The price vs inflation argument kinda falls apart when you remember that these companies also repeatedly find ways to nickel and dime players way beyond the initial purchase.

We can argue about prices, but one thing everyone, companies as well should be aware of, the industry back then wasn't as saturated as now. The sheer scale of options what games you can pick up these days are astronomical (and the more money you throw at the table won't magically guarantee you better quality), and games back then lasted unlike the majority of the new ones. Charging us for 70-80€ for a single game (especially when that particular game doesn't even worth half the price), in such a competitive environment will eventually backfire.

It's easy to not preorder a single player game, youre quite literally missing out on nothing. It's a lot more manipulative in the case of multiplayer franchises, where people want to be the first to unlock whatever gear or weapons could give them an advantage and increase their enjoyment of the game. EA do this a lot, but at the very least they release tech demos for fifa and free open betas for battlefield before launch for people to see how buggy it is. I think the next step will be far, far worse, where companies do a cyberpunk-style press embargo for a big multiplayer game with amazing, fraudulent ads.

Eternal Ring sold 300K copies while Elden Ring sold 20M copies. So the $60 tag is not a “Steal” as you make it seem

You know what would have made this at least somewhat more powerful? Even though I think the whole story is creatively bankrupt to begin with, a thing that would have given the game a bitter sweet end would be when Ellie gets to the point where she's trying to jam the knife into Abby's throat and the game basically tells you its up to you. After a whole game of being dragged around by the games story and having no say in the outcome the narrative break has been pulled away. The moment is here, you have the knife, it is up to YOU the PLAYER whether or not Abby dies. You finally get to decide if Ellie breaks the cycle, purposely fail the QTE which would let Abby live (And NOT create a game over) or you give in to your anger and thirst for vengeance and let Ellie kill Abby by completing the QTE. It would have, after seeing all this unfold with no input, put the climax of the story in YOUR hands. It would've been much more powerful than what we got. Overall I think the core of Part 2's story is just not great, but if they had done this it would have been that sniper shot in the butt Jake was looking for.

Making games is hard yet 99% of devs did a perfectly fine job before internet updates. It's not that games are hard to make, it's just that companies prioritize the wrong things now, wasting time on garbage instead of things that actually matter in their games. Take away every corporate decision in game making, like monetization schemes, and these same companies that made trash will suddenly create decent, working games in the same amount of time or less.
