome spin offs that could all be in the same universe.

Yup pretty much. Another important one is to scope projects properly. It's better to get dozens upon dozens of small prototypes out the door and gather knowledge, skills, feedback than to immediately lob yourself at making your dream game. Though I really appreciate how your video asks these developers to one calm down and two call for help, when this issue is unmanaged it creates incredibly toxic workloads that are not only self-imposed, but cause the developers to lose sight of making a fun game for the players.

Extruding up from the map edges is such a clever technique, at least to me. Maybe it's normal in the industry, but this was the first time I've seen it.

I've always made games in tiny or zero budgets - 100k is a pipe dream, as is getting a publisher.

  • Romano Grasnick

Thanks for sharing your experiences with making games with us. It is a lot of work, even if it is a small project. The worst thing, in my opinion, is to get not noticed by anyone when releasing the game. So marketing is important. I learned this every time I publish a game and the download numbers do not rise at all. All the work for just me?

  • CharlieDreemur

Thank you for that. I appreciate this video.

  • It's not me, it's you

You always suggested releasing one crappy game before making your dream game. Why do you now recommend making two?
