Schizophonic. that's enough said.
Butch Vig what a legend!
Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving With a Pict. Hey, it's unique.
Although he has always been popular in Germany, Peter Schilling's Major Tom is considered by many to be a one hit wonder in America.
As a young guy it just feels like so many young great musicians are overlooked because of generation bias. Older folks always think music from their gen is the best and it’s such a silly and closed minded way of thinking. Great player tho
Jimi would've been an iconic guitarist and musical force of nature in any era... I DISAGREE WITH YOUR OPINION! 😳
Rick why in the HELL didn’t you spend more time on Dave’s amazing drumming??
alib ba ta check it out
I love Chicago to death. I will never tire of hearing a Terry Kath Chicago era song (1-7).
This was better than any interview I've ever heard between two producers of music can't wait for part 2 thank you Rick for all your efforts there is nobody out there like you
Dylan is green screened in! don't believe the lies! just like rick's wall of amps! look into it! 👀👀
I wonder if something will be invented one day that will be so good that it makes all music just disappear. Rick, I can't say it's definitely video games, but it is definitely one of the newer technologies they have. They are not evolving out of liking music. I was not aware of any of this.
Almost sounds like No Remorse...
Butch is the man, great interview Rick
I was surprised that you picked Elton John's piano sound for your top 20, my favorite of his was Funeral for a Friend, and while the recording on the Yellow Brick road album was not bad, my favorite performance was one that he did with a huge church pipe organ, awesome beyond belief.
this dude is such a jedi
Greed from those who had no talent for creating anything musical, killed the music business…
No Geddy Lee; Chris Squire; Michael Anthony; or especially Billy Sheehan?!
I have been wanting to hear this conversation since i was a kid.
I listen to the CURE and DM at least several times a week if not daily! 😂
Rick, just to clear this up: You definitely count as an old man.
Great content. Thank you, Butch and Rick!
Never heard of Aerosmith until I went to a Slade concert in NY. Aerosmith was the backup band. The audience was so blown away by Aerosmith and Dream on, that they booed Slade when they came on and yelled for Aerosmith. It got so bad that the members of Aerosmith came back on stage and played with the Slade members. Been a fan since.
Minor correction, Kurt smashed a strat, not a Mosrite, when recording lithium. You can see a picture of the smashed strat on the Neve console from the Nevermind sessions in the Nirvana biography Come As You Are the Story of Nirvana. That aside, fantastic interview. Thank you Rick and Butch.
lot of adam jones in that chorus. and a lot maynard in the vocals. just sayin'...
Hell yeah can't wait to watch this later
I love Butch's work but the Chainsaw Kittens "Flipped Out In Singapore" is one of my all time favorite albums he produced.
YES PLEASE_ MUSIC FOR THE MASSES - WHAT MAKES THIS SONG GREAT CUZ IT IS- I remember reading and article in 1987 how many of these bands like The cure, Depesh Mode The smith moressey and others would fade away- Now 40 years later they are still here and on Tour for God sake- I love it-
Fagen and Becker's writing and arranging is unparalleled. While I wouldn't say he has a great singing voice, Fagen's voice is perfect to this kind of music. The rest of the musical troupe was basically interchangeable; however, both Fagen and Becker had extremely high standards and expectations. I'm a huge fan of Larry Carlton, and will always regard his guitar work with Steely Dan to be his finest moments.
Season of the Witch… Donovan
Whoops maybe a third chord too
Thank you, to both of you for doing this...such an important interview.
Gregg soloing the grooves was very funny
OMG! YES! Butch is one of my all time fav producers. This is amazing! Thank you Rick!
Rick, it would be so great if you got Bob Rock on your channel. I'm sure he would do it. Send him a message. That guy's story and history are super interesting as well.
Rick, long time drummer here. I always wanted to play piano. Do you think the Beato Ultimate Bundle would transfer well with learning piano? I know the ear training program would be added value. Keep up the great Clip-Share channel 👍
But what about Telstar by the Tornadoes, first US#1 by a British band and the harbinger of synth
In the 90’s I was pretty sure I was going to marry Shirley Manson, but later realized we probably wouldn’t get along. Stupendous interview with Butch. We raise folks on pedestals, but he seems like such a regular dude.
What I don't like is that I'm being told I should like this Rush track, when I don't. There are notes coming off the guitar that don't fit with the improv at the beginning. Also, there's this backseat driving on the part of Mr Beato, interrupting the music, telling me why I should feel the way he does about this particular song. I resent this. And, so what about the bell??? What about that, was supposed to impress? Rush had lots better songs. Pick something between 1981 and 85 maybe. In that time, there are things more professional, less primitive.
He reminded me of a motorcycling axiom… “don’t worry about where you are, cause you’re not going to be there very long”.
Amazing
For the love of God please tell me he mentions what snare Jimmy used on gish! I know he won’t he has said in the past that he doesn’t remember but you never know.
That was incredible. Can't wait for the next interview with him. The craft. The instincts. Literally awesome.
Have to mention Gregg Rolie’s work on his Hammond B3 on early Journey and before that, Santana.
Coldplay is often brilliant. People started hating them in mass because of a stupid joke in a movie. Sad sad sheep.
Your first three strums, around 26:30, when you join Gilmore for the power chords, sounds soo good! There was a heavy, full sound, with you hammering through, actually really worked. Not demonstrative, though that aswell, but performative; like, i really enjoy a good cover, and I'd burn through the play button on one built around that sound
reminds me a band Rick rubin produces on 2000 called PALOALTO
Who's the best guitarist?
Great to see that real guitarists do air guitar too
Amazing song and brilliant analysis by Rick. I just don’t understand how Seal was the only author of the song if he didn’t know how to play any instrument. He did come up with the lyrics and melody, but someone must have created the harmony/chord progression. Shouldn’t this person be credited as author too?
