The most annoying thing about this video is that you seem to think SRAM and Karoo aren't equally slimy in this. Why the fck is anyone surprised when one of the 2 major players (because campy is irrelevant to the majority of the world) decides to start market brigading and buying up companies, and its primary competitor cuts support of that now competitor owed hardware? SRAM is doing in cycling what Facebook has been doing to social media. Eventually, Shimano will buy up a tech and SRAM will do something similar as the roles reverse because this is capitalism. And honestly, this entire video can be summed up as the west not understanding East Asian business ideology.

You can always tell a Shimano Fanboy comment because they squeal ‘But SRAM’ every time, despite this being Shimano screwing their own Di2 customers.

Great review 👍 I have the older Instinct Solar. It's great, except for the control of the back-light. A solar Casio uses the output of the solar panel to determine whether the back-light is required. My Instinct does not do this, but instead uses sunrise and sunset information; obviously this doesn't work for dark areas during the day or light areas at night. I wrote to Garmin about this, as it seems to me that it could be addressed in software; all the hardware is there to make it work. Garmin didn't reply. Does the Instinct 2 Solar have the option to work the way a Casio works? ..or does Casio have this system covered with a patent?

    • DC Rainmaker
      DC Rainmaker Minute ago

Interesting. I'm not aware of patents there. Though some modern watches now actually use an ambient light sensor to determine light status and change accordingly.

Also can you use both devices while charging with portable battery? And finally if you can charge and use it, does either watches get hot while charging and using the gps? These questions will help me alot to either choose fenix 7x vs epix (gen 2)

Thanks, DC for another great video. One of the viewers noted that they have never seen you that worked up. Well, that's because Shamino is in retaliating mode but as many have commented it's short-sighted. In my opinion, the retaliation is the direct result of first, SRAM's creation of complete "wireless shifting". We all know why I emphasized wireless. Then, SRAM went one step further and released their third tier of electronic shifting with Rival. Seven years back I had the second generation of Di2 so I have experienced it. At the time I was in love with it and shared with all my mechanical friends that they have to try/get Di2. So in the midst of the pandemic, I got lucky and found a bike with Rival eTap. To sum it up, Shimano should come out with their own "105" level electronic shifting and not place negative competitive decisions like not allowing Hammerhead to use their software app. just because SRAM acquired Hammerhead. I too was considering purchasing a Hammerhead unit but now I am discouraged. The cycling community is a family and Shimano could have avoided the bad/negative visibility by not making this decision.

Shimano is a complacent, follower company. This behavior is terrible but not surprising from Shimano. Only 1 of my bikes has Shimano and I can't wait to get rid of it. SRAM has been more innovative and the leader in drivetrains for at least a decade.

  • Andrew White
    Andrew White 9 hours ago

Once I get past some health issues and can return to cycling I want to treat myself to a new high-end bike. This info has definitely influenced what drivetrain it'll have, and it won't be Shimano. My previous bikes, some of which I still own and ride, have Campy and SRAM in addition to Shimano, so I'm not particularly loyal to any one brand, although I have had a bit of an affinity for Campy on my road bikes.

There is a way to load courses with far more than 50 course points and follow them on a Instinct 2 Solar (I loaded entire sections of the PCT, 700-800+ course points, and followed them, no issues) but it is a bit of a kludge. I wish Garmin would officially allow this since it's technically possible, maybe the OG Instinct can't handle it and Garmin doesn't want to make different software builds for each watch? Thanks for making this informative video.

  • Paul K
    Paul K 10 hours ago

I have a garmin 935, It has worked great for 2 years but now the battery only lasts a few hours. They say it's a software problem? I think they have designed these watches to fail so I will buy a new watch or one like these ? My thought is to buy another brand.

  • Slarti Bartfass
    Slarti Bartfass 11 hours ago

The RC with built in screen has quite a lot of huge disadvantages in my opinion: no waypoints, no 3rd party apps (Litchi provides waypoints for example, no settings tuning apps), not usable in FPV Goggle mounts (Litchi again), bad range - 1 km really? With my Mavic Mini 1 (which only has a pimped WiFi connection, no Ocusync) and 3D printed clip-on Yagi antennas I could fly up to 5 km over populated area and more in the mountains, all this with CE mode 2.4 GHz. Not yet testet in FCC Boost mode...

Regarding the maximum number of points, I believe the Fenix 5 also had a similar limitation. I however used it as my only bike navigation and believe there was a little nuance. Economic outlook notwithstanding, this is a smart decision. Just look at the mistake Peloton made in acquiring Precor. It was all downhill from there on because it led them down the path of believing that hardware was their strength. There's no reason for a company like Zwift to run into the hardware business, when they could spend their R&D improving or developing a technical standard that would make it easier for trainer manufacturers to implement so that their products would work better with Zwift. By killing this project, they averted a major disaster and strategic error. They are not Apple.

Hard to see how Shimano gain any benefit from this? In the short term they might cause Hammerhead (and thus SRAM) to make a little less money, as anyone who either has Di2 or is seriously contemplating it is less likely to consider a Hammerhead. However it’s not like they’re going to buy a Shimano GPS unit instead, because there isn’t one - it would be Garmin or Wahoo who benefit. Meanwhile anyone who already has a Hammerhead now has a reason to pick SRAM or Campagnolo rather than Shimano if they decide to upgrade to electronic shifting so this could cost Shimano some future customers.

Would turning on the pulse ox on during sleep increase the accuracy of the sleep data?

    • DC Rainmaker
      DC Rainmaker 12 hours ago

It's not that there's any issue with the actual sleep data per se, it's that sleep phase/stage data isn't super accurate across most companies. PulseOx though won't help here, it's just looking at blood oxygenation levels.

    • Dominic Fernandez

Great video. I always wondered if I can use Garmin Pay without my phone. Is that possible? or do I need my phone? Or mabye I don't need my phone with the fenix 7x because it has wifi. Thanks.

@DC Rainmaker Also, would you recommend the Fenix 7x or should I wait for the forerunner 955? I like this new readiness score. Do you think this would trickle down to the fenix 7x?

No phone at all once you've set it up. That's largely the basis for it - that you could go out on a run, and stop along the way to get important things like M&M's from a convienence store. It does require inital one-time setup on your smartphone, but that's it.
